This thesis addresses the need for a theological framework that revitalizes the missional nature of Churches of Christ in South Australia. The problem identified within this ministry context was a lack of clear theological principles that informed a common understanding of identity for missional engagement. The purpose of the project was to create a study guide that informs common theological commitments and grounds congregations for missional vitality. A research and development team made up of seven Church of Christ ministers from different backgrounds was assembled to design a curriculum that addressed the problem. Through eight two-hour sessions over four months in the first half of 2022, the team discussed a theological framework that could revitalize mission. This was informed by a Trinitarian theological rationale introduced as perichoresis. The conceptual framework for discussions included (1) the historical and theological foundations of Churches of Christ, (2) a Trinitarian doctrine of God presented as perichoresis, (3) contemporary congregational practices, and (4) a theological proposal for re-imagining mission. The team developed a study guide that promotes a dynamic theological framework for practicing theology and revitalizing the missional nature of the church. The artifact, Movement & Identity: Participating in the Life of GodÔÇÖs Mission, was evaluated by the team and members of Church of Christ congregations in South Australia. The curriculum is designed to assist participants with practical theological interpretation through (1) discovering new ideas about God in the context of Churches of Christ traditions, (2) engaging with contextual theology in community, (3) participating in GodÔÇÖs mission, and (4) reflecting on how GodÔÇÖs agency transforms the church. The development of the study guide will stimulate a practical theological framework that promotes dynamic theological dialogue and missional vitality for Churches of Christ in South Australia

Practitioners working with children have emphasized that play is vital to childrenÔÇÖs development, Links between childrenÔÇÖs social-emotional development and play have been widely documented. However, rigorous research evidence of these links remains limited. This studyÔÇÖs objectives were to measure the impact of play on childrenÔÇÖs social-emotional development in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia; identify teachersÔÇÖ viewpoints around the use of play intervention; and understand the childrenÔÇÖs experience of play intervention. Fifty-nine children aged between five and six years, with mean age of 5.5 (SD 3.376) and eight teachers participated in the study. The study used a mixed-method strategy including questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. ChildrenÔÇÖs social-emotional development was measured by using the Strengths and Difficulties Questioner (SDQ). A pre-/post-test counterbalanced design was used to measure the impact of the play intervention on childrenÔÇÖs development. TeachersÔÇÖ perspectives on play were obtained by interviewing eight teachers. ChildrenÔÇÖs views were gathered through focus group discussions. Repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to determine the differences in the SDQ score over three time points. Results showed that using unstructured loose parts play had positively impacted childrenÔÇÖs social-emotional development. After participation in the play intervention, scores from the SDQ indicated that children demonstrated significantly less problematic emotional, conduct and peer relationship issues. They also scored significantly higher in their positive prosocial behaviour. These positive effects were sustained after six weeks of stopping the intervention. The play intervention did not however impact childrenÔÇÖs hyperactivity level. The interviews analysis illustrates four main themes: concept and characteristics of play, play functions, developmental benefits of play, and play and practice. Regarding childrenÔÇÖs discussion, affordance emerged as a main theme; this includes emotional, social, and functional affordances. Unstructured loose parts play intervention was demonstrated to have positive impacts on childrenÔÇÖs social-emotional development. The studyÔÇÖs findings support the view that play is a way to increase childrenÔÇÖs development

The quest of publicness: how public are public spaces? The particularity of Damascus' old city

Tese de doutoramento em Arquitetura (especialidade Cidade e Territ├│rio)This study presents the assessment of publicness in urban design by addressing how public are public spaces in the old city of Damascus, Syria. In the late twentieth century, the ancient city of Damascus was labeled as world heritage, and its urban fabric was protected by UNESCO. The traditional old city is the subject of many rehabilitations and renovation projects by local public authorities and many international NGOs. Mainly due to the civil conflict ongoing in Syria. Two overlapping frameworks were suggested to approach the publicness in the old city of Damascus. The first one addressed identifying public spaces as part of the urban designs in the old city, using a selection of criteria sited over three dimensions of urban designs theory. The first one is the morphological dimension, concerning the spatial structure of urban spaces, containing three criteria: layout, landscape, and scale. The second one is the social dimension, tackling the convoluted relationships between users and spaces; this dimension┬┤s criteria encompass identity, security, and use. The last dimension is functional, which addresses the day-to-day function of the space┬┤s constituent elements, presented in the selected criteria of access and control. The second framework assesses the level of publicness by applying chosen publicness indicators on targeted public spaces. The indicators are divaricated from three publicness dimensions of ownership, management, and accessibility. The ownership indicators include property and functions. The management dimension indicators include the type of management, presence of control, physical maintenance, and provision of facilities. While the accessibility dimension has three indicators: centrality and connections, visual permeability, and thresholds and gateways. The structure and narrative of DamascusÔÇÖs old city showed a complex system of public spaces formed by a combination of Mediterranean citiesÔÇÖ public spaces and Arab-Islamic cities┬┤ urbanism. Maintaining privacy and security was the main motive behind adopting the current spaces hierarchy in the traditional old city. Out of the diverse range of public spaces in the old city of Damascus, five of them were chosen for the publicness assessment, which includes: The main streets, the Harat, the secondary streets, the Cul-de-sacs, and the house┬┤s courtyards. Each of these spaces┬┤ publicness was assessed by applying the aforementioned publicness indicators, using the analyzed information and graphical data provided for this study. As a result of this assessment, the public spaces of Damascus┬┤s old city vary in the level of publicness; they mirror the gradual transition from public to private through its level of publicness. This corresponds to the exploration journey from the city┬┤s public areas outside the wall into its street network to reach the private areas of the houses. In the end, the assessment of public spaces revealed that each public space has its own particular publicness qualities, which may affect its level of publicness. Some spaces may have the same generic level of publicness, whether it is public, semi-public, semi-private, or private. Still, one of them will be more public than the other. The publicness of any public space will remain distinct from other spaces┬┤ publicness, which reflects the particularity of the old city of Damascus public spaces.

Walking with the Earth: Intercultural Perspectives on Ethics of Ecological Caring

    Get PDF
It is commonly believed that considering nature different from us, human beings (qua rational, cultural, religious and social actors), is detrimental to our engagement for the preservation of nature. An obvious example is animal rights, a deep concern for all living beings, including non-human living creatures, which is understandable only if we approach nature, without fearing it, as something which should remain outside of our true home. ÔÇťWalking with the earthÔÇŁ aims at questioning any similar preconceptions in the wide sense, including allegoric-poetic contributions. We invited 14 authors from 4 continents to express all sorts of ways of saying why caring is so important, why togetherness, being-with each others, as a spiritual but also embodied ethics is important in a divided world

    Heavy Metal in Medieval Europe

How and why did plate armor come to be widely used in Medieval Europe? I trace the historical development of armor in Europe from antiquity to the middle ages, and then identify the main causes that pushed European warriors to develop and adopt plate armor from the 14th to the 16th centuries. I rely on prior research by scholars and historians of arms and armor, as well as primary source documents that describe arms and armor and their use in tournaments and on the battlefield. I conclude that a combination of social, political, military, and technical factors pushed European warriors to adopt plate armor. I also briefly discuss the demise of plate armor due to increasing use of firearms in the 16th century and the growth of professional armies
