    Fast Packet-drop Analysis and Network Self-Recovery

    For large networks, e.g., that include hundreds of thousands to millions of network devices, the event of a packet drop somewhere in the network is fairly frequent. Packet drops can result in data loss. Analyzing and recovering from packet drops is currently a time-consuming process. This disclosure describes techniques that incorporate packet-drop intelligence into network devices, such that debugging and root-cause analysis of packet drops is made thorough, efficient, and real-time. A debugging engine is incorporated into a network device such as a switch and runs as part of the switch operating system. The engine leverages the device hardware to perform various counter collections, trap network flows, collect debugging data, inject debug packets, etc. The techniques enable efficient and economic debugging of network issues such as connectivity problems, control-plane protocol time-outs, memory errors, hardware failures, congestion drops, etc

    Open-TEE - An Open Virtual Trusted Execution Environment

    Hardware-based Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) are widely deployed in mobile devices. Yet their use has been limited primarily to applications developed by the device vendors. Recent standardization of TEE interfaces by GlobalPlatform (GP) promises to partially address this problem by enabling GP-compliant trusted applications to run on TEEs from different vendors. Nevertheless ordinary developers wishing to develop trusted applications face significant challenges. Access to hardware TEE interfaces are difficult to obtain without support from vendors. Tools and software needed to develop and debug trusted applications may be expensive or non-existent. In this paper, we describe Open-TEE, a virtual, hardware-independent TEE implemented in software. Open-TEE conforms to GP specifications. It allows developers to develop and debug trusted applications with the same tools they use for developing software in general. Once a trusted application is fully debugged, it can be compiled for any actual hardware TEE. Through performance measurements and a user study we demonstrate that Open-TEE is efficient and easy to use.     Setting the stage – embodied and spatial dimensions in emerging programming practices.

    In the design of interactive systems, developers sometimes need to engage in various ways of physical performance in order to communicate ideas and to test out properties of the system to be realised. External resources such as sketches, as well as bodily action, often play important parts in such processes, and several methods and tools that explicitly address such aspects of interaction design have recently been developed. This combined with the growing range of pervasive, ubiquitous, and tangible technologies add up to a complex web of physicality within the practice of designing interactive systems. We illustrate this dimension of systems development through three cases which in different ways address the design of systems where embodied performance is important. The first case shows how building a physical sport simulator emphasises a shift in activity between programming and debugging. The second case shows a build-once run-once scenario, where the fine-tuning and control of the run-time activity gets turned into an act of in situ performance by the programmers. The third example illustrates the explorative and experiential nature of programming and debugging systems for specialised and autonomous interaction devices. This multitude in approaches in existing programming settings reveals an expanded perspective of what practices of interaction design consist of, emphasising the interlinking between design, programming, and performance with the system that is being developed
