    The Corpus of Basque Simplified Texts (CBST)

    In this paper we present the corpus of Basque simplified texts. This corpus compiles 227 original sentences of science popularisation domain and two simplified versions of each sentence. The simplified versions have been created following different approaches: the structural, by a court translator who considers easy-to-read guidelines and the intuitive, by a teacher based on her experience. The aim of this corpus is to make a comparative analysis of simplified text. To that end, we also present the annotation scheme we have created to annotate the corpus. The annotation scheme is divided into eight macro-operations: delete, merge, split, transformation, insert, reordering, no operation and other. These macro-operations can be classified into different operations. We also relate our work and results to other languages.     Automatic and Human-AI Interactive Text Generation

    In this tutorial, we focus on text-to-text generation, a class of natural language generation (NLG) tasks, that takes a piece of text as input and then generates a revision that is improved according to some specific criteria (e.g., readability or linguistic styles), while largely retaining the original meaning and the length of the text. This includes many useful applications, such as text simplification, paraphrase generation, style transfer, etc. In contrast to text summarization and open-ended text completion (e.g., story), the text-to-text generation tasks we discuss in this tutorial are more constrained in terms of semantic consistency and targeted language styles. This level of control makes these tasks ideal testbeds for studying the ability of models to generate text that is both semantically adequate and stylistically appropriate. Moreover, these tasks are interesting from a technical standpoint, as they require complex combinations of lexical and syntactical transformations, stylistic control, and adherence to factual knowledge, -- all at once. With a special focus on text simplification and revision, this tutorial aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art natural language generation research from four major aspects -- Data, Models, Human-AI Collaboration, and Evaluation -- and to discuss and showcase a few significant and recent advances: (1) the use of non-retrogressive approaches; (2) the shift from fine-tuning to prompting with large language models; (3) the development of new learnable metric and fine-grained human evaluation framework; (4) a growing body of studies and datasets on non-English languages; (5) the rise of HCI+NLP+Accessibility interdisciplinary research to create real-world writing assistant systems.Comment: To appear at ACL 2024, Tutoria

    Data-driven sentence simplification: Survey and benchmark

    Sentence Simplification (SS) aims to modify a sentence in order to make it easier to read and understand. In order to do so, several rewriting transformations can be performed such as replacement, reordering, and splitting. Executing these transformations while keeping sentences grammatical, preserving their main idea, and generating simpler output, is a challenging and still far from solved problem. In this article, we survey research on SS, focusing on approaches that attempt to learn how to simplify using corpora of aligned original-simplified sentence pairs in English, which is the dominant paradigm nowadays. We also include a benchmark of different approaches on common datasets so as to compare them and highlight their strengths and limitations. We expect that this survey will serve as a starting point for researchers interested in the task and help spark new ideas for future developments

    PaCCSS-IT: A Parallel Corpus of Complex-Simple Sentences for Automatic Text Simplification

    In this paper we present PaCCSS-IT, a Parallel Corpus of Complex-Simple Sentences for ITalian. To build the resource we develop a new method for automatically acquiring a corpus of complex-simple paired sentences able to intercept structural transformations and particularly suitable for text simplification. The method requires a wide amount of texts that can be easily extracted from the web making it suitable also for less-resourced languages. We test it on the Italian language making available the biggest Italian corpus for automatic text simplification

    Analyzing Text Complexity and Text Simplification: Connecting Linguistics, Processing and Educational Applications

    Reading plays an important role in the process of learning and knowledge acquisition for both children and adults. However, not all texts are accessible to every prospective reader. Reading difficulties can arise when there is a mismatch between a reader’s language proficiency and the linguistic complexity of the text they read. In such cases, simplifying the text in its linguistic form while retaining all the content could aid reader comprehension. In this thesis, we study text complexity and simplification from a computational linguistic perspective. We propose a new approach to automatically predict the text complexity using a wide range of word level and syntactic features of the text. We show that this approach results in accurate, generalizable models of text readability that work across multiple corpora, genres and reading scales. Moving from documents to sentences, We show that our text complexity features also accurately distinguish different versions of the same sentence in terms of the degree of simplification performed. This is useful in evaluating the quality of simplification performed by a human expert or a machine-generated output and for choosing targets to simplify in a difficult text. We also experimentally show the effect of text complexity on readers’ performance outcomes and cognitive processing through an eye-tracking experiment. Turning from analyzing text complexity and identifying sentential simplifications to generating simplified text, one can view automatic text simplification as a process of translation from English to simple English. In this thesis, we propose a statistical machine translation based approach for text simplification, exploring the role of focused training data and language models in the process. Exploring the linguistic complexity analysis further, we show that our text complexity features can be useful in assessing the language proficiency of English learners. Finally, we analyze German school textbooks in terms of their linguistic complexity, across various grade levels, school types and among different publishers by applying a pre-existing set of text complexity features developed for German

    VIKING, LAVAL AND ALL THAT: CONSEQUENCES OF ECJ RULINGS AND DEVELOPMENTS IN THE AREA OF INDUSTRIAL CONFLICT IN AN ENLARGED EU

    The main aim of the thesis is to provide a recognition of the major consequences and potential impact of the European Court of Justice rulings in the Viking, Laval, R\ufcffert and Luxembourg cases dating to the late 2007-early 2008 and balancing the conflict between economic freedoms and fundamental social rights, as well as the most important judicial and legislative developments in the field of fundamental collective rights, both in various domestic settings and at EU-level. The work proceeds to reconstruct the fundamental elements in the regulation of the right to strike and collective action in Italy, Germany and the UK, as well as the development in international instruments such as ILO Conventions and the ESC, as well as the first European Community and Union approaches occurred in particular in the late '90s and with the issuing of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. The starting point for the analysis of the rulings is represented by the political, economic and legal context and occurrences linked with the latest rounds of the European enlargement process; focusing on the most prominent legal aspects emerging from the Court\u2019s reasonings, an assessment of the actual and potential impact on the national regulations and industrial relation systems is carried out, with particular attention to the Swedish, German and Italian frameworks. Clarification efforts also focus on the main elements of uncertainty stemming from the rulings; furthermore, disputes taking places in some national settings and most clearly linked with the ECJ rulings (in particular Sweden and UK) are analyzed and assessed. The thesis then proceed to evaluate the most important and recent responses elaborated by social partners and EU institutions in order to reconcile the economic and social dimension of the Union, as well as the recent judicial course taken by the ECtHR with reference to the right to collective action (in the Demir and Enerji rulings), and the perspectives deriving from the adoption of the Treaty of Lisbon and the planned accession of the EU to the ECHR in order to readdress the judicial course undertaken by the ECJ in the field
