Is there room for the BBC in the mental lexicon? On the recognition of acronyms

    Get PDF
It has been suggested that acronyms like BBC are processed like real words. This claim has been based on improved performance with acronyms in the Reicher-Wheeler task, the letter string matching task, the visual feature integration task, and the N400 component in event-related potential (ERP) studies. Unfortunately, in all these tasks performance on acronyms resembled performance on pseudowords more than performance on words. To further assess the similarity of acronyms and words, we focused on the meaning of the acronyms and used masked priming to examine whether target words can be primed to the same extent with associatively related acronyms as with associatively related words. Such priming was possible at a stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) of 84ms. In addition, the priming of the acronyms did not depend on the letter case in which they were presented: The target word books was primed as much by isbn and iSbN as by ISBN

The planning and control of multiple task work: a study of secretarial office administration

This paper reports an attempt to construct a design-oriented model of the planning and control of multiple task work (PCMT) based on observations of secretarial office administration (SOA). The model is design-oriented in that it is intended to assist a designer to reason about the behaviours of an interactive human-computer worksystem; in this case, the planning and control behaviours of worksystems which carry out multiple task work. Design-oriented models of engineering contrast with the understanding-oriented models of science, which offer an understanding of phenomena in the form of their explanation and prediction

Abstract : This research is about the Lawa Safar tradition, a term used by the Morella people to refer to the bath routine on the last Wednesday of Safar month in the Islamic calendar every year. Its aim is to find out its historical roots, analyze it from the aspects of Islamic law, and see the prospects for its development. This descriptive qualitative research relies on literature sources which are strengthened by interviews of ritual actors. From the analysis carried out, it is not certain when Lawa Safar began to be carried out, but as in other places that carry out a similar tradition, the Lawa Safar ritual is influenced by the assumption that Safar is the month of disaster. Lawa Safar is carried out as an effort to repel reinforcements', a prayer to save people from danger and disaster. There is nothing contrary to the teachings of Islam in the series of Lawa Safar rituals, therefore, this tradition can be maintained as one of the syiars of Islam. Moreover, with the status of Morella today as one of the main tourist destinations in Maluku, it is very possible for the Lawa Safar tradition to be developed into one of the annual religious tourism events.

A Fast DOA Estimation Algorithm Based on Polarization MUSIC

    Get PDF
A fast DOA estimation algorithm developed from MUSIC, which also benefits from the processing of the signals' polarization information, is presented. Besides performance enhancement in precision and resolution, the proposed algorithm can be exerted on various forms of polarization sensitive arrays, without specific requirement on the array's pattern. Depending on the continuity property of the space spectrum, a huge amount of computation incurred in the calculation of 4-D space spectrum is averted. Performance and computation complexity analysis of the proposed algorithm is discussed and the simulation results are presented. Compared with conventional MUSIC, it is indicated that the proposed algorithm has considerable advantage in aspects of precision and resolution, with a low computation complexity proportional to a conventional 2-D MUSIC

ABSTRACT Social institutions are rules that apply in regulating human behavior in acting based on considerations of norms and values that live in the life of society. This study aims to determine the existence and benefits of socio-cultural institutions in the Nuaulu tribe community. Data collection techniques with observation and in-depth interviews. Research informants came from elements of the state government, traditional leaders, youth leaders, educators and community leaders. The results of the data analysis concluded that hereditary customs strongly influenced the life of the Nuaulu people with the loyalty of the people in carrying out the prevailing institutions. The economic system and the community's livelihood system are farming, processing sago, gathering and laboring. The socio-cultural institutional arrangements are in the form of an adult ceremony for boys (Brokeneri), an adult ceremony for girls (pinamou), a wedding ceremony, a pregnancy ceremony, a birth ceremony, a haircut ceremony (tihtikuau) and a funeral ceremony.
