    Technology and Contemporary Classical Music: Methodologies in Practice-Based Research

    This position paper provides a distillation of the NCRM Innovation Forum, ‘Technology and Contemporary Classical Music: Methodologies in Creative Practice Research’, hosted by Cyborg Soloists in June 2023. It features contributions from a variety of creative practitioner-researchers to debate the current state and future of technologically focused, practice-based research in contemporary classical music. The position paper is purposefully polyphonic and pluralistic. By collating a range of perspectives, experiences and expertise, the paper seeks to provoke and delineate a space for further questioning, inquiry, and response. The paper will be of interest to those working within creative practice research, particularly in relation to music, music technologists and those interested in research methodologies more broadly

    Neuroimaging investigations of cortical specialisation for different types of semantic knowledge

    Embodied theories proposed that semantic knowledge is grounded in motor and perceptual experiences. This leads to two questions: (1) whether the neural underpinnings of perception are also necessary for semantic cognition; (2) how do biases towards different sensorimotor experiences cause brain regions to specialise for particular types of semantic information. This thesis tackles these questions in a series of neuroimaging and behavioural investigations. Regarding question 1, strong embodiment theory holds that semantic representation is reenactment of corresponding experiences, and brain regions for perception are necessary for comprehending modality-specific concepts. However, the weak embodiment view argues that reenactment may not be necessary, and areas near to perceiving regions may be sufficient to support semantic representation. In the particular case of motion concepts, lateral occipital temporal cortex (LOTC) has been long identified as an important area, but the roles of its different subregions are still uncertain. Chapter 3 examined how different parts of LOTC reacted to written descriptions of motion and static events, using multiple analysis methods. A series of anterior to posterior sub-regions were analyzed through univariate, multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), and psychophysical interaction (PPI) analyses. MVPA revealed strongest decoding effects for motion vs. static events in the posterior parts of LOTC, including both visual motion area (V5) and posterior middle temporal gyrus (pMTG). In contrast, only the middle portion of LOTC showed increased activation for motion sentences in univariate analyses. PPI analyses showed increased functional connectivity between posterior LOTC and the multiple demand network for motion events. These findings suggest that posterior LOTC, which overlapped with the motion perception V5 region, is selectively involved in comprehending motion events, while the anterior part of LOTC contributes to general semantic processing. Regarding question 2, the hub-and-spoke theory suggests that anterior temporal lobe (ATL) acts as a hub, using inputs from modality-specific regions to construct multimodal concepts. However, some researchers propose temporal parietal cortex (TPC) as an additional hub, specialised in processing and integrating interaction and contextual information (e.g., for actions and locations). These hypotheses are summarized as the "dual-hub theory" and different aspects of this theory were investigated in in Chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 4 focuses on taxonomic and thematic relations. Taxonomic relations (or categorical relations) occur when two concepts belong to the same category (e.g., ‘dog’ and ‘wolf’ are both canines). In contrast, thematic relations (or associative relations) refer to situations that two concepts co-occur in events or scenes (e.g., ‘dog’ and ‘bone’), focusing on the interaction or association between concepts. Some studies have indicated ATL specialization for taxonomic relations and TPC specialization for thematic relations, but others have reported inconsistent or even converse results. Thus Chapter 4 first conducted an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies contrasting taxonomic and thematic relations. This found that thematic relations reliably engage action and location processing regions (left pMTG and SMG), while taxonomic relations only showed consistent effects in the right occipital lobe. A primed semantic judgement task was then used to test the dual-hub theory’s prediction that taxonomic relations are heavily reliant on colour and shape knowledge, while thematic relations rely on action and location knowledge. This behavioural experiment revealed that action or location priming facilitated thematic relation processing, but colour and shape did not lead to priming effects for taxonomic relations. This indicates that thematic relations rely more on action and location knowledge, which may explain why the preferentially engage TPC, whereas taxonomic relations are not specifically linked to shape and colour features. This may explain why they did not preferentially engage left ATL. Chapter 5 concentrates on event and object concepts. Previous studies suggest ATL specialization for coding similarity of objects’ semantics, and angular gyrus (AG) specialization for sentence and event structure representation. In addition, in neuroimaging studies, event semantics are usually investigated using complex temporally extended stimuli, unlike than the single-concept stimuli used to investigate object semantics. Thus chapter 5 used representational similarity analysis (RSA), univariate analysis, and PPI analysis to explore neural activation patterns for event and object concepts presented as static images. Bilateral AGs encoded semantic similarity for event concepts, with the left AG also coding object similarity. Bilateral ATLs encoded semantic similarity for object concepts but also for events. Left ATL exhibited stronger coding for events than objects. PPI analysis revealed stronger connections between left ATL and right pMTG, and between right AG and bilateral inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) and middle occipital gyrus, for event concepts compared to object concepts. Consistent with the meta-analysis in chapter 4, the results in chapter 5 support the idea of partial specialization in AG for event semantics but do not support ATL specialization for object semantics. In fact, both the meta-analysis and chapter 5 findings suggest greater ATL involvement in coding objects' associations compared to their similarity. To conclude, the thesis provides support for the idea that perceptual brain regions are engaged in conceptual processing, in the case of motion concepts. It also provides evidence for a specialised role for TPC regions in processing thematic relations (pMTG) and event concepts (AG). There was mixed evidence for specialisation within the ATLs and this remains an important target for future research

