    CAiSE Radar 2016

    Get PDF
The CAiSE Radar is an experimental format, established for CAiSE 2016, to make CAiSE workshops livelier, exciting, stimulate discussions, and attract additional active participants by establishing an environment where not only well established and validated research is reported but research in infancy, new ideas, and potentially interesting research projects can be presented and discussed. So similarly to a radar, the idea is to enable researchers to look into the future of the field and identify upcoming trends early. The aim of such effort is on one hand to contribute to the building of research communities and promote the integration of young researchers into the community, and on the other hand to provide opportunities to discuss ideas early and to receive additional opinions on planned research

Bootstrapping enterprise models with business continuity processes and DEMO

Orientação: Sérgio Luís Proença Duarte GuerreiroBusiness Continuity Plan (BCP) ensures the continuity of business processes in catastrophe or disaster situations, building organizational resilience and mitigating risks. Theoretically, BCP covers all the roles throughout the company, and identi es a blueprint of all key functions and processes with the objective of maintaining or restoring critical operations. However, due to poor documentation and misinterpretation of the complex business processes between the stakeholders, pinpointing and documenting all the key functions and processes is still a challenging task. The research methodology used to conduct this thesis was the research of information and literature review and was supported by a case study in an insurance company. It studies and presents a new approach to complement the management of the BCP, supported by a conceptual integration of DEMO and the Business Continuity Planning. It presents an evaluation of this proposal and contributes with outcome learnings from the practice. The aim is to complement and leverage enterprise's domain knowledge about key business processes and functional needs. The bene ts of Design & Engineering Methodology for Organization should be tested in order to represent business processes at any domain, and therefore, aid managers in implementing and maintaining BCP

Analysis, Selection, and Implementation of a Case Management System for Local City Government Attorney\u27s Office

This paper focuses on the business analysis, selection, and implementation of a case management system for a local government City Attorney\u27s Office which is a document management system in addition to calendaring, notes, tasks, and billing. Their current system relies on paper document organization and as well as some electronic documentation in a simple file folder structure on a windows network file server. A business analysis review demonstrated the need for a cost effective automated business system to support and manage daily business processes, automate document creation and filing, track deadlines and tasks, and comply with new document retention and discovery requirements. In addition to the automation of business processes, the document management system added a layer of security to document access as well as control over document retention and destruction in accordance with new federal regulations. Most importantly, the time and cost savings added by the case management system has allowed the City Attorney\u27s Office to add civil litigation to their services

Theorising Evidence-Informed Learning Technology Enterprises: A Participatory Design-Based Research Approach

    Get PDF
The goal of this doctoral work was to build a bridge between academia and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the educational technology (edtech) sector by bringing the rigour of academic research methods to start-up and scale-up environments so that they can conceptualise and realise products that are built with evidence from the learning sciences. The overall research question, What theoretical framework supports edtech enterprises to build evidence-informed products and services? is answered through a design-based research methodology with six Cycles of research, grouped into three Phases, each with goals that evolve in an iterative way. A design-based research approach was chosen after a highly exploratory Phase surveying London’s edtech ecosystem prior to Cycle 1. Part 1 (Cycles 1 and 2) focused on developing the construct in question (a practical framework for building research-minded edtech enterprises) through a participatory design process with key Participants. Part 2 (Cycles 3 and 4) focused on evaluating the new construct with Participants. Part 3 (Cycles 5 and 6) validated the framework developed in Parts 1 and 2 with edtech enterprises both from the EDUCATE programme and also the greater global ecosystem. The theoretical contribution of this study is the ELTE construct and its 7 Sub-Constructs, including Learning Culture, Leadership Vision, Sense of Purpose, Teamwork, Research Know-How and Action Orientation; the ELTE Survey outlining all facets each Sub-Construct in the framework; and the ELTE Sub-Construct Hierarchy Model, introducing Sub-Construct dependencies. Methodological contributions of this study include the ELTE Action Model, an effective boundary object for researchers when approaching edtech enterprises to understand how the ELTE framework has uniquely manifested within the structures of their organisations, and ELTE Hallmark Questions, an introductory tools for researchers to give context to enterprises regarding the ELTE model prior to a workshop, line of inquiry, or discussion regarding the model’s particular manifestation enterprise context. The contributions of this study represent an intellectual advancement in our understanding of evidence-informed design and development within the edtech sector, and it provides a tool of practical use to edtech SMEs that want to become Evidence-informed Learning Technology Enterprises

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE DECISION TO OUTSOURCE MONITORING SERVICE TO CLOUD

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this thesis work is to help firms understand values that cloud based IT asset monitoring service brings and find factors that influence the decision to order cloud based monitoring service. Monitoring solutions can predict or detect a system failure and report them so that business critical IT systems are fixed on time before business is interrupted. Traditional on-premise systems continue to get harder to manage in-house because of maintenance cost and complexity. When monitoring service is migrated to cloud, it will inherit many characteristics of cloud that will be discussed in this paper. Design/methodology/approach – Articles on cloud services as well as monitoring services were reviewed. Transaction cost economics theory was used to guide this thesis work. Qualitative interviews were conducted and evaluated using thematic analysis approach. Findings – Monitoring service inherits a lot of benefits and barriers of cloud. Security concerns are however not that realistic because monitoring service does not store user confidential information. Service level agreements are risk factors because of third party infrastructure and the Internet dependencies. However, cost related benefits and technology innovations are found to be significant factors that help decision to adopt cloud base monitoring services
