    Implementation of a DVB-T2 passive coherent locator demonstrator

    Passive Coherent Locator (PCL) radar’s have seen extensive research in the past decade. PCL radars utilize illuminators of opportunity (IOO) as transmitters to perform target detection. Particular interests in FM (analogue) and DVB-T/T2, DAB (digital) radio frequency signals has seen significant focus as possible illuminators for radar processing. The University of Cape Town (UCT) , in particular, has extensive history on passive radar research including the implementation of a full narrowband FM PCL radar demonstrator. This dissertation details the design and implementation of a DVB-T2 Passive Coherent Locator radar demonstrator isolating a single DVB-T2 channel. This includes the design, construction, testing and evaluation of the full PCL radar system. System planning was implemented detailing the possible IOOs available in the Cape Town area. This was followed by signal propagation simulations to determine the effects the environment would have on the transmitted wave utilising Advanced Refractive Effects Prediction System (AREPS) model. A front-end design was simulated and implemented utilizing commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) hardware including the National Instruments Ettus N210 software defined Radio (SDR) based on the system planning results. A processing chain for DVB-T2 based PCL radar was then investigated to determine the most optimal processing chain structure, with the mismatched filtering technique being proposed as an ideal choice for DVB-T2 PCL radar. The proposed processing chain was implemented and tested on both the Ettus N210 front-end as well as a commercial system. The full radar demonstrator was then tested by observing the air traffic surrounding the Cape Town International airport resulting in successful detections of aircraft in the surveyed environment

    Improved Target Localization in Multi-Waveform Multi-Band Hybrid Multistatic Radar Networks

    This study proposes an algorithm to improve the target localization performance. This is implemented in a multi-waveform multi-band hybrid (passive and active) multistatic radar network scenario, that utilize broadcasting signals for radar sensing, in addition to the radar waveforms. Multi-waveform multi-band radar receivers can exploit the broadcast signals transmitted by non-cooperative transmitters, such as communication or broadcasting systems, for target sensing in addition to radar waveform. Hence, multiple measurements of the targets can be acquired and fused to improve the target detection and parameter estimation. Because of utilizing various waveforms, each transmitter-receiver (Tx-Rx) pair has a different range and velocity estimation accuracy, that is also affected by the bistatic geometry of the bistatic pairs. Taking this into account, this study proposes a target localization algorithm based on bistatic Cramér-Rao Lower Bounds (CRLBs) for multistatic multi-band radar networks. It is shown that modeling the entire network and evaluating the bistatic range CRLB of each bistatic pair in advance, and utilizing this information while estimating the target location significantly improves the localization accuracy. Moreover, the proposed algorithm also includes a target height estimation correction stage to achieve a better 3D localization accuracy

    A scalable real-time processing chain for radar exploiting illuminators of opportunity

    Includes bibliographical references.This thesis details the design of a processing chain and system software for a commensal radar system, that is, a radar that makes use of illuminators of opportunity to provide the transmitted waveform. The stages of data acquisition from receiver back-end, direct path interference and clutter suppression, range/Doppler processing and target detection are described and targeted to general purpose commercial off-the-shelf computing hardware. A detailed low level design of such a processing chain for commensal radar which includes both processing stages and processing stage interactions has, to date, not been presented in the Literature. Furthermore, a novel deployment configuration for a networked multi-site FM broadcast band commensal radar system is presented in which the reference and surveillance channels are record at separate locations

    Cooperative Passive Coherent Location: A Promising 5G Service to Support Road Safety

    5G promises many new vertical service areas beyond simple communication and data transfer. We propose CPCL (cooperative passive coherent location), a distributed MIMO radar service, which can be offered by mobile radio network operators as a service for public user groups. CPCL comes as an inherent part of the radio network and takes advantage of the most important key features proposed for 5G. It extends the well-known idea of passive radar (also known as passive coherent location, PCL) by introducing cooperative principles. These range from cooperative, synchronous radio signaling, and MAC up to radar data fusion on sensor and scenario levels. By using software-defined radio and network paradigms, as well as real-time mobile edge computing facilities intended for 5G, CPCL promises to become a ubiquitous radar service which may be adaptive, reconfigurable, and perhaps cognitive. As CPCL makes double use of radio resources (both in terms of frequency bands and hardware), it can be considered a green technology. Although we introduce the CPCL idea from the viewpoint of vehicle-to-vehicle/infrastructure (V2X) communication, it can definitely also be applied to many other applications in industry, transport, logistics, and for safety and security applications

