Electrical performance characteristics of high power converters for space power applications
The first goal of this project was to investigate various converters that would be suitable for processing electric power derived from a nuclear reactor. The implementation is indicated of a 20 kHz system that includes a source converter, a ballast converter, and a fixed frequency converter for generating the 20 kHz output. This system can be converted to dc simply by removing the fixed frequency converter. This present study emphasized the design and testing of the source and ballast converters. A push-pull current-fed (PPCF) design was selected for the source converter, and a 2.7 kW version of this was implemented using three 900 watt modules in parallel. The characteristic equation for two converters in parallel was derived, but this analysis did not yield any experimental methods for measuring relative stability. The three source modules were first tested individually and then in parallel as a 2.7 kW system. All tests proved to be satisfactory; the system was stable; efficiency and regulation were acceptable; and the system was fault tolerant. The design of a ballast-load converter, which was operated as a shunt regulator, was investigated. The proposed power circuit is suitable for use with BJTs because proportional base drive is easily implemented. A control circuit which minimizes switching frequency ripple and automatically bypasses a faulty shunt section was developed. A nonlinear state-space-averaged model of the shunt regulator was developed and shown to produce an accurate incremental (small-signal) dynamic model, even though the usual state-space-averaging assumptions were not met. The nonlinear model was also shown to be useful for large-signal dynamic simulation using PSpice
A Flexible DSTATCOM Operating in Voltage or Current Control Mode
The topology and control are discussed of a distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) that can be operated flexibly in the voltage or current control mode. In the voltage control mode, the DSTATCOM can force the voltage of a distribution bus to be balanced sinusoids. In the current control mode, it can cancel distortion caused by the load, such that current drawn by the compensated load is pure balanced sinusoid. Both these objectives are achieved, irrespective of unbalance and harmonic distortions in load currents or source voltages. The chosen DSTATCOM topology includes three single-phase voltage source inverters connected in parallel to a filter-capacitor, which allows the high-frequency component of the current to pass. A switching control scheme is proposed, and its suitability is proved for this problem. The proposed scheme is verified using computer simulation studie

Single-Phase 13-Level Power Conditioning System for Peak Power Reduction of a High-Speed Railway Substation
The control and operation of a single-phase 13-level power conditioning system (PCS) for peak power reduction of a high-speed railway substation (HSRS) are proposed. This PCS is a single-phase 3100 V, 2 MVA 13-level H-bridge multi-level inverter structure. It has excellent power quality. It is easy to serialize by voltage. In addition, the DC bus power of each cell inverter is supplied by lithium-ion batteries. The generalized reduction gradient optimization algorithm based on past load pattern is applied to the power management system for peak power reduction of HSRS. The phase detector and power controller for the control of a single-phase PCS based on virtually coordinated axes using an all-pass filter are expected to be robust to external disturbances with fast response characteristics. This study also proposes an adapted select switch (ASS) method that can change the switching depending on the operation state of PCS and the state of charge (SOC) of the battery to minimize battery imbalance by controlling each cell inverter of the H-bridge. The validity of the proposed system was confirmed by PSiM simulation and experiments using a demonstration system of 6 MW PCS and 2.68 MWh batteries at one of Gyeongbu high-speed line substations in Korea.

An 'active' passive-filter topology for low power DC/AC inverters
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.This thesis presents a new output passive filter for voltage source inverter applications which is based on a shunt connected single tuned filter topology. The proposed circuit has the advantage of tracing harmonic components wherever its location in the frequency spectrum. The change in the harmonic location might be as a result of a change in the inverter operating frequency. Also, the proposed filter achieves harmonic reduction close to the traditional single tuned passive filter. In order to show the superiority of the proposed model, a comparison is introduced with other self tuning harmonic filters showing merits and drawbacks of each technique. The proposed circuit (when integrated in square wave inverter) has also shown a tremendous reduction in the switching losses in comparison with high frequency Pulse Width Modulation inverter. Mathematical analyses showing the design of the proposed filter together with extensive simulation results to verify the design are also introduced. The practical implementation of the system is presented and the results show excellent agreement with the theory and simulation. In order to appreciate the proposed filter a new method for classifying passive power filters is introduced. The review includes a comparison of these configurations showing their merit and drawbacks