    The Long Lives of Old Lutes: The Cultural and Material History of the Veneration of Old Musical Instruments

    This study examines the object biographies of musical instruments and the function of age in the cultural and material history of the lute. It follows the central question of why old instruments were valued more greatly than new ones and what measures had to be executed to adapt the objects to the ever-changing musical style. It traces the lute in its several cultural functions from the 17th to the 19th century: as a musical instrument, as a symbol, as a commodity, and as an object that had to be adapted, repaired, and altered by several generations of lute makers. This interdisciplinary approach uses a broad spectrum of sources from treatises, lute manuals, forewords in printed lute music, and depictions of lutes in literature, poetry, and visual arts to construct a narrative of the appreciation of old musical instruments. It investigates the material changes that were necessary to ensure their continued use by a profound study of more than 100 instruments in public and private collections. The different business models and prices in the trade of lutes are compared and connected to the common knowledge about old instruments and their brand characteristics among lute players. This study employs methods from musicology, organology, material culture studies, acoustics, economics, art history, technology, and digital humanities. This multivalent approach enhances the understanding of the general dynamics of commodities as status symbols, object biographies, and functional objects and connects them to the material and cultural history of objects using the lute as a case study.Die Studie untersucht die Objektbiografien von Musikinstrumenten und die Funktion des Alters fĂŒr die kulturelle und materielle Geschichte von Lauteninstrumenten. Sie geht der zentralen Frage nach, warum alte Instrumente höher geschĂ€tzt wurden als neue und welche Maßnahmen ergriffen werden mussten, um die Objekte an den sich stĂ€ndig verĂ€ndernden Musikstil anzupassen. Sie verfolgt die Laute in ihren verschiedenen kulturellen Funktionen vom 17. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert: als Musikinstrument, als Symbol, als Gebrauchsgegenstand und als Objekt, das von mehreren Generationen von Lautenbauern angepasst, repariert und verĂ€ndert werden musste. Der interdisziplinĂ€re Ansatz nutzt ein breites Spektrum von Quellen wie Traktate, LautenhandbĂŒcher, Vorworte in gedruckter Lautenmusik und Darstellungen von Lauten in Literatur, Poesie und bildender Kunst, um die Geschichte der WertschĂ€tzung alter Musikinstrumente nachzuverfolgen.     Understanding the Misunderstood Emotion: A Mixed-Methods Investigation of Variants of Anger

