Cultural Differences between Germany and the United States in Landing Page Design
Companies with global operations should consider the culture of their target country in order to be internationally successful despite of globalization. Every marketing strategy should be adapted to the target country and its local cultural background. Companies which offer their products only through online channels need to pay special attention to the design of their websites. Therefore, we analyze in this study the design of United States and German landing pages in the online fitness industry and whether or not changes can improve the conversion rate of a landing page. To answer these questions, we develop and evaluate a culture specific landing page framework with a design science approach. The evaluation shows optimization potential of landing pages for the test elements âfree contentâ and âpromotional picturesâ. Hence, the framework can be used to identify improvement potential for culture specific landing pages, but needs to be validated in other areas, too
Lucy + Jorge Orta, Potential Architecture
Cells are a part of the human body; they are at the origin of its being, its feelings, its emotions, and its sufferings. Thus, they speak the language of the body. There are also cells of habitation. The relationship between people and their habitat is formed in this metaphorical cell. Living and being become a single and unique life experience. Cristina Morozzi
Potential Architecture explores artists Lucy + Jorge Ortaâs recent architectural
endeavors that derive from their fascination with cell biology and the process
of differentiation. Through drawings and sculpture, the artists conceptualize the
communication process the human cell undertakes from its embryonic state, and
the infinite transformations that lead to defined structural organisms.
This new body of work draws from Lucy + Jorge Ortaâs artistic practice, grounded in the universal concerns of community, shelter, migration, and sustainable development. Potential Architecture is a powerful rejoinder to the arbitrary boundaries that define art, architecture, and design
A Place to Call Home
Individuals across the globe do not relate historic migration patterns with current conflicts, which is a problem that encompasses both historic and current migrations. Ironically, individuals who likely descend from immigrants themselves may highlight differences rather than similarities among newcomers while perceiving them as outsiders, and perhaps even exhibiting discrimination toward them. Our group sought to provide an international and historic perspective about migration by paralleling the issues that immigrants --specifically refugees-- face while encouraging individuals to look inward at their own familyâs migratory roots. This was accomplished through a three-pronged approach: (1) obtaining profiles of historic and modern ârefugeesâ; (2) hosting two interactive simulations in which participants experience an emotional understanding of the refugee struggle; and (3) disseminating accurate information to simulation participants. The figure below provides an overview of the problem, solution, and global implication of our project

Google online marketing challenge and research opportunities
The Google Online Marketing Challenge is an ongoing collaboration between Google and academics, to give students experiential learning. The Challenge gives student teams US$200 in AdWords, Googleâs flagship advertising product, to develop online marketing campaigns for actual businesses. The end result is an engaging in-class exercise that provides students and professors with an exciting and pedagogically rigorous competition. Results from surveys at the end of the Challenge reveal positive appraisals from the threeâstudents, businesses, and professorsâmain constituents; general agreement between students and instructors regarding learning outcomes; and a few points of difference between students and instructors. In addition to describing the Challenge and its outcomes, this article reviews the postparticipation questionnaires and subsequent datasets. The questionnaires and results are publicly available, and this article invites educators to mine the datasets, share their results, and offer suggestions for future iterations of the Challenge
The Influence of Cross-Cultural Differences on the Interpretation and Understanding of Aircraft Passenger Safety Briefing Cards
Aircraft passenger safety briefing cards are an important part of passenger safety education aboard commercial aircraft. The cards must be understood by all readers, regardless of age, gender, or culture. Related research indicates that passengers from different cultures might misunderstand the highly specialized instructions on safety cards.
A self-developed test was administered to 172 students from four cultures (British, French, German, U.S.) at seven universities in five countries. Significant differences (
âLittle Gunshots, but with the blaze of lightningâ: Xavier Herbert, Visuality and Human Rights
Xavier Herbert published his bestseller Capricornia in 1938, following two periods spent in the Northern Territory. His next major work, Poor Fellow My Country (1975), was not published until thirty-seven years later, but was also set in the north during the 1930s. One significant difference between the two novels is that by 1975 photo-journalism had become a significant force for influencing public opinion and reforming Aboriginal policy. Herbertâs novel, centring upon Prindy as vulnerable Aboriginal child, marks a sea change in perceptions of Aboriginal people and their place in Australian society, and a radical shift toward use of photography as a means of revealing the violation of human rights after World War II. In this article I review Herbertâs visual narrative strategies in the context of debates about this key historical shift and the growing impact of photography in human rights campaigns. I argue that Poor Fellow My Country should be seen as a textual re-enactment, set in Herbertâs and the nationâs past, yet coloured by more recent social changes that were facilitated and communicated through the cameraâs lens. Like all re-enactments, it is written in the past conditional: it asks, what if things had been different? It poses a profound challenge to the state project of scientific modernity that was the Northern Territory over the first decades of the twentieth century
