    On the role of Prognostics and Health Management in advanced maintenance systems

    The advanced use of the Information and Communication Technologies is evolving the way that systems are managed and maintained. A great number of techniques and methods have emerged in the light of these advances allowing to have an accurate and knowledge about the systems’ condition evolution and remaining useful life. The advances are recognized as outcomes of an innovative discipline, nowadays discussed under the term of Prognostics and Health Management (PHM). In order to analyze how maintenance will change by using PHM, a conceptual model is proposed built upon three views. The model highlights: (i) how PHM may impact the definition of maintenance policies; (ii) how PHM fits within the Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and (iii) how PHM can be integrated into Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) programs.     A framework for effective management of condition based maintenance programs in the context of industrial development of E-Maintenance strategies

    CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) solutions are increasingly present in industrial systems due to two main circumstances: rapid evolution, without precedents, in the capture and analysis of data and significant cost reduction of supporting technologies. CBM programs in industrial systems can become extremely complex, especially when considering the effective introduction of new capabilities provided by PHM (Prognostics and Health Management) and E-maintenance disciplines. In this scenario, any CBM solution involves the management of numerous technical aspects, that the maintenance manager needs to understand, in order to be implemented properly and effectively, according to the company’s strategy. This paper provides a comprehensive representation of the key components of a generic CBM solution, this is presented using a framework or supporting structure for an effective management of the CBM programs. The concept “symptom of failure”, its corresponding analysis techniques (introduced by ISO 13379-1 and linked with RCM/FMEA analysis), and other international standard for CBM open-software application development (for instance, ISO 13374 and OSA-CBM), are used in the paper for the development of the framework. An original template has been developed, adopting the formal structure of RCM analysis templates, to integrate the information of the PHM techniques used to capture the failure mode behaviour and to manage maintenance.     Making Linked Open Data Writable with Provenance Semirings

    Linked Open Data cloud (LOD) is essentially read-only, re- straining the possibility of collaborative knowledge construction. To sup- port collaboration, we need to make the LOD writable. In this paper, we propose a vision for a writable linked data where each LOD participant can define updatable materialized views from data hosted by other par- ticipants. Consequently, building a writable LOD can be reduced to the problem of SPARQL self-maintenance of Select-Union recursive mate- rialized views. We propose TM-Graph, an RDF-Graph annotated with elements of a specialized provenance semiring to maintain consistency of these views and we analyze complexity in space and traffic

    Designing Traceability into Big Data Systems

    Providing an appropriate level of accessibility and traceability to data or process elements (so-called Items) in large volumes of data, often Cloud-resident, is an essential requirement in the Big Data era. Enterprise-wide data systems need to be designed from the outset to support usage of such Items across the spectrum of business use rather than from any specific application view. The design philosophy advocated in this paper is to drive the design process using a so-called description-driven approach which enriches models with meta-data and description and focuses the design process on Item re-use, thereby promoting traceability. Details are given of the description-driven design of big data systems at CERN, in health informatics and in business process management.     Data warehouse stream view update with multiple streaming.

    The main objective of data warehousing is to store information representing an integration of base data from single or multiple data sources over an extended period of time. To provide fast access to the data, regardless of the availability of the data source, data warehouses often use materialized views. Materialized views are able to provide aggregation on some attributes to help Decision Support Systems. Updating materialized views in response to modifications in the base data is called materialized view maintenance. In some applications, for example, the stock market and banking systems, the source data is updated so frequently that we can consider them as a continuous stream of data. To keep the materialized view updated with respect to changes in the base tables in a traditional way will cause query response times to increase. This thesis proposes a new view maintenance algorithm for multiple streaming which improves semi-join methods and hash filter methods. Our proposed algorithm is able to update a view which joins two base tables where both of the base tables are in the form of data streams (always changing). By using a timestamp, building updategrams in parallel and by optimizing the joining cost between two data sources it can reduce the query response time or execution time significantly.Dept. of Computer Science.     A data warehouse usually contains large amounts of information representing an integration of base data from one or more external data sources over a long period of time to provide fast-query response time. It stores materialized views which provide aggregation (SUM, MIX, MIN, COUNT and AVG) on some measure attributes of interest for data warehouse users. The process of updating materialized views in response to the modification of the base data is called materialized view maintenance. Some data warehouse application domains, like stock markets, credit cards, automated banking and web log domains depend on data sources updated as continuous streams of data. In particular, electronic stock trading markets such as the NASDAQ, generate large volumes of data, in bursts that are up to 4,200 messages per second. This thesis proposes a new view maintenance algorithm (StreamVup), which improves on semi join methods by using hash filters. The new algorithm first, reduce the amount of bytes transported through the network for streams tuples, and secondly reduces the cost of join operations during view update by eliminating the recompution of view updates caused by newly arriving duplicate tuples.     A philosophy of health: life as reality, health as a universal value

    Emphases on biomarkers (e.g. when making diagnoses) and pharmaceutical/drug methods (e.g. when researching/disseminating population level interventions) in primary care evidence philosophies of health (and healthcare) that reduce health to the biological level. However, with chronic diseases being responsible for the majority of all cause deaths and being strongly linked to health behavior and lifestyle; predominantly biological views are becoming increasingly insufficient when discussing this health crisis. A philosophy that integrates biological, behavioral, and social determinants of health could benefit multidisciplinary discussions of healthy publics. This manuscript introduces a Philosophy of Health by presenting its first five principles of health. The philosophy creates parallels among biological immunity, health behavior change, social change by proposing that two general functions—precision and variation—impact population health at biological, behavioral, and social levels. This higher-level of abstraction is used to conclude that integrating functions, rather than separated (biological) structures drive healthy publics.     Design guidelines for remotely maintainable equipment

    The quantity and complexity of on-orbit assets will increase significantly over the next decade. Maintaining and servicing these costly assets represent a difficult challenge. Three general methods are proposed to maintain equipment while it is still in orbit: an extravehicular activity (EVA) crew can perform the task in an unpressurized maintenance area outside any space vehicle; an intravehicular activity (IVA) crew can perform the maintenance in a shirt sleeve environment, perhaps at a special maintenance work station in a space vehicle; or a telerobotic manipulator can perform the maintenance in an unpressurized maintenance area at a distance from the crew (who may be EVA, IVA, or on the ground). However, crew EVA may not always be possible; the crew may have other demands on their time that take precedence. In addition, the orbit of the tasks themselves may be impossible for crew entry. Also crew IVA may not always be possible as option for equipment maintenance. For example, the equipment may be too large to fit through the vehicle airlock. Therefore, in some circumstances, the third option, telerobotic manipulation, may be the only feasible option. Telerobotic manipulation has, therefore, an important role for on-orbit maintenance. It is not only used for the reasons outlined above, but also used in some cases as backup to the EVA crew in an orbit that they can reach