    In cultural accounts and scholarly writings about anger, we see conceptualizations that reflect the existence of two variants: an anger perceived as moral, appropriate, and justified; and an anger considered wrong and unjustified. The present dissertation is focused on finding the boundaries between the two. From a functionalist perspective, it has been proposed that anger in response to harm to others is a justified prosocial reaction. Consistent with this notion, in Studies 1 and 2, I demonstrate that the expressivity norms and social consequences of anger depend on whether it is a response to harm to self or a reaction to harm to others. In the subsequent studies, I take a bottom-up approach to provide an in-depth understanding of the characteristics of the anger variants. Namely, in Study 3, I analyze participants’ narratives about their past experiences of justified and unjustified anger using qualitative thematic analysis, closed-vocabulary, and open-vocabulary text processing methods. In Study 4, I use a prototype approach to differentiate justified and unjustified anger experiences across ten dimensions. I demonstrate that these variants of anger have crucial differences in appraisals, perceptions of the targets, and the intra- and interpersonal consequences of anger. The insights from this research program have implications for constructing theories capable of explaining diverse anger experiences and can inform future interventions to address the maladaptive behaviors associated with anger

    Understanding Agreement and Disagreement in Listeners’ Perceived Emotion in Live Music Performance

    Emotion perception of music is subjective and time dependent. Most computational music emotion recognition (MER) systems overlook time- and listener-dependent factors by averaging emotion judgments across listeners. In this work, we investigate the influence of music, setting (live vs lab vs online), and individual factors on music emotion perception over time. In an initial study, we explore changes in perceived music emotions among audience members during live classical music performances. Fifteen audience members used a mobile application to annotate time-varying emotion judgments based on the valence-arousal model. Inter-rater reliability analyses indicate that consistency in emotion judgments varies significantly across rehearsal segments, with systematic disagreements in certain segments. In a follow-up study, we examine listeners' reasons for their ratings in segments with high and low agreement. We relate these reasons to acoustic features and individual differences. Twenty-one listeners annotated perceived emotions while watching a recorded video of the live performance. They then reflected on their judgments and provided explanations retrospectively. Disagreements were attributed to listeners attending to different musical features or being uncertain about the expressed emotions. Emotion judgments were significantly associated with personality traits, gender, cultural background, and music preference. Thematic analysis of explanations revealed cognitive processes underlying music emotion perception, highlighting attributes less frequently discussed in MER studies, such as instrumentation, arrangement, musical structure, and multimodal factors related to performer expression. Exploratory models incorporating these semantic features and individual factors were developed to predict perceived music emotion over time. Regression analyses confirmed the significance of listener-informed semantic features as independent variables, with individual factors acting as moderators between loudness, pitch range, and arousal. In our final study, we analyzed the effects of individual differences on music emotion perception among 128 participants with diverse backgrounds. Participants annotated perceived emotions for 51 piano performances of different compositions from the Western canon, spanning various era. Linear mixed effects models revealed significant variations in valence and arousal ratings, as well as the frequency of emotion ratings, with regard to several individual factors: music sophistication, music preferences, personality traits, and mood states. Additionally, participants' ratings of arousal, valence, and emotional agreement were significantly associated to the historical time periods of the examined clips. This research highlights the complexity of music emotion perception, revealing it to be a dynamic, individual and context-dependent process. It paves the way for the development of more individually nuanced, time-based models in music psychology, opening up new avenues for personalised music emotion recognition and recommendation, music emotion-driven generation and therapeutic applications

    Comparing the production of a formula with the development of L2 competence

    This pilot study investigates the production of a formula with the development of L2 competence over proficiency levels of a spoken learner corpus. The results show that the formula in beginner production data is likely being recalled holistically from learners’ phonological memory rather than generated online, identifiable by virtue of its fluent production in absence of any other surface structure evidence of the formula’s syntactic properties. As learners’ L2 competence increases, the formula becomes sensitive to modifications which show structural conformity at each proficiency level. The transparency between the formula’s modification and learners’ corresponding L2 surface structure realisations suggest that it is the independent development of L2 competence which integrates the formula into compositional language, and ultimately drives the SLA process forward

    Second-Person Surveillance: Politics of User Implication in Digital Documentaries

