(2007), Simulation of flows with violent free surface motion and moving objects using unstructured grids. Int. J. Numer. Meth. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Self-Archiving.A volume of fluid (VOF) technique has been developed and coupled with an incompressible Euler/Navier–Stokes solver operating on adaptive, unstructured grids to simulate the interactions of extreme waves and three-dimensional structures. The present implementation follows the classic VOF implementation for the liquid–gas system, considering only the liquid phase. Extrapolation algorithms are used to obtain velocities and pressure in the gas region near the free surface. The VOF technique is validated against the classic dam-break problem, as well as series of 2D sloshing experiments and results from SPH calculations. These and a series of other examples demonstrate that the ability of the present approach to simulate violent free surface flows with strong nonlinear behaviour.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Numerical Structure Analysis of Regular Hydrogen-Oxygen Detonations

Large-scale numerical simulations have been carried out to analyze the internal wave structure of a regular oscillating low-pressure H2 : O2 : Ar-Chapman-Jouguet detonation in two and three space-dimensions. The chemical reaction is modeled with a non-equilibrium mechanism that consists of 34 elementary reactions and uses nine thermally perfect gaseous species. A high local resolution is achieved dynamically at run-time by employing a block-oriented adaptive finite volume method that has been parallelized efficiently for massively parallel machines. Based on a highly resolved two-dimensional simulation we analyze the temporal development of the ow field around a triple point during a detonation cell in great detail. In particular, the influence of the reinitiation phase at the beginning of a detonation cell is discussed. Further on, a successful simulation of the cellular structure in three space-dimensions for the same configuration is presented. The calculation reproduces the experimentally observed three-dimensional mode of propagation called "rectangular-mode-in-phase" with zero phase shift between the transverse waves in both space-directions perpendicular to the detonation front and shows the same oscillation period as the two-dimensional case

Accuracy, Scalability, and Efficiency of Mixed-Element USM3D for Benchmark Three-Dimensional Flows

    Get PDF
The unstructured, mixed-element, cell-centered, finite-volume flow solver USM3D is enhanced with new capabilities including parallelization, line generation for general unstructured grids, improved discretization scheme, and optimized iterative solver. The paper reports on the new developments to the flow solver and assesses the accuracy, scalability, and efficiency. The USM3D assessments are conducted using a baseline method and the recent hierarchical adaptive nonlinear iteration method framework. Two benchmark turbulent flows, namely, a subsonic separated flow around a three-dimensional hemisphere-cylinder configuration and a transonic flow around the ONERA M6 wing are considered

State of the Art in the Optimisation of Wind Turbine Performance Using CFD

    Get PDF
Wind energy has received increasing attention in recent years due to its sustainability and geographically wide availability. The efficiency of wind energy utilisation highly depends on the performance of wind turbines, which convert the kinetic energy in wind into electrical energy. In order to optimise wind turbine performance and reduce the cost of next-generation wind turbines, it is crucial to have a view of the state of the art in the key aspects on the performance optimisation of wind turbines using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which has attracted enormous interest in the development of next-generation wind turbines in recent years. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art progress on optimisation of wind turbine performance using CFD, reviewing the objective functions to judge the performance of wind turbine, CFD approaches applied in the simulation of wind turbines and optimisation algorithms for wind turbine performance. This paper has been written for both researchers new to this research area by summarising underlying theory whilst presenting a comprehensive review on the up-to-date studies, and experts in the field of study by collecting a comprehensive list of related references where the details of computational methods that have been employed lately can be obtained
