Finally, the framework acts in defense when the deadlock signal is triggered from the learning and/or the analytics engine through streaming down concurrent transactions into a temporarily queuing data structure. We put our model into a test and built a simulation to quantify the added benefit of each component of our framework. Ant colony optimization algorithm for dynamic scheduling of jobs in computational grid

Computational grid is gaining more importance due to the needs for large-scale computing capacity. In computational grid, job scheduling is one of the main factors affecting grid computing performance. Job scheduling problem is classified as an NP-hard problem.Such a problem can be solved only by using approximate algorithms such as heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms.Among different optimization algorithms for job scheduling, ant colony system algorithm is a popular meta-heuristic algorithm which has the ability to solve different types of NP-hard problems.However, ant colony system algorithm has a deficiency in its heuristic function which affects the algorithm behavior in terms of finding the shortest connection between edges.This research focuses on a new heuristic function where information about recent ants’ discoveries has been considered.The new heuristic function has been integrated into the classical ant colony system algorithm.Furthermore, the enhanced algorithm has been implemented to solve the travelling salesman problem as well as in scheduling of jobs in computational grid.A simulator with dynamic environment feature to mimic real life application has been development to validate the proposed enhanced ant colony system algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed enhanced algorithm produced better output in term of utilization and makespan in both domains

Health, Health Perceptions, Healthcare Practices, and Influencing Factors among Korean Immigrants Living in Rural Texas

The population of Asian immigrants in the United States increased 43.3% from 2000 to 2010. During the same period, Texas experienced an increase of Korean immigrants of over 47%. Despite the increase of Korean immigrants, only a minimal number of studies explored health and healthcare needs specific to this population. Furthermore, none of the studies addressed Korean immigrants living in rural Texas. Hence, an ethnographic study was conducted to examine the health and healthcare among Korean immigrants living in rural Texas. Face-to-face interviews were conducted and transcribed. Five major themes emerged which included acculturation, health and health perceptions, healthcare, relaxation and extracurricular activities, and social connectedness. Rural Korean immigrants had arduous work schedules, financial constraints, and lacked English competency causing stress and fatigue. Furthermore, chronic health problems such as hypertension and hypercholesterolemia existed. However, a majority of the immigrants felt their health was good and engaged in some form of health promotion activities, such as walking or exercising. Despite the health problems, Korean immigrants did not perceive the need for routine healthcare. In addition to receiving no routine healthcare, immigrants did not socialize with other Korean immigrants for a variety of reasons. Furthermore, organizations to assist Korean immigrants did not exist in their community

Business intelligence for sustainable competitive advantage: the case of telecommunications companies in Malaysia

The concept of Business Intelligence (BI) as an essential competitive tool has been widely emphasized in the strategic management literature. Yet the sustainability of the firms’ competitive advantage provided by BI capability is not well explained. To fill this gap, this study attempts to develop a model for successful BI deployment and empirically examines the association between BI deployment and sustainable competitive advantage.Taking the telecommunications industry in Malaysia as a case example, the research particularly focuses on the influencing perceptions held by telecommunications decision makers and executives on factors that impact successful BI deployment. The research further investigates the relationship between successful BI deployment and sustainable competitive advantage of the telecommunications organizations. Another important aim of this study is to determine the effect of moderating factors such as organization culture, business strategy and use of BI tools on BI deployment and the sustainability of firm’s competitive advantage.This research uses combination of theoretical foundation of resource-based theory and diffusion of innovation theory to examine BI success and its relationship with firm’s sustainability. The research adopts the positivist paradigm and a two-phase sequential mixed method consisting of qualitative and quantitative approaches are employed. A tentative research model is developed first based on extensive literature review. Qualitative field study then is carried out to fine tune the initial research model. Findings from the qualitative method are also used to develop measures and instruments for the next phase of quantitative method. A survey is carried out with sample of business analysts and decision makers in telecommunications firms and is analyzed by Partial Least Square-based Structural Equation Modeling.The findings revealed that some internal resources of the organizations such as BI governance and the perceptions of BI’s characteristics influence the successful deployment of BI. Organizations that practice good BI governance with strong moral and financial support from upper management will have better chance in realizing their dreams of having successful BI initiatives in place. The scope of BI governance includes providing sufficient support and commitment in BI funding and implementation, laying out proper BI infrastructure and staffing and establishing a corporate-wide policy and procedures regarding BI. The perceptions about the characteristics of BI such as its relative advantage, complexity, compatibility and observability are also significant in ensuring BI success. It thus implied that the executives’ positive perceptions towards BI initiatives are deemed necessary. Moreover, the most important results of this study indicated that with BI successfully deployed, executives would use the knowledge provided for their necessary actions in sustaining the organizations’ competitive advantage in terms of economics, social and environmental issues.The BI model well explained how BI was deployed in Malaysian telecommunications companies. This study thus contributes significantly to the existing literature that will assist future BI researchers especially in achieving sustainable competitive advantage. In particular, the model will help practitioners to consider the resources that they are likely to consider when deploying BI. Finally, the applications of this study can be extended through further adaptation in other industries and various geographic contexts

The new approach which runs under the label of an 'epigenetic research program' (ERP) is able, so the core message, to capture the evolutionary development patterns of the socio-economic and the socio-cultural world. This achievement is brought about through the construction of a conceptual, theoretical and modeling apparatus of sufficient transdisciplinary generality and through the separation of two different levels, namely of ERP-meta-levels on the one hand and ERP-levels of application on the other hand. Meta-level elements are characterized, above all, by their transdisciplinary status, being not linked to any particular type of application domain, whereas building Blocks at application levels are clearly connected with special features in natural science or social science domains. With respect to the set of two consecutive articles, part I presents a general summary of the ERP-perspective and part II is devoted to a set of ERP 'transfer modules' mainly for the evolution of modern societies and their knowledge bases.'
