Decentralised Control of Adaptive Sampling in Wireless Sensor Networks
The efficient allocation of the limited energy resources of a wireless sensor network in a way that maximises the information value of the data collected is a significant research challenge. Within this context, this paper concentrates on adaptive sampling as a means of focusing a sensor’s energy consumption on obtaining the most important data. Specifically, we develop a principled information metric based upon Fisher information and Gaussian process regression that allows the information content of a sensor’s observations to be expressed. We then use this metric to derive three novel decentralised control algorithms for information-based adaptive sampling which represent a trade-off in computational cost and optimality. These algorithms are evaluated in the context of a deployed sensor network in the domain of flood monitoring. The most computationally efficient of the three is shown to increase the value of information gathered by approximately 83%, 27%, and 8% per day compared to benchmarks that sample in a naive non-adaptive manner, in a uniform non-adaptive manner, and using a state-of-the-art adaptive sampling heuristic (USAC) correspondingly. Moreover, our algorithm collects information whose total value is approximately 75% of the optimal solution (which requires an exponential, and thus impractical, amount of time to compute)
Development and performance evaluation of a multistatic radar system
Multistatic radar systems are of emerging interest as they can exploit spatial diversity, enabling improved
performance and new applications. Their development is being fuelled by advances in enabling technologies
in such fields as communications and Digital Signal Processing (DSP). Such systems differ from
typical modern active radar systems through consisting of multiple spatially diverse transmitter and receiver
sites. Due to this spatial diversity, these systems present challenges in managing their operation as
well as in usefully combining the multiple sources of information to give an output to the radar operator.
In this work, a novel digital Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) based coherent multistatic radar
system designed at University College London, named ‘NetRad’, has been developed to produce some
of the first published experimental results, investigating the challenges of operating such a system, and
determining what level of performance might be achievable. Full detail of the various stages involved
in the combination of data from the component transmitter-receiver pairs within a multistatic system is
investigated, and many of the practical issues inherent are discussed.
Simulation and subsequent experimental verification of several centralised and decentralised detection
algorithms in terms of localisation (resolution and parameter estimation) of targets was undertaken.
The computational cost of the DSP involved in multistatic data fusion is also considered. This gave a
clear demonstration of several of the benefits of multistatic radar. Resolution of multiple targets that
would have been unresolvable in a conventional monostatic system was shown. Targets were also shown
to be plotted as two-dimensional vector position and velocities from use of time delay and Doppler shift
information only. A range of targets were used including some such as walking people which were
particularly challenging due to the variability of Radar Cross Section (RCS).
Performance improvements were found to be dependant on the type of multistatic radar, method of
data fusion and target characteristics in question. It is likely that future work will look to further explore
the optimisation of multistatic radar for the various measures of performance identified and discussed in
this work
A Survey on Multisensor Fusion and Consensus Filtering for Sensor Networks
Multisensor fusion and consensus filtering are two fascinating subjects in the research of sensor networks. In this survey, we will cover both classic results and recent advances developed in these two topics. First, we recall some important results in the development ofmultisensor fusion technology. Particularly, we pay great attention to the fusion with unknown correlations, which ubiquitously exist in most of distributed filtering problems. Next, we give a systematic review on several widely used consensus filtering approaches. Furthermore, some latest progress on multisensor fusion and consensus filtering is also presented. Finally,

A Low-Cost Robust Distributed Linearly Constrained Beamformer for Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks with Arbitrary Topology
We propose a new robust distributed linearly constrained beamformer which
utilizes a set of linear equality constraints to reduce the cross power
spectral density matrix to a block-diagonal form. The proposed beamformer has a
convenient objective function for use in arbitrary distributed network
topologies while having identical performance to a centralized implementation.
Moreover, the new optimization problem is robust to relative acoustic transfer
function (RATF) estimation errors and to target activity detection (TAD)
errors. Two variants of the proposed beamformer are presented and evaluated in
the context of multi-microphone speech enhancement in a wireless acoustic
sensor network, and are compared with other state-of-the-art distributed
beamformers in terms of communication costs and robustness to RATF estimation
errors and TAD errors
Information-theoretic Reasoning in Distributed and Autonomous Systems
The increasing prevalence of distributed and autonomous systems is transforming decision making in industries as diverse as agriculture, environmental monitoring, and healthcare. Despite significant efforts, challenges remain in robustly planning under uncertainty. In this thesis, we present a number of information-theoretic decision rules for improving the analysis and control of complex adaptive systems. We begin with the problem of quantifying the data storage (memory) and transfer (communication) within information processing systems. We develop an information-theoretic framework to study nonlinear interactions within cooperative and adversarial scenarios, solely from observations of each agent's dynamics. This framework is applied to simulations of robotic soccer games, where the measures reveal insights into team performance, including correlations of the information dynamics to the scoreline. We then study the communication between processes with latent nonlinear dynamics that are observed only through a filter. By using methods from differential topology, we show that the information-theoretic measures commonly used to infer communication in observed systems can also be used in certain partially observed systems. For robotic environmental monitoring, the quality of data depends on the placement of sensors. These locations can be improved by either better estimating the quality of future viewpoints or by a team of robots operating concurrently. By robustly handling the uncertainty of sensor model measurements, we are able to present the first end-to-end robotic system for autonomously tracking small dynamic animals, with a performance comparable to human trackers. We then solve the issue of coordinating multi-robot systems through distributed optimisation techniques. These allow us to develop non-myopic robot trajectories for these tasks and, importantly, show that these algorithms provide guarantees for convergence rates to the optimal payoff sequence
Cooperative Vehicle Tracking in Large Environments
Vehicle position tracking and prediction over large areas is of significant importance in many industrial applications, such as mining operations. In a small area, this can be easily achieved by providing vehicles with a constant communication link to a control centre and having the vehicles broadcast their position. The problem changes dramatically when vehicles operate within a large environment of potentially hundreds of square kilometres and in difficult terrain. This thesis presents algorithms for cooperative tracking of vehicles based on a vehicle motion model that incorporates the properties of the working area, and information collected by infrastructure collection points and other mobile agents. The probabilistic motion prediction approach provides long-term estimates of vehicle positions using motion profiles built for the particular environment and considering the vehicle stopping probability. A limited number of data collection points distributed around the field are used to update the position estimates, with negative information also used to improve the estimation. The thesis introduces the concept of observation harvesting, a process in which peer-to-peer communication between vehicles allows egocentric position updates and inter-vehicle measurements to be relayed among vehicles and finally conveyed to the collection points for an improved position estimate. It uses a store-and-synchronise concept to deal with intermittent communication and aims to disseminate data in an opportunistic manner. A nonparametric filtering algorithm for cooperative tracking is proposed to incorporate the information harvested, including the negative, relative, and time delayed observations. An important contribution of this thesis is to enable the optimisation of fleet scheduling when full coverage networks are not available or feasible. The proposed approaches were validated with comprehensive experimental results using data collected from a large-scale mining operation
