Science in pre-independent India: a scientometric perspective

    Get PDF
Scientific publications and different types of collaboration pattern in pre-independent India are mapped using scientometrics and social network analysis tools. Publication data of Indian authors published before 1947 are downloaded from the Scopus database of Elsevier Science. The study traces the literature growth patterns, core journals, productive authors, authorship collaboration patterns, productive institutions and their collaboration patterns. The result shows that maximum literature was published in the year 1936. The growth of publications during the mid-1930s was evident as many scientific institutions were established by that time. The subject-wise maximum activity was observed in chemistry followed by agricultural and biological science. Proceedings of the Indian Academy of Sciences was the most preferred journals. Universities played the prominent role in scientific research. Some private institutions with ‘nationalistic’ enthusiasm, for example, Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institute for Cultivation of Science were very productive institutions and also prominent in institutional collaboration. These institutions started in the colonial period continue to be the pillars of modern science in India.

The paper studies the trends in acquisition of e-resources vis-a-vis their print counterparts, identifies the e-resourcesbeing subscribed by Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) libraries at Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Kanpur,Guwahati and Roorkee either individually or through a consortium, and analyzes the usage of these resources during2004-11. The study also compiles a union list of all e-resources accessible at IIT Libraries. Data were collected bypersonal visits, interviews, and using a questionnaire. Web sites and annual reports of the Ministry of Human ResourceDevelopment, IITs and INDEST-AICTE Consortium were also scanned to supplement the above information.COUNTER compliant data as provided by the publishers were used to study the usage. Data analysis revealed that IITlibraries spend a significantly large proportion of their budgets to acquire e-resources. There is a clear shift in thecollection development policies of these libraries where e-resources have become a vital part of their core collections.E-resources in all IITs are being heavily used as the number of downloads have increased from 32,33,818 to 76,17,691articles reflecting a growth of 135% over a period of 8 years

Changing Paradigm of Indo-Japan Relations - Opportunities and Challenges

    Get PDF
Indias growing economic strength in recent years has seen it adapting its foreign policy to increase its global influence and status and to meet the challenges of the 21st century. In the past few years, New Delhi has expanded its strategic vision, most noticeably in Asia, and has broadened the definition of its security interests. As a result, India-Japan relations have undergone a paradigmatic shift which has seen an attempt to build a strategic and global partnership between the two countries. India and Japan share a special relationship as fellow democracies without hegemonic interests and with a similar propensity to seek peaceful resolution of conflicts and greater economic engagement in the Asian continent. This paper puts forward the argument that while there are certainly problems of communication and distance between the two countries, the changing international order including most notably, the rise of China will see the two countries increasingly thrown together on a variety of issues, some of which have been identified in the present work. Current and future economic and population dynamics in both the countries mean that India-Japan relations will continue to improve not just politically but also in economic terms.India, Japan, trade, FDI, ODA

The Impact of Ownership Structure on Firm Performance: Evidence From a Large Emerging Market

    Get PDF
We examine how ownership structure affects the performance of firms using firm level data from a large emerging market, India. We specifically focus on a previously unexplored phenomenon, namely the differential role played by foreign institutional and foreign corporate shareholders. An examination of more than one thousand Indian listed firms suggests that the positive effect on firm performance of foreign ownership is attributable to foreign corporations that have, on average, a larger shareholding and a higher degree of commitment and long-term involvement.Furthermore, we document the positive influence of domestic corporations, which are by far the largest blockholders with significant monitoring potential. We find an interesting dichotomy in their monitoring influence depending on whether they have a group affiliation. We also perform an analysis of group firms, the results of which generally suggest a negative impact on firm performance.corporate governance;corporate ownership;corporate performance

Research Outputs Of The Older Indian Institutes Of Technology (IITs) During Last 50 Years – Analysis With Reference to Web Of Science

The paper attempts to study the publication trend of research articles of the Indian Institutes of Technology – IITs, the elite institutions of India established during 1950-60s (more than 50 years old) and continued to play a leading role in extending quality education and pioneering innovative research in science, engineering and technology almost up to the end of 20th century till new institutions added to this brand. The study intends to measure and analyze the research outputs of the older IITs on the basis of the research articles indexed in Web of Science during last 50 years (1970-2019) with other relevant issues. The result reflects that 5 older IITs together contributed 127481 publications as research output in different types of documents during last 50 years (1970-2019), out of which 116713 were published in the form of articles out of which IIT Kharagpur published maximum number of research articles (IIT Kharagpur published 26688 articles - 22.87%) but while counting the productivity for the blocks of every five years, different IITs achieved highest ranking in different block years. The citation impact, collaboration with national and international institutions, prolific authorship and productive subject areas of research among the institutions found competitive and progressive
