[EN] In recent years, the popularity of Cloud computing has allowed users to access unprecedented compute, network, and storage resources under a pay-per-use model. This popularity led to new services to solve specific large-scale computing challenges and simplify the development and deployment of applications. Among the most prominent services in recent years are FaaS (Function as a Service) platforms, whose primary appeal is the ease of deploying small pieces of code in certain programming languages to perform specific tasks on an event-driven basis. These functions are executed on the Cloud provider's servers without users worrying about their maintenance or elasticity management, always keeping a fine-grained pay-per-use model. FaaS platforms belong to the computing paradigm known as Serverless, which aims to abstract the management of servers from the users, allowing them to focus their efforts solely on the development of applications. The problem with FaaS is that it focuses on microservices and tends to have limitations regarding the execution time and the computing capabilities (e.g. lack of support for acceleration hardware such as GPUs). However, it has been demonstrated that the self-provisioning capability and high degree of parallelism of these services can be well suited to broader applications. In addition, their inherent event-driven triggering makes functions perfectly suitable to be defined as steps in file processing workflows (e.g. scientific computing workflows). Furthermore, the rise of smart and embedded devices (IoT), innovations in communication networks and the need to reduce latency in challenging use cases have led to the concept of Edge computing. Edge computing consists of conducting the processing on devices close to the data sources to improve response times. The coupling of this paradigm together with Cloud computing, involving architectures with devices at different levels depending on their proximity to the source and their compute capability, has been coined as Cloud Computing Continuum (or Computing Continuum). Therefore, this PhD thesis aims to apply different Serverless strategies to enable the deployment of generalist applications, packaged in software containers, across the different tiers of the Cloud Computing Continuum. To this end, multiple tools have been developed in order to: i) adapt FaaS services from public Cloud providers; ii) integrate different software components to define a Serverless platform on on-premises and Edge infrastructures; iii) leverage acceleration devices on Serverless platforms; and iv) facilitate the deployment of applications and workflows through user interfaces. Additionally, several use cases have been created and adapted to assess the developments achieved.Risco Gallardo, S. (2023). We present methods and algorithms that allow the Vlasiator code to run global, three-dimensional hybrid-Vlasov simulations of Earth's entire magnetosphere. The key ingredients that make Vlasov simulations at magnetospheric scales possible are the sparse velocity space implementation and spatial adaptive mesh refinement. We outline the algorithmic improvement of the semi-Lagrangian solver for six-dimensional phase space quantities, discuss the coupling of Vlasov and Maxwell equations' solvers in a refined mesh, and provide performance figures from simulation test runs that demonstrate the scalability of this simulation system to full magnetospheric runs.Peer reviewe

The creation of more sustainable energy generation and management systems remains a priority at both European and international levels, as shown by projects such as Horizon Europe, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or the initiatives of the International Energy Agency (IEA). While renewable energies hold a key role in this energy transition, other complementary techniques are also being developed to compensate for some of their disadvantages, such as intermitent supply or the decoupling of energy generation and consumption. Thus, energy storage becomes indispensable, including Thermal Energy Storage (TES). Thermal energy storage by means of Phase Change Materials (PCM) is particularly receiving a great deal of atention from the scientific community due to its great potential and versatility. The present Thesis covers the main experimental methodologies employed in the study and creation of PCMs, including experimental results to support their validity. Quantifying the impact of climate and vegetation changes on runoff based on the budyko framework in the Lake Issyk-Kul Basin, Kyrgyzstan

    Get PDF
Identifying and quantifying the drivers of runoff (R) variability is fundamental to our understanding of the hydrologic cycle and necessary for decision makers to manage water resources. Climate variables and vegetation are the main factors influencing the R. However, the effects of climate and vegetation changes on R are still poorly understood, especially in arid regions with limited water resources. This study quantifies the contribution of precipitation (PRE), potential evapotranspiration (ET0), and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to R in Lake Issyk-Kul Basin (LIKB) dryland Central Asia by using the Budyko model. The results showed that R, PRE, and ET0 decreased from 2000 to 2020, while the NDVI and underlying parameter (ω) showed a slightly increasing trend. By using the Mann-Kendall (M-K) statistical approach, divided the R series into a baseline period (2000–2010) and a change period (2011–2020) based on the breakthrough point (2011). In the baseline period, R showed a decreasing trend, while in the change period, R showed an increasing trend of 1.8 mm/yr. The sensitivity analysis shows that a 1 mm increase in PRE results in a 0.48 mm increase in R (sensitivity coefficient to R is 0.48). Conversely, a 1 mm increase in ET0 (sensitivity coefficient to R of −0.03) and a 1 unit increase in NDVI (sensitivity coefficient to R of −343.31) lead to R decreasing by 0.03 and 343.31 mm, respectively. The relative contributions of PRE, ET0 and NDVI were 33.98%, −3.17% and 3.67%, respectively, suggesting that changes in PRE and NDVI contributed to the decrease in R while the opposite for ET0. PRE dominated the decrease in R, which decreased by 26.58 mm, leading to a decrease in R of 12.76 mm. A decrease of 65.33 mm in ET0 and an increase of 0.003 in NDVI resulted in an increase and decrease of 1.96 and 1.18 mm in R, respectively. This study enhances the understanding of the response of the water cycle to climate and vegetation changes in arid regions and can provide theoretical support for water resource management and ecological restoration
