    Integrating expert-based objectivist and nonexpert-based subjectivist paradigms in landscape assessment

    This thesis explores the integration of objective and subjective measures of landscape aesthetics, particularly focusing on crowdsourced geo-information. It addresses the increasing importance of considering public perceptions in national landscape governance, in line with the European Landscape Convention's emphasis on public involvement. Despite this, national landscape assessments often remain expert-centric and top-down, facing challenges in resource constraints and limited public engagement. The thesis leverages Web 2.0 technologies and crowdsourced geographic information, examining correlations between expert-based metrics of landscape quality and public perceptions. The Scenic-Or-Not initiative for Great Britain, GIS-based Wildness spatial layers, and LANDMAP dataset for Wales serve as key datasets for analysis. The research investigates the relationships between objective measures of landscape wildness quality and subjective measures of aesthetics. Multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) reveals significant correlations, with different wildness components exhibiting varying degrees of association. The study suggests the feasibility of incorporating wildness and scenicness measures into formal landscape aesthetic assessments. Comparing expert and public perceptions, the research identifies preferences for water-related landforms and variations in upland and lowland typologies. The study emphasizes the agreement between experts and non-experts on extreme scenic perceptions but notes discrepancies in mid-spectrum landscapes. To overcome limitations in systematic landscape evaluations, an integrative approach is proposed. Utilizing XGBoost models, the research predicts spatial patterns of landscape aesthetics across Great Britain, based on the Scenic-Or-Not initiatives, Wildness spatial layers, and LANDMAP data. The models achieve comparable accuracy to traditional statistical models, offering insights for Landscape Character Assessment practices and policy decisions. While acknowledging data limitations and biases in crowdsourcing, the thesis discusses the necessity of an aggregation strategy to manage computational challenges. Methodological considerations include addressing the modifiable areal unit problem (MAUP) associated with aggregating point-based observations. The thesis comprises three studies published or submitted for publication, each contributing to the understanding of the relationship between objective and subjective measures of landscape aesthetics. The concluding chapter discusses the limitations of data and methods, providing a comprehensive overview of the research

    Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion. Collected Works, Volume 5

    This fifth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different fields of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered. First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modified Proportional Conflict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classifiers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes. Because more applications of DSmT have emerged in the past years since the apparition of the fourth book of DSmT in 2015, the second part of this volume is about selected applications of DSmT mainly in building change detection, object recognition, quality of data association in tracking, perception in robotics, risk assessment for torrent protection and multi-criteria decision-making, multi-modal image fusion, coarsening techniques, recommender system, levee characterization and assessment, human heading perception, trust assessment, robotics, biometrics, failure detection, GPS systems, inter-criteria analysis, group decision, human activity recognition, storm prediction, data association for autonomous vehicles, identification of maritime vessels, fusion of support vector machines (SVM), Silx-Furtif RUST code library for information fusion including PCR rules, and network for ship classification. Finally, the third part presents interesting contributions related to belief functions in general published or presented along the years since 2015.     Moving usable security research out of the lab: evaluating the use of VR studies for real-world authentication research

