    Fault Localization Models in Debugging

    Debugging is considered as a rigorous but important feature of software engineering process. Since more than a decade, the software engineering research community is exploring different techniques for removal of faults from programs but it is quite difficult to overcome all the faults of software programs. Thus, it is still remains as a real challenge for software debugging and maintenance community. In this paper, we briefly introduced software anomalies and faults classification and then explained different fault localization models using theory of diagnosis. Furthermore, we compared and contrasted between value based and dependencies based models in accordance with different real misbehaviours and presented some insight information for the debugging process. Moreover, we discussed the results of both models and manifested the shortcomings as well as advantages of these models in terms of debugging and maintenance.Comment: 58-6

    Efficient hardware debugging using parameterized FPGA reconfiguration

    Functional errors and bugs inadvertently introduced at the RTL stage of the design process are responsible for the largest fraction of silicon IC re-spins. Thus, comprehensive func- tional verification is the key to reduce development costs and to deliver a product in time. The increasing demands for verification led to an increase in FPGA-based tools that perform emulation. These tools can run at much higher operating frequencies and achieve higher coverage than simulation. However, an important pitfall of the FPGA tools is that they suffer from limited internal signal observability, as only a small and preselected set of signals is guided towards (embedded) trace buffers and observed. This paper proposes a dynamically reconfigurable network of multiplexers that significantly enhance the visibility of internal signals. It allows the designer to dynamically change the small set of internal signals to be observed, virtually enlarging the set of observed signals significantly. These multiplexers occupy minimal space, as they are implemented by the FPGAā€™s routing infrastructure

    Real-time human action recognition on an embedded, reconfigurable video processing architecture

Here we propose a real-time embedded vision solution for human motion recognition implemented on a ubiquitous device. There are three main contributions in this paper. Firstly, we have developed a fast human motion recognition system with simple motion features and a linear Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The method has been tested on a large, public human action dataset and achieved competitive performance for the temporal template (eg. ā€œmotion history imageā€) class of approaches. Secondly, we have developed a reconfigurable, FPGA based video processing architecture. One advantage of this architecture is that the system processing performance can be reconfiured for a particular application, with the addition of new or replicated processing cores. Finally, we have successfully implemented a human motion recognition system on this reconfigurable architecture. With a small number of human actions (hand gestures), this stand-alone system is performing reliably, with an 80% average recognition rate using limited training data.     Performance Debugging and Tuning using an Instruction-Set Simulator

    Instruction-set simulators allow programmers a detailed level of insight into, and control over, the execution of a program, including parallel programs and operating systems. In principle, instruction set simulation can model any target computer and gather any statistic. Furthermore, such simulators are usually portable, independent of compiler tools, and deterministic-allowing bugs to be recreated or measurements repeated. Though often viewed as being too slow for use as a general programming tool, in the last several years their performance has improved considerably. We describe SIMICS, an instruction set simulator of SPARC-based multiprocessors developed at SICS, in its rƓle as a general programming tool. We discuss some of the benefits of using a tool such as SIMICS to support various tasks in software engineering, including debugging, testing, analysis, and performance tuning. We present in some detail two test cases, where we've used SimICS to support analysis and performance tuning of two applications, Penny and EQNTOTT. This work resulted in improved parallelism in, and understanding of, Penny, as well as a performance improvement for EQNTOTT of over a magnitude. We also present some early work on analyzing SPARC/Linux, demonstrating the ability of tools like SimICS to analyze operating systems