    Doppler-only target tracking for a multistatic radar exploiting FM band illuminators of opportunity

    Includes bibliographical referencesCommensal Radar (CR), defined as a subclass of Passive Radar (PR), is a receive only radar that exploits non-cooperative illuminators of opportunity for target detection, location and subsequent tracking. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the feasibility of using a Frequency Modulation (FM) Broadcast band CR system as a cost effective solution for Air Traffic Control (ATC). An inherent complication by exploiting FM is the low range resolution due to the low bandwidth of FM radio signals. However, due to typical long integration times associated with CR, the frequency domain resolution is typically very good. As a result, measurements of the target's Doppler shift are highly accurate and could potentially make FM illuminators a viable source for ATC purposes. Accordingly, this thesis aims to obtain a comprehensive understanding of using high resolution Doppler measurements to accurately track the position of a target. This objective have been addressed b by performing a comprehensive mathematical analysis for a Doppler only tracking CR system. The analysis is verified with a tracking simulation, in which the Recursive Gauss Newton Filter (RGNF) is used and lastly, a field experiment was conducted to produce tracking results based on real measurement data. Results demonstrated that Doppler only target tracking from real measurement data is possible, even when the initial target state vector is initialised from real measurement data. A good degree of correlation is achieved between the theoretical, simulated and measured results, hence verifying the theoretical findings of this thesis. Ensuring that the observation matrix is properly conditioned in Doppler only tracking applications is important, as failure to do so results in tracking instability. Factors that influence the conditioning of the observation matrix are; the number of receivers used (assuming the basic observation criteria is met) and the placement of the receivers, keeping in mind the possibility of Doppler correlation in the measurements. The possibility of improving an ill-conditioned observation matrix is also demonstrated. In general, tracking filters, for example the RGNF, typically employ time history information and therefore, a direct comparison to the Cramer Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) is unrealistic and accordingly a new theoretical lower bound, called the Cumulative CRLB was derived that does account for time history measurements. Although the best results for this thesis are achieved by using long integration periods (4 s), the effect of Doppler walk was not compensated for and is an aspect that requires further investigation to potentially further improve on the results obtained in this thesis. As a final conclusion for this thesis; the Doppler only target tracking delivered some encouraging results, however a qualification test in the form of an extensive trial period is next required to motivate Doppler only tracking for ATC purposes