    Empirical evaluations of real-world research artefacts that derive results from observations and experiments are a core aspect of usable security research. Expert interviews as part of this thesis revealed that the costs associated with developing and maintaining physical research artefacts often amplify human-centred usability and security research challenges. On top of that, ethical and legal barriers often make usability and security research in the field infeasible. Researchers have begun simulating real-life conditions in the lab to contribute to ecological validity. However, studies of this type are still restricted to what can be replicated in physical laboratory settings. Furthermore, historically, user study subjects were mainly recruited from local areas only when evaluating hardware prototypes. The human-centred research communities have recognised and partially addressed these challenges using online studies such as surveys that allow for the recruitment of large and diverse samples as well as learning about user behaviour. However, human-centred security research involving hardware prototypes is often concerned with human factors and their impact on the prototypes’ usability and security, which cannot be studied using traditional online surveys. To work towards addressing the current challenges and facilitating research in this space, this thesis explores if – and how – virtual reality (VR) studies can be used for real-world usability and security research. It first validates the feasibility and then demonstrates the use of VR studies for human-centred usability and security research through six empirical studies, including remote and lab VR studies as well as video prototypes as part of online surveys. It was found that VR-based usability and security evaluations of authentication prototypes, where users provide touch, mid-air, and eye-gaze input, greatly match the findings from the original real-world evaluations. This thesis further investigated the effectiveness of VR studies by exploring three core topics in the authentication domain: First, the challenges around in-the-wild shoulder surfing studies were addressed. Two novel VR shoulder surfing methods were implemented to contribute towards realistic shoulder surfing research and explore the use of VR studies for security evaluations. This was found to allow researchers to provide a bridge over the methodological gap between lab and field studies. Second, the ethical and legal barriers when conducting in situ usability research on authentication systems were addressed. It was found that VR studies can represent plausible authentication environments and that a prototype’s in situ usability evaluation results deviate from traditional lab evaluations. Finally, this thesis contributes a novel evaluation method to remotely study interactive VR replicas of real-world prototypes, allowing researchers to move experiments that involve hardware prototypes out of physical laboratories and potentially increase a sample’s diversity and size. The thesis concludes by discussing the implications of using VR studies for prototype usability and security evaluations. It lays the foundation for establishing VR studies as a powerful, well-evaluated research method and unfolds its methodological advantages and disadvantages

    Agency and professionalism in translation and interpreting: navigating conflicting role identities among translation and interpreting practitioners working for local government in Japan

    This thesis investigates the ethical choices of Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs), a group of largely non-professional translators and interpreters working for local government bodies in Japan. In addition to T&I, CIRs are tasked with engaging in intercultural relations, “internationalising” their local areas, and working with the public as members of the civil service. The thesis examines the different roles and particular circumstances of CIRs to describe and explain how they make ethical decisions in T&I. This was explored using an ethnographic methodology featuring both traditional and online sites. Specifically, data was collected from participant observation of an internet forum created by CIRs, through online surveys, and also by employing focus groups and interviews held with CIRs in Japan. Analysis of forum and survey data illuminated the ethical struggles experienced by CIRs in T&I. It indicated that professionalism and agency were of particular concern for these CIRs when dealing with questions of ethics. Through focus groups, more detailed data was elicited surrounding the ethical struggles faced by CIRs, with a particular focus on professionalism and agency. Forum and focus group data combined to create a set of hypothetical ethical scenarios discussed during semistructured interviews held to understand factors that influence CIR decision making. A theoretical framework combining Agency Theory (Mitnick, 1975) and Role Identity Theory (Stryker, 1968) was used to describe and explain CIR ethical decision making; foregrounding their potential to effect change in their workplaces (agency) and the prioritisation afforded to different roles with which they identify in their work (role identity). Ultimately, CIRs were most disposed to translate or interpret in a manner that they believed was in keeping with the wishes of their employers, based on their superior ability to monitor and control the CIRs. However, in instances where the CIR operated with free will, their choices were a result of complex structuring of the various identities that they had normalised within themselves.     Perceptual Model-Driven Authoring of Plausible Vibrations from User Expectations for Virtual Environments

