    Large scale group network optimization

    Every knapsack problem may be relaxed to a cyclic group problem. In 1969, Gomory found the subadditive characterization of facets of the master cyclic group problem. We simplify the subadditive relations by the substitution of complementarities and discover a minimal representation of the subadditive polytope for the master cyclic group problem. By using the minimal representation, we characterize the vertices of cardinality length 3 and implement the shooting experiment from the natural interior point. The shooting from the natural interior point is a shooting from the inside of the plus level set of the subadditive polytope. It induces the shooting for the knapsack problem. From the shooting experiment for the knapsack problem we conclude that the most hit facet is the knapsack mixed integer cut which is the 2-fold lifting of a mixed integer cut. We develop a cutting plane algorithm augmenting cutting planes generated by shooting, and implement it on Wong-Coppersmith digraphs observing that only small number of cutting planes are enough to produce the optimal solution. We discuss a relaxation of shooting as a clue to quick shooting.     It is known that the suspension of a simplicial complex can be realized with only one additional point. Suitable iterations of this construction generate highly symmetric simplicial complexes with various interesting combinatorial and topological properties. In particular, infinitely many non-PL spheres as well as contractible simplicial complexes with a vertex-transitive group of automorphisms can be obtained in this way.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure

    Modulo scheduling for a fully-distributed clustered VLIW architecture

    Clustering is an approach that many microprocessors are adopting in recent times in order to mitigate the increasing penalties of wire delays. We propose a novel clustered VLIW architecture which has all its resources partitioned among clusters, including the cache memory. A modulo scheduling scheme for this architecture is also proposed. This algorithm takes into account both register and memory inter-cluster communications so that the final schedule results in a cluster assignment that favors cluster locality in cache references and register accesses. It has been evaluated for both 2- and 4-cluster configurations and for differing numbers and latencies of inter-cluster buses.     The Polyhedral Geometry of Partially Ordered Sets

    Pairs of polyhedra connected by a piecewise-linear bijection appear in different fields of mathematics. The model example of this situation are the order and chain polytopes introduced by Stanley in, whose defining inequalities are given by a finite partially ordered set. The two polytopes have different face lattices, but admit a volume and lattice point preserving piecewise-linear bijection called the transfer map. Other areas like representation theory and enumerative combinatorics provide more examples of pairs of polyhedra that are similar to order and chain polytopes. The goal of this thesis is to analyze this phenomenon and move towards a common theoretical framework describing these polyhedra and their piecewise-linear bijections. A first step in this direction was done by Ardila, Bliem and Salazar, where the authors generalize order and chain polytopes by replacing the defining data with a marked poset. These marked order and chain polytopes still admit a piecewise-linear transfer map and include the Gelfand-Tsetlin and Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes from representation theory among other examples. We consider more polyhedra associated to marked posets and obtain new results on their face structure and combinatorial interplay. Other examples found in the literature bear resemblance to these marked poset polyhedra but do not admit a description as such. This is our motivation to consider distributive polyhedra, which are characterized by describing networks by Felsner and Knauer analogous to the description of order polytopes by Hasse diagrams. For a subclass of distributive polyhedra we are able to construct a piecewise-linear bijection to another polyhedron related to chain polytopes. We give a description of this transfer map and the defining inequalities of the image in terms of the underlying network
