    D4M 3.0: Extended Database and Language Capabilities

    The D4M tool was developed to address many of today's data needs. This tool is used by hundreds of researchers to perform complex analytics on unstructured data. Over the past few years, the D4M toolbox has evolved to support connectivity with a variety of new database engines, including SciDB. D4M-Graphulo provides the ability to do graph analytics in the Apache Accumulo database. Finally, an implementation using the Julia programming language is also now available. In this article, we describe some of our latest additions to the D4M toolbox and our upcoming D4M 3.0 release. We show through benchmarking and scaling results that we can achieve fast SciDB ingest using the D4M-SciDB connector, that using Graphulo can enable graph algorithms on scales that can be memory limited, and that the Julia implementation of D4M achieves comparable performance or exceeds that of the existing MATLAB(R) implementation.Comment: IEEE HPEC 201

    Labor productivity in Europe: Evidence from a sample of regions

    The present paper aims at analyzing the sources of labor productivity in Europe at regional level. We study the productivity performance in a sample of twenty European regions belonging to four countries (France, Germany, Italy and Spain). Exploiting the increasing availability of disaggregated data at regional level, we propose both a descriptive statistics and an econometric analysis of productivity sources since 1995. Our main finding is that the levels and sources of labor productivity are rather heterogeneous across the sample. This heterogeneity is found to be associated with disparities both across sectors and regions.Labor productivity, productivity determinants, European regions.

    Evidence on Determinants of Foreign Investments: the Case of Three European Regions. A revised Version

    This study aims at analysing the determinants of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows for a group of European regions. The originality of this approach lies in the use of disaggregated data by sector at regional level. First, we develop a qualitative description of our database and discuss the importance of the determinants in attracting FDI. Then, we provide an econometric exercise to identify the potential determinants of FDI inflows. We show that, although relying on a combination of determinants that differs from one region to another, regional FDI inflows mainly depend on regional rather than national determinants.

    The effect of local corticosteroid injection on F-wave conduction velocity and sympathetic skin response in carpal tunnel syndrome

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of steroid injection for the treatment of the carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), with F-wave parameters and sympathetic skin response (SSR). Seventeen hands of 10 women patients were treated with local steroid injection with 2-month follow-up. All patients underwent single injection into the carpal tunnel. Response to injection was measured nerve conduction studies (NCSs), median nerve F waves, and SSR before and after treatment. To determine the normal values, 42 hands of 21 healthy women were also studied. There was a significant improvement of sensory and motor nerve conduction values when compared to baseline values (P < 0.01). At the end of follow-up period, the median sensory distal latency and the sensory latency differences between the median and the ulnar nerve were improved 35 and 65%, respectively. The maximum, mean F-wave amplitudes and chronodispersion showed a slight improvement with respect to baseline values and controls, but statistical significance was not achieved after treatment. Although no statistically significant improvements were observed in SSR parameters, slightly decreased amplitudes and increased habituation of SSR were noted at the end of the treatment. The present study shows that the local steroid injection results in improvement in NCSs values, but the F-wave parameters were not effectual in short-term outcome of CTS treatment. These findings suggest that the sensory latency differences between the median and the ulnar wrist-to-digit 4 are better parameters in the median nerve recovery after treatment than the median sensory distal latency. Furthermore, the SSR does not seem to be a sensitive method in follow-up of CTS treatment

    Polystore mathematics of relational algebra

    Financial transactions, internet search, and data analysis are all placing increasing demands on databases. SQL, NoSQL, and NewSQL databases have been developed to meet these demands and each offers unique benefits. SQL, NoSQL, and NewSQL databases also rely on different underlying mathematical models. Polystores seek to provide a mechanism to allow applications to transparently achieve the benefits of diverse databases while insulating applications from the details of these databases. Integrating the underlying mathematics of these diverse databases can be an important enabler for polystores as it enables effective reasoning across different databases. Associative arrays provide a common approach for the mathematics of polystores by encompassing the mathematics found in different databases: sets (SQL), graphs (NoSQL), and matrices (NewSQL). Prior work presented the SQL relational model in terms of associative arrays and identified key mathematical properties that are preserved within SQL. This work provides the rigorous mathematical definitions, lemmas, and theorems underlying these properties. Specifically, SQL Relational Algebra deals primarily with relations - multisets of tuples - and operations on and between those relations. These relations can be modeled as associative arrays by treating tuples as non-zero rows in an array. Operations in relational algebra are built as compositions of standard operations on associative arrays which mirror their matrix counterparts. These constructions provide insight into how relational algebra can be handled via array operations. As an example application, the composition of two projection operations is shown to also be a projection, and the projection of a union is shown to be equal to the union of the projections
