Intelligent evacuation management systems: A review
Crowd and evacuation management have been active areas of research and study in the recent past. Various developments continue to take place in the process of efficient evacuation of crowds in mass gatherings. This article is intended to provide a review of intelligent evacuation management systems covering the aspects of crowd monitoring, crowd disaster prediction, evacuation modelling, and evacuation path guidelines. Soft computing approaches play a vital role in the design and deployment of intelligent evacuation applications pertaining to crowd control management. While the review deals with video and nonvideo based aspects of crowd monitoring and crowd disaster prediction, evacuation techniques are reviewed via the theme of soft computing, along with a brief review on the evacuation navigation path. We believe that this review will assist researchers in developing reliable automated evacuation systems that will help in ensuring the safety of the evacuees especially during emergency evacuation scenarios
Effective crowd anomaly detection through spatio-temporal texture analysis
Abnormal crowd behaviors in high density situations can pose great danger to public safety. Despite the extensive installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, it is still difficult to achieve real-time alerts and automated responses from current systems. Two major breakthroughs have been reported in this research. Firstly, a spatial-temporal texture extraction algorithm is developed. This algorithm is able to effectively extract video textures with abundant crowd motion details. It is through adopting Gabor-filtered textures with the highest information entropy values. Secondly, a novel scheme for defining crowd motion patterns (signatures) is devised to identify abnormal behaviors in the crowd by employing an enhanced gray level co-occurrence matrix model. In the experiments, various classic classifiers are utilized to benchmark the performance of the proposed method. The results obtained exhibit detection and accuracy rates which are, overall, superior to other techniques
Reactive and Proactive Anomaly Detection in Crowd Management Using Hierarchical Temporal Memory
An effective crowd management system offers immediate reactive or proactive handling of potential hot spots, including overcrowded situations and suspicious movements, which mitigate or avoids severe incidents and fatalities. The crowd management domain generates spatial and temporal resolution that demands diverse sophisticated mechanisms to measure, extract and process the data to produce a meaningful abstraction. Crowd management includes modelling the movements of a crowd to project effective mechanisms that support quick emersion from a dangerous and fatal situation. Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, machine learning techniques and communication methods can be used to sense the crowd characteristic /density and offer early detection of such events or even better prediction of potential accidents to inform the management authorities. Different machine learning methods have been applied for crowd management; however, the rapid advancement in deep hierarchical models that learns from a continuous stream of data has not been fully investigated in this context. For example, Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM) has shown powerful capabilities for application domains that require online learning and modelling temporal information. This paper proposes a new HTM-based framework for anomaly detection in a crowd management system. The proposed framework offers two functions: (1) reactive detection of crowd anomalies and (2) proactive detection of anomalies by predicting potential anomalies before taking place. The empirical evaluation proves that HTM achieved 94.22%, which outperforms k-Nearest Neighbor Global Anomaly Score (kNN-GAS) by 18.12%, Independent Component Analysis-Local Outlier Probability (ICA-LoOP) by 18.17%, and Singular Value Decomposition Influence Outlier (SVD-IO) by 18.12%, in crowd multiple anomaly detection. Moreover, it demonstrates the ability of the proposed alerting framework in predicting potential crowd anomalies. For this purpose, a simulated crowd dataset was created using MassMotion crowd simulation tool
Role of opinion sharing on the emergency evacuation dynamics
Emergency evacuation is a critical research topic and any improvement to the existing evacuation models will help in improving the safety of the evacuees. Currently, there are evacuation models that have either an accurate movement model or a sophisticated decision model. Individuals in a crowd tend to share and propagate their opinion. This opinion sharing part is either implicitly modeled or entirely overlooked in most of the existing models. Thus, one of the overarching goal of this research is to the study the effect of opinion evolution through an evacuating crowd. First, the opinion evolution in a crowd was modeled mathematically. Next, the results from the analytical model were validated with a simulation model having a simple motion model. To improve the fidelity of the evacuation model, a more realistic movement and decision model were incorporated and the effect of opinion sharing on the evacuation dynamics was studied extensively. Further, individuals with strong inclination towards particular route were introduced and their effect on overall efficiency was studied. Current evacuation guidance algorithms focuses on efficient crowd evacuation. The method of guidance delivery is generally overlooked. This important gap in guidance delivery is addressed next. Additionally, a virtual reality based immersive experiment is designed to study factors affecting individuals\u27 decision making during emergency evacuation
DESIGN FRAMEWORK FOR INTERNET OF THINGS BASED NEXT GENERATION VIDEO SURVEILLANCE
Modern artificial intelligence and machine learning opens up new era towards video
surveillance system. Next generation video surveillance in Internet of Things (IoT) environment is
an emerging research area because of high bandwidth, big-data generation, resource constraint
video surveillance node, high energy consumption for real time applications. In this thesis, various
opportunities and functional requirements that next generation video surveillance system should
achieve with the power of video analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning are
discussed. This thesis also proposes a new video surveillance system architecture introducing fog
computing towards IoT based system and contributes the facilities and benefits of proposed system
which can meet the forthcoming requirements of surveillance. Different challenges and issues
faced for video surveillance in IoT environment and evaluate fog-cloud integrated architecture to
penetrate and eliminate those issues.
The focus of this thesis is to evaluate the IoT based video surveillance system. To this end,
two case studies were performed to penetrate values towards energy and bandwidth efficient video
surveillance system. In one case study, an IoT-based power efficient color frame transmission and
generation algorithm for video surveillance application is presented. The conventional way is to
transmit all R, G and B components of all frames. Using proposed technique, instead of sending
all components, first one color frame is sent followed by a series of gray-scale frames. After a
certain number of gray-scale frames, another color frame is sent followed by the same number of
gray-scale frames. This process is repeated for video surveillance system. In the decoder, color
information is formulated from the color frame and then used to colorize the gray-scale frames. In
another case study, a bandwidth efficient and low complexity frame reproduction technique that is
also applicable in IoT based video surveillance application is presented. Using the second
technique, only the pixel intensity that differs heavily comparing to previous frame’s
corresponding pixel is sent. If the pixel intensity is similar or near similar comparing to the
previous frame, the information is not transferred. With this objective, the bit stream is created for
every frame with a predefined protocol. In cloud side, the frame information can be reproduced by
implementing the reverse protocol from the bit stream.
Experimental results of the two case studies show that the IoT-based proposed approach
gives better results than traditional techniques in terms of both energy efficiency and quality of the video, and therefore, can enable sensor nodes in IoT to perform more operations with energy
