09051 Abstracts Collection -- Knowledge representation for intelligent music processing
From the twenty-fifth to the thirtieth of January, 2009, the
Dagstuhl Seminar 09051 on ``Knowledge representation for intelligent music
processing\u27\u27 was held in Schloss Dagstuhl~--~Leibniz Centre for Informatics.
During the seminar, several participants presented their current
research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts
of the presentations and demos given during the seminar as well as
plenary presentations, reports of workshop discussions, results and
ideas are put together in this paper. The first section describes the
seminar topics and goals in general, followed by plenary `stimulus\u27
papers, followed by reports and abstracts arranged by workshop
followed finally by some concluding materials providing views of both
the seminar itself and also forward to the longer-term goals of the
discipline. Links to extended abstracts, full papers and supporting
materials are provided, if available.

The Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop "Online Privacy: Towards Informational Self-Determination on the Internet" (11061) has been held in February 6-11, 2011 at Schloss Dagstuhl. 30 participants from academia, public sector, and industry have identified the current status-of-the-art of and challenges for online privacy as well as derived recommendations for improving online privacy. Whereas the Dagstuhl Manifesto of this workshop concludes the results of the working groups and panel discussions, this article presents the talks of this workshop by their abstracts

Machine Learning for Software Engineering: Models, Methods, and Applications
Machine Learning (ML) is the discipline that studies methods for automatically inferring models from data. Machine learning has been successfully applied in many areas of software engineering ranging from behaviour extraction, to testing, to bug fixing. Many more applications are yet be defined. However, a better understanding of ML methods, their assumptions and guarantees would help software engineers adopt and identify the appropriate methods for their desired applications. We argue that this choice can be guided by the models one seeks to infer. In this technical briefing, we review and reflect on the applications of ML for software engineering organised according to the models they produce and the methods they use. We introduce the principles of ML, give an overview of some key methods, and present examples of areas of software engineering benefiting from ML. We also discuss the open challenges for reaching the full potential of ML for software engineering and how ML can benefit from software engineering methods
Static and Dynamic Aspects of Scientific Collaboration Networks
Collaboration networks arise when we map the connections between scientists
which are formed through joint publications. These networks thus display the
social structure of academia, and also allow conclusions about the structure of
scientific knowledge. Using the computer science publication database DBLP, we
compile relations between authors and publications as graphs and proceed with
examining and quantifying collaborative relations with graph-based methods. We
review standard properties of the network and rank authors and publications by
centrality. Additionally, we detect communities with modularity-based
clustering and compare the resulting clusters to a ground-truth based on
conferences and thus topical similarity. In a second part, we are the first to
combine DBLP network data with data from the Dagstuhl Seminars: We investigate
whether seminars of this kind, as social and academic events designed to
connect researchers, leave a visible track in the structure of the
collaboration network. Our results suggest that such single events are not
influential enough to change the network structure significantly. However, the
network structure seems to influence a participant's decision to accept or

DIY networking as a facilitator for interdisciplinary research on the hybrid city
DIY networking is a technology with special characteristics compared to the public Internet, which holds a unique potential for empowering citizens to shape their hybrid urban space toward conviviality and collective awareness. It can also play the role of a âboundary objectâ for facilitating interdisciplinary interactions and participatory processes between different actors: researchers, engineers, practitioners, artists, designers, local authorities, and activists. This position paper presents a social learning framework, the DIY networking paradigm, that we aim to put in the centre of the hybrid space design process. We first introduce our individual views on the role of design as discussed in the fields of engineering, urban planning, urban interaction design, design research, and community informatics. We then introduce a simple methodology for combining these diverse perspectives into a meaningful interdisciplinary collaboration, through a series of related events with different structure and framing. We conclude with a short summary of a selection of these events, which serves also as an introduction to the CONTACT workshop on facilitating information sharing between strangers, in the context of the Hybrid City III conference
Hybrid XML Retrieval: Combining Information Retrieval and a Native XML Database
This paper investigates the impact of three approaches to XML retrieval:
using Zettair, a full-text information retrieval system; using eXist, a native
XML database; and using a hybrid system that takes full article answers from
Zettair and uses eXist to extract elements from those articles. For the
content-only topics, we undertake a preliminary analysis of the INEX 2003
relevance assessments in order to identify the types of highly relevant
document components. Further analysis identifies two complementary sub-cases of
relevance assessments ("General" and "Specific") and two categories of topics
("Broad" and "Narrow"). We develop a novel retrieval module that for a
content-only topic utilises the information from the resulting answer list of a
native XML database and dynamically determines the preferable units of
retrieval, which we call "Coherent Retrieval Elements". The results of our
experiments show that -- when each of the three systems is evaluated against
different retrieval scenarios (such as different cases of relevance
assessments, different topic categories and different choices of evaluation
metrics) -- the XML retrieval systems exhibit varying behaviour and the best
performance can be reached for different values of the retrieval parameters. In
the case of INEX 2003 relevance assessments for the content-only topics, our
newly developed hybrid XML retrieval system is substantially more effective
than either Zettair or eXist, and yields a robust and a very effective XML

Supporting the Everyday Work of Scientists: Automating Scientific Workflows
This paper describes an action research project that we undertook with National Research Council Canada (NRC) scientists. Based on discussions about their \ud
difficulties in using software to collect data and manage processes, we identified three requirements for increasing research productivity: ease of use for end- \ud
users; managing scientific workflows; and facilitating software interoperability. Based on these requirements, we developed a software framework, Sweet, to \ud
assist in the automation of scientific workflows. \ud

Throughout the iterative development process, and through a series of structured interviews, we evaluated how the framework was used in practice, and identified \ud
increases in productivity and effectiveness and their causes. While the framework provides resources for writing application wrappers, it was easier to code the applicationsâ functionality directly into the framework using OSS components. Ease of use for the end-user and flexible and fully parameterized workflow representations were key elements of the frameworkâs success. \u
