    From Pillars to AI Technology-Based Forest Fire Protection Systems

    The importance of forest environment in the perspective of the biodiversity as well as from the economic resources which forests enclose, is more than evident. Any threat posed to this critical component of the environment should be identified and attacked through the use of the most efficient available technological means. Early warning and immediate response to a fire event are critical in avoiding great environmental damages. Fire risk assessment, reliable detection and localization of fire as well as motion planning, constitute the most vital ingredients of a fire protection system. In this chapter, we review the evolution of the forest fire protection systems and emphasize on open issues and the improvements that can be achieved using artificial intelligence technology. We start our tour from the pillars which were for a long time period, the only possible method to oversee the forest fires. Then, we will proceed to the exploration of early AI systems and will end-up with nowadays systems that might receive multimodal data from satellites, optical and thermal sensors, smart phones and UAVs and use techniques that cover the spectrum from early signal processing algorithms to latest deep learning-based ones to achieving the ultimate goal

    Development of an Adaptive Model Predictive Control for Platooning Safety in Battery Electric Vehicles

    The recent and continuous improvement in the transportation field provides several different opportunities for enhancing safety and comfort in passenger vehicles. In this context, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) might provide additional benefits, including smoothness of the traffic flow and collision avoidance. In addition, Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication may be exploited in the car-following model to obtain further improvements in safety and comfort by guaranteeing fast response to critical events. In this paper, firstly an Adaptive Model Predictive Control was developed for managing the Cooperative ACC scenario of two vehicles; as a second step, the safety analysis during a cut-in maneuver was performed, extending the platooning vehicles’ number to four. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology was assessed for in different driving scenarios such as diverse cruising speeds, steep accelerations, and aggressive decelerations. Moreover, the controller was validated by considering various speed profiles of the leader vehicle, including a real drive cycle obtained using a random drive cycle generator software. Results demonstrated that the proposed control strategy was capable of ensuring safety in virtually all test cases and quickly responding to unexpected cut-in maneuvers. Indeed, different scenarios have been tested, including acceleration and deceleration phases at high speeds where the control strategy successfully avoided any collision and stabilized the vehicle platoon approximately 20–30 s after the sudden cut-in. Concerning the comfort, it was demonstrated that improvements were possible in the aggressive drive cycle whereas different scenarios were found in the random cycle, depending on where the cut-in maneuver occurred

    Autonomous Pedestrian Detection in Transit Buses

    This project created a proof of concept for an automated pedestrian detection and avoidance system designed for transit buses. The system detects objects up to 12 meters away, calculates the distance from the system using a solid-state LIDAR, and determines if that object is human by passive infrared. This triggers a visual and sound warning. A Xilinx Zynq-SoC utilizing programmable logic and an ARM-based processing system drive data fusion, and an external power unit makes it configurable for transit-buses

    Seamless Interactions Between Humans and Mobility Systems

    As mobility systems, including vehicles and roadside infrastructure, enter a period of rapid and profound change, it is important to enhance interactions between people and mobility systems. Seamless human—mobility system interactions can promote widespread deployment of engaging applications, which are crucial for driving safety and efficiency. The ever-increasing penetration rate of ubiquitous computing devices, such as smartphones and wearable devices, can facilitate realization of this goal. Although researchers and developers have attempted to adapt ubiquitous sensors for mobility applications (e.g., navigation apps), these solutions often suffer from limited usability and can be risk-prone. The root causes of these limitations include the low sensing modality and limited computational power available in ubiquitous computing devices. We address these challenges by developing and demonstrating that novel sensing techniques and machine learning can be applied to extract essential, safety-critical information from drivers natural driving behavior, even actions as subtle as steering maneuvers (e.g., left-/righthand turns and lane changes). We first show how ubiquitous sensors can be used to detect steering maneuvers regardless of disturbances to sensing devices. Next, by focusing on turning maneuvers, we characterize drivers driving patterns using a quantifiable metric. Then, we demonstrate how microscopic analyses of crowdsourced ubiquitous sensory data can be used to infer critical macroscopic contextual information, such as risks present at road intersections. Finally, we use ubiquitous sensors to profile a driver’s behavioral patterns on a large scale; such sensors are found to be essential to the analysis and improvement of drivers driving behavior.PHDComputer Science & EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Integrating passive ubiquitous surfaces into human-computer interaction

    Mobile technologies enable people to interact with computers ubiquitously. This dissertation investigates how ordinary, ubiquitous surfaces can be integrated into human-computer interaction to extend the interaction space beyond the edge of the display. It turns out that acoustic and tactile features generated during an interaction can be combined to identify input events, the user, and the surface. In addition, it is shown that a heterogeneous distribution of different surfaces is particularly suitable for realizing versatile interaction modalities. However, privacy concerns must be considered when selecting sensors, and context can be crucial in determining whether and what interaction to perform.Mobile Technologien ermöglichen den Menschen eine allgegenwärtige Interaktion mit Computern.
