Creative User-Centered Visualization Design for Energy Analysts and Modelers
We enhance a user-centered design process with techniques that deliberately promote creativity to identify opportunities for the visualization of data generated by a major energy supplier. Visualization prototypes developed in this way prove effective in a situation whereby data sets are largely unknown and requirements open – enabling successful exploration of possibilities for visualization in Smart Home data analysis. The process gives rise to novel designs and design metaphors including data sculpting. It suggests: that the deliberate use of creativity techniques with data stakeholders is likely to contribute to successful, novel and effective solutions; that being explicit about creativity may contribute to designers developing creative solutions; that using creativity techniques early in the design process may result in a creative approach persisting throughout the process. The work constitutes the first systematic visualization design for a data rich source that will be increasingly important to energy suppliers and consumers as Smart Meter technology is widely deployed. It is novel in explicitly employing creativity techniques at the requirements stage of visualization design and development, paving the way for further use and study of creativity methods in visualization design
Data-First Visualization Design Studies
We introduce the notion of a data-first design study which is triggered by
the acquisition of real-world data instead of specific stakeholder analysis
questions. We propose an adaptation of the design study methodology framework
to provide practical guidance and to aid transferability to other data-first
design processes. We discuss opportunities and risks by reflecting on two of
our own data-first design studies. We review 64 previous design studies and
identify 16 of them as edge cases with characteristics that may indicate a
data-first design process in action

Dynamic Design Documents for supporting applied visualization
A common characteristic of applied visualization is collaboration between visualization researcher and domain expert – where the vi- sualization researcher attempts to assimilate sufficient detail around data, task and requirements to design a visualization tool that is manifestly useful. We report on a method for enabling such a col- laboration that can be used throughout the design process to gather and develop requirements and continually evaluate and support iter- ative design. We do so using highly interactive web-pages that we term dynamic design documents. Applied during a four-year visual data analysis project for crime research, these documents enabled a series of data mappings to be explored by our collaborators (crime analysts) remotely – in a flexible and continuous way. We argue that they engendered a level of engagement that is qualitatively dis- tinct from more traditional methods of feedback elicitation, offered a solution to limited and intermittent contact between analyst and visualization researcher and speculate that they provided a means of partially addressing certain intractable deficiencies, such as so- cial desirability-bias, that are common to evaluation in applied data visualization

Using Information Visualization to Support Creativity in Service Design Workshops
In this paper we outline ongoing PhD research in which we are exploring how information visualization can be used to make quantitative data more accessible and engaging to key stakeholder representatives during service design workshops. We also outline how such visualizations could be used in conjunction with applied creativity techniques to identify ideas for design requirements that are both novel and appropriate, and therefore considered creative. We illustrate this research with details of a workshop held with customers and staff of E.ON Energy in which the objective was to design new services that utilise the data generated by smart energy meters
A Framework for Creative Visualization-Opportunities Workshops
Applied visualization researchers often work closely with domain collaborators to explore new and useful applications of visualization. The early stages of collaborations are typically time consuming for all stakeholders as researchers piece together an understanding of domain challenges from disparate discussions and meetings. A number of recent projects, however, report on the use of creative visualization-opportunities (CVO) workshops to accelerate the early stages of applied work, eliciting a wealth of requirements in a few days of focused work. Yet, there is no established guidance for how to use such workshops effectively. In this paper, we present the results of two-year collaboration in which we analyzed the use of 17 workshops in 10 visualization contexts. Its primary contribution is a framework for CVO workshops that 1) identifies a process model for using workshops; 2) describes a structure of what happens within effective workshops; 3) recommends 25 actionable guidelines for future workshops; and 4) presents an example workshop and workshop methods. The creation of this framework exemplifies the use of critical reflection to learn about visualization in practice from diverse studies and experience
Design activity framework for visualization design
pre-printAn important aspect in visualization design is the connection between what a designer does and the decisions the designer makes. Existing design process models, however, do not explicitly link back to models for visualization design decisions. We bridge this gap by introducing the design activity framework, a process model that explicitly connects to the nested model, a well-known visualization design decision model. The framework includes four overlapping activities that characterize the design process, with each activity explicating outcomes related to the nested model. Additionally, we describe and characterize a list of exemplar methods and how they overlap among these activities. The design activity framework is the result of reflective discussions from a collaboration on a visualization redesign project, the details of which we describe to ground the framework in a real-world design process. Lastly, from this redesign project we provide several research outcomes in the domain of cybersecurity, including an extended data abstraction and rich opportunities for future visualization research

Visualisation for household energy analysis: techniques for exploring multiple variables across scale and geography
The visualisation of large volumes of data can provide rich and meaningful representations that enable users to gain insights quickly and efficiently. Household energy consumer characteristics are explored in this thesis using innovative interactive visualisation techniques. Initial research with energy analysts, from a major UK utility company, investigates visual possibilities and opportunities for future (smart home) energy analytics and explicitly uses creativity techniques for information visualisation requirements gathering. The results, along with exploratory visual analysis combining geodemographic groups and energy consumption, identifes a need for profiling consumers by typical traits. While energy consumption has been a popular topic of research in recent years, there is still limited understanding of the relationship between energy consumption and measurable characteristics of the general population. An investigation of the process of creating an energy-based geodemographic classification led to the proposal and design of a new theoretical framework for visually comparing multivariate data across scale and geography; a necessary step when selecting reliable variables for running clustering algorithms, such as during the geodemographic classification creation process.
The framework for including geography and scale in multivariate comparison forms the major contribution of this thesis. This framework is demonstrated and justified through the building of an interactive visualisation prototype, using input variables deemed relevant for consideration for energy-based geodemographic classification. Important transitions in the framework are highlighted in the proposed design, which uses both statistical and spatial representations. The utility of the framework is validated in the context of energy-based geodemographic variable selection where the multivariate geography of the UK is explored. The sensitivities of varying scale and geography { through varying resolution, extent and the calculation of locally weighted summary statistics { are investigated in context and are shown to be important elements to consider during the variable selection process. The broader applicability of the framework is demonstrated through two further scenarios where multivariate visualisation across scale and geography is shown to be important. The research provides a framework and viable solutions through which geographical visual parameter space analysis (gvPSA) can be undertaken. It uses a design science approach that results in a series of artifacts that open up new visualisation possibilities. This project covers a wide topic where the breadth of research options is extensive and many possibilities for continued research are identified
