    Hawkers’ Satisfaction with A Local Authority Water Meter Reading Management

    This paper aims to identify hawkers' satisfaction with a local authority water meter reading management. Three years ago, the licensing and business development department installed meter readers at the hawker centres. Currently, water meter readers are no longer available, causing the department substantial losses. There are complaints on the use of bulk meters that the amount charged each month is indifferent. Several water meters in the hawker centres are not working correctly, resulting in difficulties by the authority to process the correct amount of water bills. The hawkers need to travel to the headquarters to make payment, making it more difficult. Hawkers are not happy because they have to pay the same amount though they might have consumed less than others. A total of 176 questionnaires was distributed to 500 hawkers in Kuala Lumpur City Hall (KLCH). Data were analysed using SPSS. The results showed that only one variable, water meter management, has a significant and weak relationship, influencing hawkers' satisfaction. This finding will give an excellent insight to the local authority in better control of water meter reading at hawker centres

    Social Media Marketing Strategies for Improving Customer Relationships

    Despite the potential benefits of social media marketing (SMM) to improve customer relationships, some small business leaders lack SMM strategies to improve customer relationships. Small business leaders who fail to improve customer relationships may observe a decline in their customer base, leading to decreased profitability. Grounded in Berry’s relationship marketing theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore SMM strategies small business leaders used to improve customer relationships. Data were collected via reviews of company documentation, participants’ social media pages, and online semistructured interviews with five small retail business leaders who used SMM strategies to improve customer relationships. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis and three major themes emerged: social media engagement strategy, target audience strategy, and social customer relationship management strategy. A key recommendation is for business owners to use social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to communicate, interact, and obtain feedback from customers. The implications for positive social change include the potential to increase employment opportunities and the standards of living in the community

    An effective tool for supply chain decision support during new product development process

    The global marketplace has transformed supply chain design into a discipline which requires business sense supported by mathematical expertise. Several methods have been introduced to support supply chain design, most notably mixed integer programming. The current methods are tailor-made for situations where a product's bill-of-material is fixed. However, this assumption does not hold during product development where several competing product designs exist. Therefore this research investigates the question of what is an effective way to support supply chain decisions during new product development. The study is divided into four research questions, corresponding to the articles from which the dissertation is compiled: (1) Does a product structure-driven method exist for modeling and analyzing supply chains? (2) If such a method is discovered, what is its mathematical formulation? (3) Is there evidence to support the theoretical and practical usability of such a method? (4) How can strategic supply chain decisions be validated? Regarding question (1) the research finds that there is a shortage of methods that fulfill supply chain modeling and analysis requirements imposed by new product development process. During the research a Petri-net based method was constructed which satisfies these requirements. For question (2), the formal definitions of the constructed Petri net class are provided. Regarding question (3), the research finds that the created method and associated tool are useful aids when solving the question of the effect of demand variation and the number of product variants on the optimal supply chain. Furthermore, interviews with end users of the tool implementation provide evidence of the Petri net method's practical usefulness. Regarding question (4), the research finds that the validation of strategic supply chain decisions from companies' reporting systems is important, but it has not become a common practice due to the challenges in integrating various IT systems

    Quantity Surveying (QS) firms, like all organisations must continuously formulate and execute the strategies required to enable them to survive and succeed in a constantly changing business environment. Key challenges that firms are required to grapple with include the rapid pace of technological advances affecting professional practice, intense internal competition, and the struggle to attract and retain key talent. In the midst of these operation challenges, QS firm leaders must also dedicate resource to planning and executing strategy. Unfortunately, strategic planning in QS firms is often ad-hoc or neglected, and there is a distinct lack of framework s and tools specific to the QS context. This study set out to redress this gap in literature and theory, by providing firstly a framework of key factors to be considered in a situation analysis – the core activity of the Design School approach to strategic planning, and secondly to provide a quantitative model based on that framework to enable firms to diagnose their Strategic Health – that is, their current performance and areas for improvement and optimisation, prior to formulating, selecting and executing strategic options to achieve their mission and vision. To achieve this, this study takes a multi-stage mixed methods approach. Firstly, following a review of the literature, in-depth semi-structured exploratory interviews were undertaken with key leaders in the Australian and New Zealand QS profession that led to the development of a situation analysis (SA) framework of 28 External Factors and 26 Internal Factors. Two stages of descriptive survey were undertaken (in 2013 and 2020) which enables the development of a quantitative Strategic Health model based on the framework Factors. Finally, the developed model was tested amongst five similar case study firms. Based on the case study results the developed model correlates strongly with five self-reported measures of success. The developed SA framework provides QS firms with empirically validated terms of reference when undertaking SA as part of their own strategic planning process. Due to the relatively small sample sizes involved, caution is urged in applying the developed Strategic Health model to situations outside of the population samples in the study. Further testing of the model in larger population samples or in associated industries are recommendations for further research. ERP are extremely complex information systems, whose implementation is often a complex adventure for business enterprises. The organizational relevance and risk of ERP projects make it important for organizations to focus on ways to make ERP implementation successful. However, dealing with risk management in ERP project introduction is an ambitious task. Numerous risk factors have to be taken into account which include technological and managerial aspects, both psychological and sociological; moreover they can be deeply interconnected and have indirect e ects on the project. Therefore, the risk management process is highly difficult and uncertain. The second offers a wide-ranging list of areas where Operational Research has been applied. The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion. It should be used as a point of reference or first-port-of-call for a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims.
