    The McMinnville 100 Years Ago project is a collaborative research project that has been initiated by Professor Huntsberger’s History of Mass Communication class. This particular project topic focuses on the daily life of Yamhill County in 1912. As a group we have chosen to divide our project into different subject areas: churches, businesses, schools, recreation, and clothing. In order to learn about the daily life of Yamhill County, we analyzed historical evidence from Yamhill County in 1912, such as newspapers, pictures, and journals. These documents were found with help from the Yamhill County Historical Museum and the McMinnville Public Library. With this evidence, we crafted together a thorough portrayal on the daily life of Yamhill County in 1912

    Teaching students about chemical elements using daily-life contexts

    Learning the names and symbols for chemical elements is a task that students often find dull, although it is of crucial importance for understanding chemistry. In this respect, the use of games or similar play activities could make the learning experience more enjoyable. This paper presents the results of a study in which two tasks involving play (TIPs) and based on daily-life contexts (football and the home) were used to teach the names and symbols of chemical elements. The experimental group comprised 38 year-10 students who studied this topic through a teaching unit built around the TIPs. A control group of 67 year-10 students followed a traditional teaching approach to the same topic. The effectiveness of the TIPs was assessed using three items, administered pre- and post-test, that explored students’ knowledge about metallic and non-metallic elements and their ability to identify them in their everyday environment. Following the TIP-based teaching unit, students in the experimental group gave a higher percentage of appropriate answers, with the Wilcoxon test indicating significant post-test differences for all three items. However, the Kolgomorov-Smirnov test indicated that the experimental and control groups only differed significantly at post-test in their ability to give the names and symbols of non-metals, with the experimental group performing better. Memorising the names and symbols of chemical elements is a complex task for students, and identifying their presence in everyday environments appears to be particularly difficult. However, the results suggest that the use of TIPs linked to daily-life contexts could help students with their learning of this topic.Universidad de Málaga.     Predict Daily Life Stress based on Heart Rate Variability

    Department of Human Factors EngineeringThe purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of predicting a daily mental stress level from analyzing Heart Rate Variability (HRV) by using a Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor which is integrated in the wristband-type wearable device. In this experiment, each participant was asked to measure their own PPG signals for 30 seconds, three times a day (at noon, 6 P.M, and 10 minutes before going to sleep) for a week. And 10 minutes before going to sleep, all participants were asked to self-evaluate their own daily mental stress level using Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The recorded signals were transmitted and stored at each participant???s smartphone via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication by own-made mobile application. The preprocessing procedure was used to remove PPG signal artifacts in order to make better performance for detecting each pulse peak point at PPG signal. In this preprocessing, three- level-bandpass filtering which consisted three different pass band range bandpass filters was used. In this study, frequency domain HRV analysis feature that the ratio of low-frequency (0.04Hz ~ 0.15Hz) to high-frequency (0.15Hz ~ 0.4Hz) power value was used. In frequency domain analysis, autoregressive (AR) model was used, because this model has higher resolution than that of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The accuracy of this prediction was 86.35% on average of all participants. Prediction result was calculated from the leave-one-out validation. The IoT home appliances are arranged according to the result of this prediction algorithm. This arrangement is offering optimized user???s relaxation.     The impact of hyperhidrosis on patients' daily life and quality of life : A qualitative investigation

    Background: An understanding of the daily life impacts of hyperhidrosis and how patients deal with them, based on qualitative research, is lacking. This study investigated the impact of hyperhidrosis on the daily life of patients using a mix of qualitative research methods. Methods: Participants were recruited through hyperhidrosis patient support groups such as the Hyperhidrosis Support Group UK. Data were collected using focus groups, interviews and online surveys. A grounded theory approach was used in the analysis of data transcripts. Data were collected from 71 participants, out of an initial 100 individuals recruited. Results: Seventeen major themes capturing the impacts of hyperhidrosis were identified; these covered all areas of life including daily life, psychological well-being, social life, professional /school life, dealing with hyperhidrosis, unmet health care needs and physical impact. Conclusions: Psychosocial impacts are central to the overall impacts of hyperhidrosis, cutting across and underlying the limitations experienced in other areas of life.Peer reviewe

    Locating sovereignty in the auto-ethnographic-political poetics of daily existence in two amazonian films

    The theme of daily life is a common one in the Brazilian Video in the Villages (Vídeo nas aldeias) filmic archive. I analyze the diversity of cinematic treatments of and approaches to the theme of daily life in an Indigenous village by comparing, contrasting, and examining how two films construct, embody, and experience communal life through culturally specific methods of inquiry. In particular, I explore concepts of time, the senses, creativity, and the relations between the individual and the collectivity as all of the above are cinematically rendered in the intimacy, the performance, and the ritual of daily life. Specifically, I look at how these two VNA productions, Shomõtsi (2001) and Kiarãsã Tõ Sâty, The Agouti’s Peanut (2005), repoliticize the everyday through sovereign practices. I discuss these cinematic works as they relate to imperfect media (Salazar & Cordova, 2008), decolonial pedagogies, and the “cosmological embeddedness of the everyday” (Overing & Passes, 2000, p. 298).peer-reviewe
