Adaptive clustering procedure for continuous gravitational wave searches
In hierarchical searches for continuous gravitational waves, clustering of
candidates is an important postprocessing step because it reduces the number of
noise candidates that are followed-up at successive stages [1][7][12]. Previous
clustering procedures bundled together nearby candidates ascribing them to the
same root cause (be it a signal or a disturbance), based on a predefined
cluster volume. In this paper, we present a procedure that adapts the cluster
volume to the data itself and checks for consistency of such volume with what
is expected from a signal. This significantly improves the noise rejection
capabilities at fixed detection threshold, and at fixed computing resources for
the follow-up stages, this results in an overall more sensitive search. This
new procedure was employed in the first Einstein@Home search on data from the

A population density grid for Spain

to dasymetric population mapping (at census tract level). Eventually, this vector layer
is transformed into a grid format. The work parallels the effort of the Joint Research
Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, in collaboration with Eurostat and the
European Environment Agency (EEA), in building a population density grid for the
whole of Europe, combining CORINE Land Cover with population data per commune.
We solve many of the problems due to the low resolution of CORINE Land Cover,
which are especially visible with Spanish data. An accuracy assessment is carried out
from a simple aggregation of georeferenced point population data for the region of
Madrid. The bottom-up grid constructed in this way is compared to our top-down grid.
We show a great improvement over what has been reported from commune data and
CORINE Land Cover, but the improvements seem to come entirely from the higher
resolution data sets and not from the statistical modeling in the downscaling exercise.
This highlights the importance of providing the research community with more detailed
land cover data sets, as well as more detailed population data. The dasymetric grid is

Effects of Varying Load Intensity on Skeletal Muscle Damage Between Two Isovolumic Resistance Exercise Bouts
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(4): 1212-1221, 2022. There are limited data comparing the efficacy of resistance loads within the hypertrophy range for promoting muscular growth, particularly when similar training volumes are utilized. The purpose of this study was to determine if two similar volume-loads, utilizing different intensities, would produce dissimilar muscular damage and inflammation. Eleven resistance-trained, college-aged males participated in this study. After testing 1RM barbell squats, participants completed two similar volume-load barbell squat sessions at two different resistance loads (67% and 85% of 1RM) on two separate visits. Venous blood samples were collected at baseline and one hour after completion of each exercise session. Plasma was isolated and analyzed for myoglobin and C-reactive protein (CRP) expression via ELISA. Plasma myoglobin expression was significantly elevated above baseline (BASE) values only after the 85% of 1RM (HHL) session (p =0.031), though the 67% (LHL) trial (p = 0.054; h2 = 0.647) was approaching significance (BASE: 1.42+.12 ng/mL; LHL: 4.65+1.13 ng/mL; HHL: 5.00+1.01 ng/mL). No changes in plasma CRP were observed. Despite attempts to equate volumes between resistances, mean total volume-load was significantly higher during the 67% of 1RM trial than during the 85% trial. Resistance loads at 85% of 1RM inflict significantly increased muscle damage over baseline values, even when significantly less total volume was lifted during the 85% trial. Individuals looking to maximize strength and hypertrophy during general training or during rehabilitation may benefit from these findings when determining the appropriate training load
Partial Correctness of a Power Algorithm
This work continues a formal verification of algorithms written in terms of simple-named complex-valued nominative data [6],[8],[15],[11],[12],[13]. In this paper we present a formalization in the Mizar system [3],[1] of the partial correctness of the algorithm: i := val.1 j := val.2 b := val.3 n := val.4 s := val.5 while (i n) i := i + j s := s * b return s computing the natural n power of given complex number b, where variables i, b, n, s are located as values of a V-valued Function, loc, as: loc/.1 = i, loc/.3 = b, loc/.4 = n and loc/.5 = s, and the constant 1 is located in the location loc/.2 = j (set V represents simple names of considered nominative data [17]).The validity of the algorithm is presented in terms of semantic Floyd-Hoare triples over such data [9]. Film as Support for Promoting Reflection and Learning in Caring Science
Caring science that has a foundation in ‘lived experience’ may be viewed as a ‘patient science’, in other words nursing has its starting point in the patient’s perspective. To support in learning caring science, the learning situation has to embrace the students’ lived experience in relation to the substance of caring science. One of the challenges in education involves making theoretical meanings vivid in the absence of actual patients. Written patient narratives and fiction like novels in combination with scientific literature are often used in order to obtain lived experiences as the foundation for teaching. Questions concerning how film can be used in this context to support the learning of caring science have recently emerged. The aim of this study is to describe how film as learning-support may boost reflection when learning caring science. The data was collected through audio-taped seminars, written reflections and group-interviews with students on basic, advanced, and doctoral levels. The analysis is based on the Reflective Lifeworld Research (RLR) approach which is founded in phenomenology. The results show how film as a learning-support enhances the understanding of the caring science theory, and provides a deeper understanding of the subject. Film can be very touching and provides support for the students’ embodied reflections. Hence, it is important that the students are encouraged to watch films from a caring science perspective. This requires a structure for learning-support related to the film, such as having a focus and purpose for watching the film, as well as support for follow-ups. The film itself does not create such support and guidance; instead, it must be combined with well-considered pedagogic thoughts on what learning is and how learning can be supported. The results are highlighted with the help of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of ‘the lived body’, and ‘the flesh of the world’.Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology, Volume 12, Special Edition July 201
Regulation of South China Sea throughflow by pressure difference

