    Design and implementation of low complexity wake-up receiver for underwater acoustic sensor networks

    This thesis designs a low-complexity dual Pseudorandom Noise (PN) scheme for identity (ID) detection and coarse frame synchronization. The two PN sequences for a node are identical and are separated by a specified length of gap which serves as the ID of different sensor nodes. The dual PN sequences are short in length but are capable of combating severe underwater acoustic (UWA) multipath fading channels that exhibit time varying impulse responses up to 100 taps. The receiver ID detection is implemented on a microcontroller MSP430F5529 by calculating the correlation between the two segments of the PN sequence with the specified separation gap. When the gap length is matched, the correlator outputs a peak which triggers the wake-up enable. The time index of the correlator peak is used as the coarse synchronization of the data frame. The correlator is implemented by an iterative algorithm that uses only one multiplication and two additions for each sample input regardless of the length of the PN sequence, thus achieving low computational complexity. The real-time processing requirement is also met via direct memory access (DMA) and two circular buffers to accelerate data transfer between the peripherals and the memory. The proposed dual PN detection scheme has been successfully tested by simulated fading channels and real-world measured channels. The results show that, in long multipath channels with more than 60 taps, the proposed scheme achieves high detection rate and low false alarm rate using maximal-length sequences as short as 31 bits to 127 bits, therefore it is suitable as a low-power wake-up receiver.     Soft-Decision-Driven Sparse Channel Estimation and Turbo Equalization for MIMO Underwater Acoustic Communications

    Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) detection based on turbo principle has been shown to provide a great enhancement in the throughput and reliability of underwater acoustic (UWA) communication systems. Benefits of the iterative detection in MIMO systems, however, can be obtained only when a high quality channel estimation is ensured. In this paper, we develop a new soft-decision-driven sparse channel estimation and turbo equalization scheme in the triply selective MIMO UWA. First, the Homotopy recursive least square dichotomous coordinate descent (Homotopy RLS-DCD) adaptive algorithm, recently proposed for sparse single-input single-output system identification, is extended to adaptively estimate rapid time-varying MIMO sparse channels. Next, the more reliable a posteriori soft-decision symbols, instead of the hard decision symbols or the a priori soft-decision symbols, at the equalizer output, are not only feedback to the Homotopy RLS-DCD-based channel estimator but also to the minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) equalizer. As the turbo iterations progress, the accuracy of channel estimation and the quality of the MMSE equalizer are improved gradually, leading to the enhancement in the turbo equalization performance. This also allows the reduction in pilot overhead. The proposed receiver has been tested by using the data collected from the SHLake2013 experiment. The performance of the receiver is evaluated for various modulation schemes, channel estimators, and MIMO sizes. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed a posteriori soft-decision-driven sparse channel estimation based on the Homotopy RLS-DCD algorithm and turbo equalization offer considerable improvement in system performance over other turbo equalization schemes

    Implementation of an underwater acoustic modem with network capability

The low power modem has implemented turbo equalization algorithms in addition to variable spread rate direct sequence spread spectrum signaling. The network layer implemented on the modem support automatic network discovery, multi hop routing and support for mobile nodes, and when expanded with a single board computer via serial line it supports IP connectivity end-to-end.     Adaptive implementation of turbo multi-user detection architecture

    MULTI-access techniques have been adopted widely for communications in underwater acoustic channels, which present many challenges to the development of reliable and practical systems. In such an environment, the unpredictable and complex ocean conditions cause the acoustic waves to be affected by many factors such as limited bandwidth, large propagation losses, time variations and long latency, which limit the usefulness of such techniques. Additionally, multiple access interference (MAI) signals and poor estimation of the unknown channel parameters in the presence of limited training sequences are two of the major problems that degrade the performance of such technologies. In this thesis, two different single-element multi-access schemes, interleave division multiple access (IDMA) and code division multiple access (CDMA), employing decision feedback equalization (DFE) and soft Rake-based architectures, are proposed for multi-user underwater communication applications. By using either multiplexing pilots or continuous pilots, these adaptive turbo architectures with carrier phase tracking are jointly optimized based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion and adapted iteratively by exchanging soft information in terms of Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR) estimates with the single-user’s channel decoders. The soft-Rake receivers utilize developed channel estimation and the detection is implemented using parallel interference cancellation (PIC) to remove MAI effects between users. These architectures are investigated and applied to simulated data and data obtained from realistic underwater communication trials using off-line processing of signals acquired during sea-trials in the North Sea. The results of different scenarios demonstrate the penalty in performance as the fading induces irreducible error rates that increase with channel delay spread and emphasize the benefits of using coherent direct adaptive receivers in such reverberant channels. The convergence behaviour of the detectors is evaluated using EXIT chart analyses and issues such as the adaptation parameters and their effects on the performance are also investigated. However, in some cases the receivers with partial knowledge of the interleavers’ patterns or codes can still achieve performance comparable to those with full knowledge.     Doppler compensation algorithms for DSP-based implementation of OFDM underwater acoustic communication systems

    In recent years, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has gained considerable attention in the development of underwater communication (UWC) systems for civilian and military applications. However, the wideband nature of the communication links necessitate robust algorithms to combat the consequences of severe channel conditions such as frequency selectivity, ambient noise, severe multipath and Doppler Effect due to velocity change between the transmitter and receiver. This velocity perturbation comprises two scenarios; the first induces constant time scale expansion/compression or zero acceleration during the transmitted packet time, and the second is time varying Doppler-shift. The latter is an increasingly important area in autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) applications. The aim of this thesis is to design a low complexity OFDM-based receiver structure for underwater communication that tackles the inherent Doppler effect and is applicable for developing real-time systems on a digital signal processor (DSP). The proposed structure presents a paradigm in modem design from previous generations of single carrier receivers employing computationally expensive equalizers. The thesis demonstrates the issues related to designing a practical OFDM system, such as channel coding and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In channel coding, the proposed algorithms employ convolutional bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) to obtain a higher degree of protection against power fading caused by the channel. A novel receiver structure that combines an adaptive Doppler-shift correction and BICM-ID for multi-carrier systems is presented. In addition, the selective mapping (SLM) technique has been utilized for PAPR. Due to their time varying and frequency selective channel nature, the proposed systems are investigated via both laboratory simulations and experiments conducted in the North Sea off the UK’s North East coast.