    One of the central goals of design is the creation of experiences that are rated favorably in the intended application context. User expectations play an integral role in tactile product quality and tactile plausibility judgments alike. In the vibrotactile authoring process for virtual environments, vibra-tion is created to match the user’s expectations of the presented situational context. Currently, inefficient trial and error approaches attempt to match expectations implicitly. A more efficient, model-driven procedure based explicitly on tactile user expectations would thus be beneficial for author-ing vibrations. In everyday life, we are frequently exposed to various whole-body vibrations. Depending on their temporal and spectral proper-ties we intuitively associate specific perceptual properties such as “tin-gling”. This suggests a systematic relationship between physical parame-ters and perceptual properties. To communicate with potential users about such elicited or expected tactile properties, a standardized design language is proposed. It contains a set of sensory tactile perceptual attributes, which are sufficient to characterize the perceptual space of vibration encountered in everyday life. This design language enables the assessment of quantita-tive tactile perceptual specifications by laypersons that are elicited in situational contexts such as auditory-visual-tactile vehicle scenes. Howev-er, such specifications can also be assessed by providing only verbal de-scriptions of the content of these scenes. Quasi identical ratings observed for both presentation modes suggest that tactile user expectations can be quantified even before any vibration is presented. Such expected perceptu-al specifications are the prerequisite for a subsequent translation into phys-ical vibration parameters. Plausibility can be understood as a similarity judgment between elicited features and expected features. Thus, plausible vibration can be synthesized by maximizing the similarity of the elicited perceptual properties to the expected perceptual properties. Based on the observed relationships between vibration parameters and sensory tactile perceptual attributes, a 1-nearest-neighbor model and a regression model were built. The plausibility of the vibrations synthesized by these models in the context of virtual auditory-visual-tactile vehicle scenes was validat-ed in a perceptual study. The results demonstrated that the perceptual spec-ifications obtained with the design language are sufficient to synthesize vibrations, which are perceived as equally plausible as recorded vibrations in a given situational context. Overall, the demonstrated design method can be a new, more efficient tool for designers authoring vibrations for virtual environments or creating tactile feedback. Gegenwärtig versucht man im vibrotaktilen Authoring-Prozess mit ineffizienten Trial-and-Error-Verfahren, die Erwartungen an den dargestellten, virtuellen Situationskontext implizit zu erfüllen. Ein effizienteres, modellgetriebenes Verfahren, das explizit auf den taktilen Benutzererwartungen basiert, wäre daher von Vorteil. Im Alltag sind wir häufig verschiedenen Ganzkörper-schwingungen ausgesetzt. Abhängig von ihren zeitlichen und spektralen Eigenschaften assoziieren wir intuitiv bestimmte Wahrnehmungsmerkmale wie z.B. “kribbeln”. Dies legt eine systematische Beziehung zwischen physikalischen Parametern und Wahrnehmungsmerkmalen nahe. Um mit potentiellen Nutzern über hervorgerufene oder erwartete taktile Eigen-schaften zu kommunizieren, wird eine standardisierte Designsprache vor-geschlagen. Sie enthält eine Menge von sensorisch-taktilen Wahrneh-mungsmerkmalen, die hinreichend den Wahrnehmungsraum der im Alltag auftretenden Vibrationen charakterisieren. Diese Entwurfssprache ermög-licht die quantitative Beurteilung taktiler Wahrnehmungsmerkmale, die in Situationskontexten wie z.B. auditiv-visuell-taktilen Fahrzeugszenen her-vorgerufen werden. Solche Wahrnehmungsspezifikationen können jedoch auch bewertet werden, indem der Inhalt dieser Szenen verbal beschrieben wird. Quasi identische Bewertungen für beide Präsentationsmodi deuten darauf hin, dass die taktilen Benutzererwartungen quantifiziert werden können, noch bevor eine Vibration präsentiert wird. Die erwarteten Wahr-nehmungsspezifikationen sind die Voraussetzung für eine anschließende Übersetzung in physikalische Schwingungsparameter. Plausible Vibratio-nen können synthetisiert werden, indem die erwarteten Wahrnehmungs-merkmale hervorgerufen werden. Auf der Grundlage der beobachteten Beziehungen zwischen Schwingungs¬parametern und sensorisch-taktilen Wahrnehmungsmerkmalen wurden ein 1-Nearest-Neighbor-Modell und ein Regressionsmodell erstellt. Die Plausibilität der von diesen Modellen synthetisierten Schwingungen im Kontext virtueller, auditorisch-visuell-taktiler Fahrzeugszenen wurde in einer Wahrnehmungsstudie validiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigten, dass die mit der Designsprache gewonnenen Wahr-nehmungsspezifikationen ausreichen, um Schwingungen zu synthetisieren, die in einem gegebenen Situationskontext als ebenso plausibel empfunden werden wie aufgezeichnete Schwingungen.     Language variation, automatic speech recognition and algorithmic bias

