    Technology-Enhanced Learning Environments and Adaptive Learning Systems – Development of Functionality Taxonomies

    Especially against the background of the current coronavirus crisis, technology-enhanced learning environments (TELEs) increasingly characterize teaching at universities. For the successful use and integration of TELEs, it is important to understand the functionalities of the technologies used. Based on the state of the art and following [1], we develop two taxonomies. The first taxonomy depicts eleven functionalities with different dimensions relevant for successfully designing TELEs. Sound knowledge of the functionalities supports research on adaptive learning within TELEs and the implementation of student-centered learning opportunities, which is structured in a second functionality taxonomy for adaptive learning systems (ALSs). We contribute to current research on TELEs and ALSs by providing a structured overview of functionalities and suggestions for further research with our research opportunities

    Blackboard Learn is one of the learning management systems (LMSs), which is used in teaching to manage user learning interventions and assist in the planning, distribution and evaluation of a specific learning process. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the functionalities of Blackboard Learn were used in online courses and how students perceived the benefits of using them. Also, the study was to investigate how students’ perceptions of teaching, cognitive and social presences within the Community of Inquiry and perceived benefits of using Blackboard Learn were related to their learning efforts. The results revealed that students who consider Blackboard tools more beneficial on their learning are most likely to have higher perceptions of teaching presence. Moreover, students’ learning efforts were increased primarily by students’ perceptions on perceived benefits of using Blackboard and secondarily by students’ perceptions of social presences. In conclusion, utilising LMS tools effectively in online courses can benefit students’ course work and would motivate them to put more efforts on their learning

    Intelligent Mobile Learning Interaction System (IMLIS): A Personalized Learning System for People with Mental Disabilities

    The domain of learning context for people with special needs is a big challenge for digi- tal media in education. This thesis describes the main ideas and the architecture of a system called Intelligent Mobile Learning Interaction System (IMLIS) that provides a mobile learning environment for people with mental disabilities. The design of IMLIS aims to enhance personalization aspects by using a decision engine, which makes deci- sions based on the user s abilities, learning history and reactions to processes. It allows for adaptation, adjustment and personalization of content, learning activities, and the user interface on different levels in a context where learners and teachers are targeting autonomous learning by personalized lessons and feedback. Due to IMLIS dynamic structure and flexible patterns, it is able to meet the specific needs of individuals and to engage them in learning activities with new learning motivations. In addition to support- ing learning material and educational aspects, mobile learning fosters learning across context and provides more social communication and collaboration for its users. The suggested methodology defines a comprehensive learning process for the mentally disabled to support them in formal and informal learning. We apply knowledge from the field of research and practice to people with mental disabilities, as well as discuss the pedagogical and didactical aspects of the design

    A qualitative analysis of the impact of cultural inertia on studynet/canvas use in teaching and learning at a post-92 university

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.Since this line of inquiry is underrepresented in the literature on technology adoption, this study investigates the effect of inertia on technology usage and acceptance in Higher Education institutions. Inertia is described in this study as students' and academics' unwillingness to accept new technology as a teaching and learning resource. The paper considers the benefits and drawbacks of using technology, especially studynet/canvas and its effect on teaching and learning, as well as why some people embrace technology more slowly than others. The researcher used open-ended questions to assess the views of UH academics and students on a variety of topics, including self-efficacy, for example, self-confidence and self-belief in one's ability to master new technology; compatibility; instructor effectiveness; and facilitating conditions; and then analysed their overall influence on teaching and learning, especially in relation to technology use, adoption and acceptance in HEIs. The researcher discovered that users have a high level of self-efficacy, and compatibility has also been suggested to play a significant role in user adoption of the platform. Our findings indicate that inertia, such as self-efficacy, compatibility, instructor effectiveness, and facilitating conditions, influence studynet/canvas use. Based on researcher’s results, it is certain that capacity building, connectivity, technology update, and adaptation are the most important aspects of inertia affecting academics and students' use of studynet/canvas. This paper adds to organisational theories by elucidating the main factors influencing the slow adoption and use of new technology, such as studynet/canvas and its impact on staff and students’ success. It offers guidance to HEI management and technologists on the main factors preventing increased use of the studynet/canvas platform as a teaching and learning resource. The study also considers the long-term effects of these factors on universities, especially those founded after 1992.Peer reviewe

    Virtual Learning Environments\u27 Impact on Adult Learners\u27 Motivation in the Workplace

    Virtual learning environments have become prevalent in the workplace to improve talent development. However, because there are so many different types of design options, not all learners are finding success in the virtual learning environment. This mismatch can negatively impact employees\u27 motivation and learning outcomes. The purpose of this study was to explore how design features of a virtual learning environment impacted adult learners\u27 motivation in the workplace. Constructivist and self-determination theories were used as theoretical frameworks. The research question in this study explored how social and external contextual factors influence an adult learner\u27s motivation to learn in a virtual learning environment. A qualitative case study was used to explore the data collected from 8 federal employees who used a virtual learning environment for professional development. Data were collected from interviews, surveys, and direct observations and analyzed using inductive coding to determined patterns and themes for study. The results from the study indicated the participants viewed visual learning, learner control, ease of use, technical competence, instructor support, and technical support as critical factors that must be addressed when using a virtual learning environment to improve talent development. The findings from the study can provide insights that could be used by training developers for how to design virtual learning environments to provide a positive environment. The social change impact will be to improve the virtual learning environments for the federal workforce to improve motivation and create a culture of talent development for individual growth and organizational capabilities
