    A distributed networked approach for fault detection of large-scale systems

    Networked systems present some key new challenges in the development of fault diagnosis architectures. This paper proposes a novel distributed networked fault detection methodology for large-scale interconnected systems. The proposed formulation incorporates a synchronization methodology with a filtering approach in order to reduce the effect of measurement noise and time delays on the fault detection performance. The proposed approach allows the monitoring of multi-rate systems, where asynchronous and delayed measurements are available. This is achieved through the development of a virtual sensor scheme with a model-based re-synchronization algorithm and a delay compensation strategy for distributed fault diagnostic units. The monitoring architecture exploits an adaptive approximator with learning capabilities for handling uncertainties in the interconnection dynamics. A consensus-based estimator with timevarying weights is introduced, for improving fault detectability in the case of variables shared among more than one subsystem. Furthermore, time-varying threshold functions are designed to prevent false-positive alarms. Analytical fault detectability sufficient conditions are derived and extensive simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the distributed fault detection technique

    The evaluation of failure detection and isolation algorithms for restructurable control

    Three failure detection and identification techniques were compared to determine their usefulness in detecting and isolating failures in an aircraft flight control system; excluding sensor and flight control computer failures. The algorithms considered were the detection filter, the Generalized Likelihood Ratio test and the Orthogonal Series Generalized Likelihood Ratio test. A modification to the basic detection filter is also considered which uses secondary filtering of the residuals to produce unidirectional failure signals. The algorithms were evaluated by testing their ability to detect and isolate control surface failures in a nonlinear simulation of a C-130 aircraft. It was found that failures of some aircraft controls are difficult to distinguish because they have a similar effect on the dynamics of the vehicle. Quantitative measures for evaluating the distinguishability of failures are considered. A system monitoring strategy for implementing the failure detection and identification techniques was considered. This strategy identified the mix of direct measurement of failures versus the computation of failure necessary for implementation of the technology in an aircraft system

    On-line dynamic monitoring of the SHARON process for sustainable nitrogen removal from wastewater

    The goal of this work is the development of a suitable monitoring module, which is to be the first module of an integrated fault detection and control system for the SHARON process. To model the process properly, different PCA models lire tested. As a first step, PCA is used in an iterative manner to exclude data not considered to represent normal operational conditions and process behaviour from the original data set. To improve the performance of the identified model, it is decided to account for dynamics in the SHARON process by means of auto-regressive exogenous (ARX) Structuring of data before the identification. A fruitful replacement of missing values for this purpose is done by means of a static PCA model. It is shown that the different criteria used in model selection lead to the same DPCA model. In this paper all steps of the monitoring module design are explained and the performance of different models is analyzed

    Integrated Immunity-based Methodology for UAV Monitoring and Control

    A general integrated and comprehensive health management framework based on the artificial immune system (AIS) paradigm is formulated and an automated system is developed and tested through simulation for the detection, identification, evaluation, and accommodation (DIEA) of abnormal conditions (ACs) on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The proposed methodology involves the establishment of a body of data to represent the function of the vehicle under nominal conditions, called the self, and differentiating this operation from that of the vehicle under an abnormal condition, referred to as the non-self. Data collected from simulations of the selected UAV autonomously flying a set of prescribed trajectories were used to develop and test novel schemes that are capable of addressing the AC-DIEA of sensor and actuator faults on a UAV. While the specific dynamic system used here is a UAV, the proposed framework and methodology is general enough to be adapted and applied to any complex dynamic system. The ACs considered within this effort included aerodynamic control surface locks and damage and angular rate sensor biases. The general framework for the comprehensive health management system comprises a novel complete integration of the AC-DIEA process with focus on the transition between the four different phases. The hierarchical multiself (HMS) strategy is used in conjunction with several biomimetic mechanisms to address the various steps in each phase. The partition of the universe approach is used as the basis of the AIS generation and the binary detection phase. The HMS approach is augmented by a mechanism inspired by the antigen presenting cells of the adaptive immune system for performing AC identification. The evaluation and accommodation phases are the most challenging phases of the AC-DIEA process due to the complexity and diversity of the ACs and the multidimensionality of the AIS. Therefore, the evaluation phase is divided into three separate steps: the qualitative evaluation, direct quantitative evaluation, and the indirect quantitative evaluation, where the type, severity, and effects of the AC are determined, respectively. The integration of the accommodation phase is based on a modular process, namely the strategic decision making, tactical decision marking, and execution modules. These modules are designed by the testing of several approaches for integrating the accommodation phase, which are specialized based on the type of AC being addressed. These approaches include redefining of the mission, adjustment or shifting of the control laws, or adjusting the sensor outputs. Adjustments of the mission include redefining of the trajectory to remove maneuvers which are no longer possible, while adjusting of the control laws includes modifying gains involved in determination of commanded control surface deflections. Analysis of the transition between phases includes a discussion of results for integrated example cases where the proposed AC-DIEA process is applied. The cases considered show the validity of the integrated AC-DIEA system and specific accommodation approaches by an improvement in flight performance through metrics that capture trajectory tracking errors and control activity differences between nominal, abnormal, and accommodated cases

    Wind Turbine Active Fault Tolerant Control Based on Backstepping Active Disturbance Rejection Control and a Neurofuzzy Detector

Offshore wind farms are seen as the future of wind energy, but they can be very expensive to maintain if faults occur. To achieve a reliable and consistent performance, modern wind turbines require advanced fault detection and diagnosis methods. The current research introduces a proposed active fault-tolerant control (AFTC) system that uses backstepping active disturbance rejection theory (BADRC) and an adaptive neurofuzzy system (ANFIS) detector in combination with principal component analysis (PCA) to compensate for system disturbances and maintain performance even when a generator actuator fault occurs. The simulation outcomes demonstrate that the suggested method successfully addresses the actuator generator torque failure problem by isolating the faulty actuator, providing a reliable and robust solution to prevent further damage. The neurofuzzy detector demonstrates outstanding performance in detecting false data in torque, achieving a precision of 90.20% for real data and 100%, for false data. With a recall of 100%, no false negatives were observed. The overall accuracy of 95.10% highlights the detector’s ability to reliably classify data as true or false. These findings underscore the robustness of the detector in detecting false data, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the application presented. Overall, the study concludes that BADRC and ANFIS detection and isolation can improve the reliability of offshore wind farms and address the issue of actuator generator torque failure.Peer reviewe