    This dissertation analyzes digital documentaries that utilize second-person address and roleplay to make users feel implicated in contemporary refugee crises, mass incarceration in the U.S., and state and corporate surveillances. Digital documentaries are seemingly more interactive and participatory than linear film and video documentary as they are comprised of a variety of auditory, visual, and written media, utilize networked technologies, and turn the documentary audience into a documentary user. I draw on scholarship from documentary, game, new media, and surveillance studies to analyze how second-person address in digital documentaries is configured through user positioning and direct address within the works themselves, in how organizations and creators frame their productions, and in how users and players respond in reviews, discussion forums, and Let’s Plays. I build on Michael Rothberg’s theorization of the implicated subject to explore how these digital documentaries bring the user into complicated relationality with national and international crises. Visually and experientially implying that users bear responsibility to the subjects and subject matter, these works can, on the one hand, replicate modes of liberal empathy for suffering, distant “others” and, on the other, simulate one’s own surveillant modes of observation or behavior to mirror it back to users and open up one’s offline thoughts and actions as a site of critique. This dissertation charts how second-person address shapes and limits the political potentialities of documentary projects and connects them to a lineage of direct address from educational and propaganda films, museum exhibits, and serious games. By centralizing the user’s individual experience, the interventions that second-person digital documentaries can make into social discourse change from public, institution-based education to more privatized forms of sentimental education geared toward personal edification and self-realization. Unless tied to larger initiatives or movements, I argue that digital documentaries reaffirm a neoliberal politics of individual self-regulation and governance instead of public education or collective, social intervention. Chapter one focuses on 360-degree virtual reality (VR) documentaries that utilize the feeling of presence to position users as if among refugees and as witnesses to refugee experiences in camps outside of Europe and various dwellings in European cities. My analysis of Clouds Over Sidra (Gabo Arora and Chris Milk 2015) and The Displaced (Imraan Ismail and Ben C. Solomon 2015) shows how these VR documentaries utilize observational realism to make believable and immersive their representations of already empathetic refugees. The empathetic refugee is often young, vulnerable, depoliticized and dehistoricized and is a well-known trope in other forms of humanitarian media that continues into VR documentaries. Forced to Flee (Zahra Rasool 2017), I am Rohingya (Zahra Rasool 2017), So Leben FlĂŒchtlinge in Berlin (Berliner Morgenpost 2017), and Limbo: A Virtual Experience of Waiting for Asylum (Shehani Fernando 2017) disrupt easy immersions into realistic-looking VR experiences of stereotyped representations and user identifications and, instead, can reflect back the user’s political inaction and surveillant modes of looking. Chapter two analyzes web- and social media messenger-based documentaries that position users as outsiders to U.S. mass incarceration. Users are noir-style co-investigators into the crime of the prison-industrial complex in Fremont County, Colorado in Prison Valley: The Prison Industry (David Dufresne and Philippe Brault 2009) and co-riders on a bus transporting prison inmates’ loved ones for visitations to correctional facilities in Upstate New York in A Temporary Contact (Nirit Peled and Sara Kolster 2017). Both projects construct an experience of carceral constraint for users to reinscribe seeming “outside” places, people, and experiences as within the continuation of the racialized and classed politics of state control through mass incarceration. These projects utilize interfaces that create a tension between replicating an exploitative hierarchy between non-incarcerated users and those subject to mass incarceration while also de-immersing users in these experiences to mirror back the user’s supposed distance from this mode of state regulation. Chapter three investigates a type of digital game I term dataveillance simulation games, which position users as surveillance agents in ambiguously dystopian nation-states and force users to use their own critical thinking and judgment to construct the criminality of state-sanctioned surveillance targets. Project Perfect Citizen (Bad Cop Studios 2016), Orwell: Keeping an Eye on You (Osmotic Studios 2016), and Papers, Please (Lucas Pope 2013) all create a dual empathy: players empathize with bureaucratic surveillance agents while empathizing with surveillance targets whose emails, text messages, documents, and social media profiles reveal them to be “normal” people. I argue that while these games show criminality to be a construct, they also utilize a racialized fear of the loss of one’s individual privacy to make players feel like they too could be surveillance targets. Chapter four examines personalized digital documentaries that turn users and their data into the subject matter. Do Not Track (Brett Gaylor 2015), A Week with Wanda (Joe Derry Hall 2019), Stealing Ur Feelings (Noah Levenson 2019), Alfred Premium (JoĂ«l Ronez, Pierre Corbinais, and Émilie F. Grenier 2019), How They Watch You (Nick Briz 2021), and Fairly Intelligentℱ (A.M. Darke 2021) track, monitor, and confront users with their own online behavior to reflect back a corporate surveillance that collects, analyzes, and exploits user data for profit. These digital documentaries utilize emotional fear- and humor-based appeals to persuade users that these technologies are controlling them, shaping their desires and needs, and dehumanizing them through algorithmic surveillance

