Temporal Cross-Media Retrieval with Soft-Smoothing
Multimedia information have strong temporal correlations that shape the way
modalities co-occur over time. In this paper we study the dynamic nature of
multimedia and social-media information, where the temporal dimension emerges
as a strong source of evidence for learning the temporal correlations across
visual and textual modalities. So far, cross-media retrieval models, explored
the correlations between different modalities (e.g. text and image) to learn a
common subspace, in which semantically similar instances lie in the same
neighbourhood. Building on such knowledge, we propose a novel temporal
cross-media neural architecture, that departs from standard cross-media
methods, by explicitly accounting for the temporal dimension through temporal
subspace learning. The model is softly-constrained with temporal and
inter-modality constraints that guide the new subspace learning task by
favouring temporal correlations between semantically similar and temporally
close instances. Experiments on three distinct datasets show that accounting
for time turns out to be important for cross-media retrieval. Namely, the
proposed method outperforms a set of baselines on the task of temporal
cross-media retrieval, demonstrating its effectiveness for performing temporal

Reinforced Video Captioning with Entailment Rewards
Sequence-to-sequence models have shown promising improvements on the temporal
task of video captioning, but they optimize word-level cross-entropy loss
during training. First, using policy gradient and mixed-loss methods for
reinforcement learning, we directly optimize sentence-level task-based metrics
(as rewards), achieving significant improvements over the baseline, based on
both automatic metrics and human evaluation on multiple datasets. Next, we
propose a novel entailment-enhanced reward (CIDEnt) that corrects
phrase-matching based metrics (such as CIDEr) to only allow for
logically-implied partial matches and avoid contradictions, achieving further
significant improvements over the CIDEr-reward model. Overall, our
CIDEnt-reward model achieves the new state-of-the-art on the MSR-VTT dataset.Comment: EMNLP 2017 (9 pages
Query Expansion with Locally-Trained Word Embeddings
Continuous space word embeddings have received a great deal of attention in
the natural language processing and machine learning communities for their
ability to model term similarity and other relationships. We study the use of
term relatedness in the context of query expansion for ad hoc information
retrieval. We demonstrate that word embeddings such as word2vec and GloVe, when
trained globally, underperform corpus and query specific embeddings for
retrieval tasks. These results suggest that other tasks benefiting from global
embeddings may also benefit from local embeddings