    The focus of this thesis is the processing of signals and design of algorithms that can be used to enable radar functions in communications systems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a popular multicarrier modulation waveform in communication systems. As a wideband signal, OFDM improves resolution and enables spectral efficiency in radar systems, while also improving detection performance thanks to its inherent frequency diversity. This thesis aims to use multicarrier waveforms for radar systems, to enable the simultaneous operation of radar and communication functions on the same device. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first part, studies the adaptation and application of other multicarrier waveforms to radar functions. At the present time many studies have been carried out to jointly use the OFDM signal for communication and radar functions, but other waveforms have shown to be possible candidates for communication applications. Therefore, studies on the evaluation of the application of these same signals to radar functions are necessary. In this thesis, to demonstrate that other multicarrier waveforms can overcome the OFDM waveform in radar/communication (RadCom) systems, we propose the adaptation of the filter bank multicarrier (FBMC), generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) and universal filtering multicarrier (UFMC) waveforms for radar functions. These alternative waveforms were compared performance-wise regarding achievable target parameter estimation performance, amount of residual background noise in the radar image, impact of intersystem interference and flexibility of parameterization. In the second part of the thesis, signal processing techniques are explored to solve some of the limitations of the use of multicarrier waveforms for RadCom systems. Radar systems based on OFDM are promising candidates for future intelligent transport networks. Exploring the dual functionality enabled by OFDM, we presents cooperative methods for high-resolution delay-Doppler and direction-of-arrival estimation. High-resolution parameter estimation is an important requirement for automotive radar systems, especially in multi-target scenarios that require reliable target separation performance. By exploring the cooperation between vehicles, the studies presented in this thesis also enable the distributed tracking of targets. The result is a highly accurate multi-target tracking across the entire cooperative vehicle network, leading to improvements in transport reliability and safety.O foco desta tese é o processamento de sinais e desenvolvimento de algoritmos que podem ser utilizados para a habilitar a função de radar nos sistemas de comunicação. OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) é uma forma de onda com modulação multi-portadora, popular em sistemas de comunicação. Para sistemas de radar, O OFDM melhora a resolução e fornece eficiência espectral, além disso sua diversidade de frequências melhora o desempenho na detecção do radar. Essa tese tem como objetivo utilizar formas de onda multi-portadoras para sistemas de radar, possibilitando a operação simultânea de funções de radar e de comunicação num mesmo dispositivo. A tese esta dividida em duas partes. Na primeira parte da tese são realizados estudos da adaptabilidade de outras formas de onda multi-portadora para funções de radar. Nos dias atuais, muitos estudos sobre o uso do sinal OFDM para funções de comunicação e radar vêm sendo realizados, no entanto, outras formas de onda mostram-se possíveis candidatas a aplicações em sistemas de comunicação, e assim, avaliações para funções de sistema de radar se tornam necessárias. Nesta tese, com a intenção de demonstrar que formas de onda multi-portadoras alternativas podem superar o OFDM nos sistemas de Radar/comunicação (RadCom), propomos a adaptação das seguintes formas de onda: FBMC (Filter Bank Multicarrier); GFDM (Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing); e UFMC (Universal Filtering Multicarrier) para funções de radar. Também produzimos uma análise de desempenho dessas formas de onda sobre o aspecto da estimativa de parâmetros-alvo, ruído de fundo, interferência entre sistemas e parametrização do sistema. Na segunda parte da tese serão explorados técnicas de processamento de sinal de forma a solucionar algumas das limitações do uso de formas de ondas multi-portadora para sistemas RadCom. Os sistemas de radar baseados no OFDM são candidatos promissores para futuras redes de transporte inteligentes, porque combinam funções de estimativa de alvo com funções de rede de comunicação em um único sistema. Explorando a funcionalidade dupla habilitada pelo OFDM, nesta tese, apresentamos métodos cooperativos de alta resolução para estimar o posição, velocidade e direção dos alvos. A estimativa de parâmetros de alta resolução é um requisito importante para sistemas de radar automotivo, especialmente em cenários de múltiplos alvos que exigem melhor desempenho de separação de alvos. Ao explorar a cooperação entre veículos, os estudos apresentados nesta tese também permitem o rastreamento distribuído de alvos.     Passive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is a sensor network comprised of multiple distributed receivers that detects and localizes targets using the emissions from multiple non-cooperative radio frequency transmitters. This dissertation advances the theory of centralized passive MIMO radar (PMR) detection by proposing two novel generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detectors. The first addresses detection in PMR networks without direct-path signals. The second addresses detection in PMR networks with direct-path signals. The probability distributions of both test statistics are investigated using recent results from random matrix theory. Equivalence is established between PMR networks without direct-path signals and passive source localization (PSL) networks. Comparison of both detectors with a centralized GLRT for active MIMO radar (AMR) detection reveals that PMR may be interpreted as the link between AMR and PSL sensor networks. In particular, under high direct-path-to-noise ratio (DNR) conditions, PMR sensitivity and ambiguity approaches that of AMR. Under low-DNR conditions, PMR sensitivity and ambiguity approaches that of PSL. At intermediate DNRs, PMR sensitivity and ambiguity smoothly varies between that of AMR and PSL. In this way, PMR unifies PSL and AMR within a common theoretical framework. This result provides insight into the fundamental natures of active and passive distributed sensing