    Gratitude in Healthcare an interdisciplinary inquiry

    The expression and reception of gratitude is a significant dimension of interpersonal communication in care-giving relationships. Although there is a growing body of evidence that practising gratitude has health and wellbeing benefits for the giver and receiver, gratitude as a social emotion made in interaction has received comparatively little research attention. To address this gap, this thesis draws on a portfolio of qualitative methods to explore the ways in which gratitude is constituted in care provision in personal, professional, and public discourse. This research is informed by a discursive psychology approach in which gratitude is analysed, not as a morally virtuous character trait, but as a purposeful, performative social action that is mutually co-constructed in interaction.I investigate gratitude through studies that approach it on a meta, meso, macro, and micro level. Key intellectual traditions that underpin research literature on gratitude in healthcare are explored through a metanarrative review. Six underlying metanarratives were identified: social capital; gifts; care ethics; benefits of gratitude; staff wellbeing; and gratitude as an indicator of quality of care. At the meso (institutional) level, a narrative analysis of an archive of letters between patients treated for tuberculosis and hospital almoners positions gratitude as participating in a Maussian gift-exchange ritual in which communal ties are created and consolidated.At the macro (societal) level, a discursive analysis of tweets of gratitude to the National Health Service at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic shows that attitudes to gratitude were dynamic in response to events, with growing unease about deflecting attention from risk reduction for those working in the health and social care sectors. A follow-up analysis of the clap-for-carers movement implicates gratitude in embodied, symbolic, and imagined performances in debates about care justice. At the micro (interpersonal) level, an analysis of gratitude encounters broadcast in the BBC documentary series, Hospital, uses pragmatics and conversation analysis to argue that gratitude is an emotion made in talk, with the uptake of gratitude opportunities influencing the course of conversational sequencing. The findings challenge the oftenmade distinction between task-oriented and relational conversation in healthcare.Moral economics are paradigmatic in the philosophical conceptualisation of gratitude. My research shows that, although balance-sheet reciprocity characterised the institutional culture of the voluntary hospital, it is hardly ever a feature ofinterpersonal gratitude encounters. Instead, gratitude is accomplished as shared moments of humanity through negotiated encounters infused with affect. Gratitude should never be instrumentalised as compensating for unsafe, inadequatelyrenumerated work. Neither should its potential to enhance healthcare encounters be underestimated. Attention to gratitude can participate in culture change by affirming modes of acting, emoting, relating, expressing, and connecting that intersect with care justice.This thesis speaks to gratitude as a culturally salient indicator of what people express as worthy of appreciation. It calls for these expressions to be more closely attended to, not only as useful feedback that can inform change, but also because gratitude is a resource on which we can draw to enhance and enrich healthcare as a communal, collaborative, cooperative endeavour

This topic at the crossroads of different research traditions which deal with natural language as a container of knowledge, and with methods to extract and manage knowledge that is linguistically represented is close to the heart of many researchers at the Institut fĂŒr Informationswissenschaft und Sprachtechnologie of UniversitĂ€t Hildesheim: it has long been one of the institute’s research topics, and it has received even more attention over the last few years