    In this thesis, I situate the impacts of automatic speech recognition systems in relation to sociolinguistic theory (in particular drawing on concepts of language variation, language ideology and language policy) and contemporary debates in AI ethics (especially regarding algorithmic bias and fairness). In recent years, automatic speech recognition systems, alongside other language technologies, have been adopted by a growing number of users and have been embedded in an increasing number of algorithmic systems. This expansion into new application domains and language varieties can be understood as an expansion into new sociolinguistic contexts. In this thesis, I am interested in how automatic speech recognition tools interact with this sociolinguistic context, and how they affect speakers, speech communities and their language varieties. Focussing on commercial automatic speech recognition systems for British Englishes, I first explore the extent and consequences of performance differences of these systems for different user groups depending on their linguistic background. When situating this predictive bias within the wider sociolinguistic context, it becomes apparent that these systems reproduce and potentially entrench existing linguistic discrimination and could therefore cause direct and indirect harms to already marginalised speaker groups. To understand the benefits and potentials of automatic transcription tools, I highlight two case studies: transcribing sociolinguistic data in English and transcribing personal voice messages in isiXhosa. The central role of the sociolinguistic context in developing these tools is emphasised in this comparison. Design choices, such as the choice of training data, are particularly consequential because they interact with existing processes of language standardisation. To understand the impacts of these choices, and the role of the developers making them better, I draw on theory from language policy research and critical data studies. These conceptual frameworks are intended to help practitioners and researchers in anticipating and mitigating predictive bias and other potential harms of speech technologies. Beyond looking at individual choices, I also investigate the discourses about language variation and linguistic diversity deployed in the context of language technologies. These discourses put forward by researchers, developers and commercial providers not only have a direct effect on the wider sociolinguistic context, but they also highlight how this context (e.g., existing beliefs about language(s)) affects technology development. Finally, I explore ways of building better automatic speech recognition tools, focussing in particular on well-documented, naturalistic and diverse benchmark datasets. However, inclusive datasets are not necessarily a panacea, as they still raise important questions about the nature of linguistic data and language variation (especially in relation to identity), and may not mitigate or prevent all potential harms of automatic speech recognition systems as embedded in larger algorithmic systems and sociolinguistic contexts

    Judgment Sieve: Reducing Uncertainty in Group Judgments through Interventions Targeting Ambiguity versus Disagreement

    When groups of people are tasked with making a judgment, the issue of uncertainty often arises. Existing methods to reduce uncertainty typically focus on iteratively improving specificity in the overall task instruction. However, uncertainty can arise from multiple sources, such as ambiguity of the item being judged due to limited context, or disagreements among the participants due to different perspectives and an under-specified task. A one-size-fits-all intervention may be ineffective if it is not targeted to the right source of uncertainty. In this paper we introduce a new workflow, Judgment Sieve, to reduce uncertainty in tasks involving group judgment in a targeted manner. By utilizing measurements that separate different sources of uncertainty during an initial round of judgment elicitation, we can then select a targeted intervention adding context or deliberation to most effectively reduce uncertainty on each item being judged. We test our approach on two tasks: rating word pair similarity and toxicity of online comments, showing that targeted interventions reduced uncertainty for the most uncertain cases. In the top 10% of cases, we saw an ambiguity reduction of 21.4% and 25.7%, and a disagreement reduction of 22.2% and 11.2% for the two tasks respectively. We also found through a simulation that our targeted approach reduced the average uncertainty scores for both sources of uncertainty as opposed to uniform approaches where reductions in average uncertainty from one source came with an increase for the other
