    A Review on Energy Consumption Optimization Techniques in IoT Based Smart Building Environments

    In recent years, due to the unnecessary wastage of electrical energy in residential buildings, the requirement of energy optimization and user comfort has gained vital importance. In the literature, various techniques have been proposed addressing the energy optimization problem. The goal of each technique was to maintain a balance between user comfort and energy requirements such that the user can achieve the desired comfort level with the minimum amount of energy consumption. Researchers have addressed the issue with the help of different optimization algorithms and variations in the parameters to reduce energy consumption. To the best of our knowledge, this problem is not solved yet due to its challenging nature. The gap in the literature is due to the advancements in the technology and drawbacks of the optimization algorithms and the introduction of different new optimization algorithms. Further, many newly proposed optimization algorithms which have produced better accuracy on the benchmark instances but have not been applied yet for the optimization of energy consumption in smart homes. In this paper, we have carried out a detailed literature review of the techniques used for the optimization of energy consumption and scheduling in smart homes. The detailed discussion has been carried out on different factors contributing towards thermal comfort, visual comfort, and air quality comfort. We have also reviewed the fog and edge computing techniques used in smart homes

    Load Frequency Control (LFC) Strategies in Renewable Energy‐Based Hybrid Power Systems:A Review

    The hybrid power system is a combination of renewable energy power plants and conventional energy power plants. This integration causes power quality issues including poor settling times and higher transient contents. The main issue of such interconnection is the frequency variations caused in the hybrid power system. Load Frequency Controller (LFC) design ensures the reliable and efficient operation of the power system. The main function of LFC is to maintain the system frequency within safe limits, hence keeping power at a specific range. An LFC should be supported with modern and intelligent control structures for providing the adequate power to the system. This paper presents a comprehensive review of several LFC structures in a diverse configuration of a power system. First of all, an overview of a renewable energy-based power system is provided with a need for the development of LFC. The basic operation was studied in single-area, multi-area and multi-stage power system configurations. Types of controllers developed on different techniques studied with an overview of different control techniques were utilized. The comparative analysis of various controllers and strategies was performed graphically. The future scope of work provided lists the potential areas for conducting further research. Finally, the paper concludes by emphasizing the need for better LFC design in complex power system environments

    Performance of optimal hierarchical type 2 fuzzy controller for load–frequency system with production rate limitation and governor dead band

    AbstractControlling load–frequency is regarded as one of the most important control-related issues in design and exploitation of power systems. Permanent frequency deviation from nominal value directly affects exploitation and reliability of power system. Too much frequency deviation may cause damage to equipment, reduction of network loads efficiency, creation of overload on communication lines and stimulation of network protection tools, and in some unfavorable circumstances, may cause the network collapse. So, it is of great importance to maintain the frequency at its nominal value.It would be useful to make use of the type 2 fuzzy in modeling of uncertainties in systems which are uncertain. In the present article, first, the simplified 4-block type-2 fuzzy has been used for modeling the fuzzy system. Then, fuzzy system regulations are reduced by 33% with the help of hierarchy fuzzy structure. The simplified type-2 fuzzy controller is optimized using the Cuckoo algorithm. Eventually, the performance of the proposed controller is compared to the Mamdani fuzzy controller in terms of the ISE, ITSE, and RMS criteria

    Control of Plant Wide Processes Using Fractional Order Controller

    Fractional order PID controller is gaining popularity because the presence of two extra degrees of freedom, which have the potential to meet up the extra degrees in terms of uncertainty, robustness, output controllability .In other words, the fractional order PID controller is the generalization of the conventional PID controller. In the current study, the fractional order PID controller is designed and implemented for the complex and plant-wide processes. Distillation is the most effective separation process in the chemical and petroleum industries but with a drawback of energy intensivity To reduce the energy consumption two distillation columns can be combined into one column, which is known as dividing wall distillation column (DWC).Though the control of DWC has been addressed but it requires further R&D efforts considering the complexity in control of this process In this work the DWC is controlled by the advanced control strategy like fractional order PID controller. One of the challenging field in the process control is to design control system for the entire chemical plant. We have presented the control system for the HDA plant by implementing the fractional order PID controller. Both the discussed processes are multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) system and these processes are difficult to tune because of the presence of the interaction between the control loops. For the DWC process, the traditional simplified decoupler is used, while for the HDA plant process the equivalent transfer function model is used to handle the MIMO system. For tuning of the fractional-order PID controllers the optimization techniques have been used. The DWC controllers have been tuned by the ev-MOGA multi objective algorithm and the HDA plant controllers are tuned by the cuckoo search method

    An Overview of Evolutionary Algorithms toward Spacecraft Attitude Control

    Evolutionary algorithms can be used to solve interesting problems for aeronautical and astronautical applications, and it is a must to review the fundamentals of the most common evolutionary algorithms being used for those applications. Genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimization, firefly algorithm, ant colony optimization, artificial bee colony optimization, and the cuckoo search algorithm are presented and discussed with an emphasis on astronautical applications. In summary, the genetic algorithm and its variants can be used for a large parameter space but is more efficient in global optimization using a smaller chromosome size such that the number of parameters being optimized simultaneously is less than 1000. It is found that PID controller parameters, nonlinear parameter identification, and trajectory optimization are applications ripe for the genetic algorithm. Ant colony optimization and artificial bee colony optimization are optimization routines more suited for combinatorics, such as with trajectory optimization, path planning, scheduling, and spacecraft load bearing. Particle swarm optimization, firefly algorithm, and cuckoo search algorithms are best suited for large parameter spaces due to the decrease in computation need and function calls when compared to the genetic algorithm family of optimizers. Key areas of investigation for these social evolution algorithms are in spacecraft trajectory planning and in parameter identification

    Swarm Intelligence Autotune For Differential Drive Wheeled Mobile Robot

    Differential Drive Wheeled Mobile Robot (DDWMR) is a nonholonomic robot with constrained movement. Such constraint makes robot position control more difficult. A closed-loop control system such as PID can control robot position. However, DDWMR is a Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output system. There will be many feedback gains to be tuned, and the wrong value will make the system unstable. Therefore this research proposes an offline autotune method to choose optimal feedback gain that minimizes a fitness function. The fitness function uses Integral Absolute Error (IAE) and Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE). These works propose to autotune feedback gain for DDWMR Jetbot, which implements a PI control system with six feedback gains. The methods used to tune the feedback gain are Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Bird Swarm Algorithm (BSA). There are four different scenarios to do the autotune. The autotune result performance shows that those two methods can find an optimal gain to make the robot follow four different continuous trajectories without much trajectory deformation. PSO and BSA can do an autotune PI gain with six variables to minimize the Integral Absolute Error (IAE) and Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE)

    Discrete-Time System Conditional Optimization in the Parameter Space with Nonzero Initial Conditions

    The paper presents a new approach to the design of the classical PD controller for the plant in the closed loop control system. Proposed controller has two unknown adjustable parameters which are designed by the algebraic method in the two dimensional parameter space, by using the newly discovered characteristic polynomial of the row nondegenerate full transfer function matrix. The system relative stability, in regard to the chosen damping coefficient is achieved. The optimality criterion is the minimal value of the performance index and sum of squared error is taken as an objective function. The output error used in the performance index is influenced by all actions on the system at the same time: by nonzero initial conditions and by nonzero inputs. In the classical approach the output error is influenced only by nonzero inputs. Experimental results confirm that by taking into account nonzero initial conditions, an optimal solution is obtained, which is not the case with the classical method where optimization is performed at zero initial conditions

    Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm for Advanced Photovoltaic Systems

    Photovoltaic (PV) systems are the major nonconventional sources for power generation for present power strategy. The power of PV system has rapid increase because of its unpolluted, less noise and limited maintenance. But whole PV system has two main disadvantages drawbacks, that is, the power generation of it is quite low and the output power is nonlinear, which is influenced by climatic conditions, namely environmental temperature and the solar irradiation. The natural limiting factor is that PV potential in respect of temperature and irradiation has nonlinear output behavior. An automated power tracking method, for example, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), is necessarily applied to improve the power generation of PV systems. The MPPT methods undergo serious challenges when the PV system is under partial shade condition because PV shows several peaks in power. Hence, the exploration method might easily be misguided and might trapped to the local maxima. Therefore, a reasonable exploratory method must be constructed, which has to determine the global maxima for PV of shaded partially. The traditional approaches namely constant voltage tracking (CVT), perturb and observe (P&O), hill climbing (HC), Incremental Conductance (INC), and fractional open circuit voltage (FOCV) methods, indeed some of their improved types, are quite incompetent in tracking the global MPP (GMPP). Traditional techniques and soft computing-based bio-inspired and nature-inspired algorithms applied to MPPT were reviewed to explore the possibility for research while optimizing the PV system with global maximum output power under partially shading conditions. This paper is aimed to review, compare, and analyze almost all the techniques that implemented so far. Further this paper provides adequate details about algorithms that focuses to derive improved MPPT under non-uniform irradiation. Each algorithm got merits and demerits of its own with respect to the converging speed, computing time, complexity of coding, hardware suitability, stability and so on

    Development Schemes of Electric Vehicle Charging Protocols and Implementation of Algorithms for Fast Charging under Dynamic Environments Leading towards Grid-to-Vehicle Integration

    This thesis focuses on the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging protocols under a dynamic environment using artificial intelligence (AI), to achieve Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) integration and promote automobile electrification. The proposed framework comprises three major complementary steps. Firstly, the DC fast charging scheme is developed under different ambient conditions such as temperature and relative humidity. Subsequently, the transient performance of the controller is improved while implementing the proposed DC fast charging scheme. Finally, various novel techno-economic scenarios and case studies are proposed to integrate EVs with the utility grid. The proposed novel scheme is composed of hierarchical stages; In the first stage, an investigation of the temperature or/and relative humidity impact on the charging process is implemented using the constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) protocol. Where the relative humidity impact on the charging process was not investigated or mentioned in the literature survey. This was followed by the feedforward backpropagation neural network (FFBP-NN) classification algorithm supported by the statistical analysis of an instant charging current sample of only 10 seconds at any ambient condition. Then the FFBP-NN perfectly estimated the EV’s battery terminal voltage, charging current, and charging interval time with an error of 1% at the corresponding temperature and relative humidity. Then, a nonlinear identification model of the lithium-polymer ion battery dynamic behaviour is introduced based on the Hammerstein-Wiener (HW) model with an experimental error of 1.1876%. Compared with the CC-CV fast charging protocol, intelligent novel techniques based on the multistage charging current protocol (MSCC) are proposed using the Cuckoo optimization algorithm (COA). COA is applied to the Hierarchical technique (HT) and the Conditional random technique (CRT). Compared with the CC-CV charging protocol, an improvement in the charging efficiency of 8% and 14.1% was obtained by the HT and the CRT, respectively, in addition to a reduction in energy losses of 7.783% and 10.408% and a reduction in charging interval time of 18.1% and 22.45%, respectively. The stated charging protocols have been implemented throughout a smart charger. The charger comprises a DC-DC buck converter controlled by an artificial neural network predictive controller (NNPC), trained and supported by the long short-term memory neural network (LSTM). The LSTM network model was utilized in the offline forecasting of the PV output power, which was fed to the NNPC as the training data. The NNPC–LSTM controller was compared with the fuzzy logic (FL) and the conventional PID controllers and perfectly ensured that the optimum transient performance with a minimum battery terminal voltage ripple reached 1 mV with a very high-speed response of 1 ms in reaching the predetermined charging current stages. Finally, to alleviate the power demand pressure of the proposed EV charging framework on the utility grid, a novel smart techno-economic operation of an electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) in Egypt controlled by the aggregator is suggested based on a hierarchical model of multiple scenarios. The deterministic charging scheduling of the EVs is the upper stage of the model to balance the generated and consumed power of the station. Mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) is used to solve the first stage, where the EV charging peak demand value is reduced by 3.31% (4.5 kW). The second challenging stage is to maximize the EVCS profit whilst minimizing the EV charging tariff. In this stage, MILP and Markov Decision Process Reinforcement Learning (MDP-RL) resulted in an increase in EVCS revenue by 28.88% and 20.10%, respectively. Furthermore, the grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies are applied to the stochastic EV parking across the day, controlled by the aggregator to alleviate the utility grid load demand. The aggregator determined the number of EVs that would participate in the electric power trade and sets the charging/discharging capacity level for each EV. The proposed model minimized the battery degradation cost while maximizing the revenue of the EV owner and minimizing the utility grid load demand based on the genetic algorithm (GA). The implemented procedure reduced the degradation cost by an average of 40.9256%, increased the EV SOC by 27%, and ensured an effective grid stabilization service by shaving the load demand to reach a predetermined grid average power across the day where the grid load demand decreased by 26.5% (371 kW)