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans 121 (2016): 4077–4096, doi:10.1002/2015JC011177.Sea Surface Height (SSH) data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts-Ocean Reanalysis System 4 (ECMWF-ORAS4) are used to determine the pressure difference in connection with variability of the South China Sea ThroughFlow (SCSTF) from 1958 to 2007. Two branches of SCSTF, the Karimata-Sunda Strait ThroughFlow (KSSTF) and the Mindoro Strait ThroughFlow (MSTF), are examined. Using the ensemble empirical mode decomposition method (EEMD), time series of pressure difference and volume transport are decomposed into intrinsic mode functions and trend functions, with the corresponding variability on different time scales. Pressure difference agrees with the KSSTF volume transport on decadal time scale; while for the MSTF, pressure difference varies similarly with volume transport on interannual time scale. Separating the dynamic height difference into the thermal and haline terms, for the KSSTF more than half of the dynamic height difference (32 cm) is due to the thermal contributions; while the remaining dynamic height difference (23 cm) is due to the haline contributions. For the MSTF, the dynamic height difference (29 cm) is primarily due to the thermal contribution (26 cm).This work was

Shaping the Future of Information Literacy Research by Health Sciences Librarians: A Bibliometric Study
Objectives: Information literacy (IL) publications have been examined in many disciplines, but there is limited published literature to assess health sciences librarians’ productivity on IL research. This study aimed to examine the status and characteristics of IL research authored by health sciences librarians over the period of 2008 to 2018.
Methods: Bibliometrics, the statistical analysis of publications, was used to assess the indicators of productivity, collaboration, and visibility on IL research by health sciences librarians. Data was collected from Scopus and Web of Science. EndNote software was used to remove duplicates and Rayyan was used to systematically screen search results for inclusion. Quantitative analysis was performed, examining the number of publications per year, the most prolific authors and their affiliations, most prolific journals, the origin of the first author’s country, etc.
Results: Of the 3,387 search results, 479 (14.8%) unique articles met the inclusion criteria of being authored by health sciences librarians. Study results showed that the number of included publications increased 12% each year on average with the peak in 2016 (n=62). Health Information and Libraries Journal was the most prolific journal that published IL studies in the domain of health sciences librarianship. However, the most highly cited article was published in the Journal of the Medical Library Association. In terms of visibility, 373 (78%) articles have been cited at least once. Authors were highly collaborative with a collaboration index of 2.8.
Conclusions: Over the ten-year period, the volume of IL literature authored by health sciences librarians has increased. Health sciences librarian researchers tend to publish in health sciences library journals. This study shapes the future for health sciences librarians on IL publication practices. Further research might be needed to examine differences in IL publication characteristics after the implementation of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy
