    What is an Analogue for the Semantic Web and Why is Having One Important?

    This paper postulates that for the Semantic Web to grow and gain input from fields that will surely benefit it, it needs to develop an analogue that will help people not only understand what it is, but what the potential opportunities are that are enabled by these new protocols. The model proposed in the paper takes the way that Web interaction has been framed as a baseline to inform a similar analogue for the Semantic Web. While the Web has been represented as a Page + Links, the paper presents the argument that the Semantic Web can be conceptualized as a Notebook + Memex. The argument considers how this model also presents new challenges for fundamental human interaction with computing, and that hypertext models have much to contribute to this new understanding for distributed information systems

    This research notebook (also known as a dramaturgy notebook) was created as a class project for an advanced Theatre History course. We were asked to choose one play to study throughout the semester with the ultimate goal of creating a dramaturgy notebook that would be usable for a production team were we to produce our show of choice. Having a great interest in Christopher Durang and his work, I chose to study Beyond Therapy. We were asked specifically to write a biography on our chosen playwright, a historical context essay, an essay about themes present in the show, and an essay commenting on published criticisms on various performances of the show. Beyond that, we were also asked to write two supplements that might be found in a dramaturgy notebook. For this portion of the assignment I chose to write a press release covering the fictional Linfield production, and to create a question and answer section culminating in some interview questions published on Durangā€™s website. While the notebook as a whole serves to provide context for a production team, each section of the notebook has its own stand-alone function. In 2014, this research was presented at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (Region VII) in Boise, Idaho and was awarded first runner-up in the dramaturgy category

    Deploying Jupyter Notebooks at scale on XSEDE resources for Science Gateways and workshops

    Jupyter Notebooks have become a mainstream tool for interactive computing in every field of science. Jupyter Notebooks are suitable as companion applications for Science Gateways, providing more flexibility and post-processing capability to the users. Moreover they are often used in training events and workshops to provide immediate access to a pre-configured interactive computing environment. The Jupyter team released the JupyterHub web application to provide a platform where multiple users can login and access a Jupyter Notebook environment. When the number of users and memory requirements are low, it is easy to setup JupyterHub on a single server. However, setup becomes more complicated when we need to serve Jupyter Notebooks at scale to tens or hundreds of users. In this paper we will present three strategies for deploying JupyterHub at scale on XSEDE resources. All options share the deployment of JupyterHub on a Virtual Machine on XSEDE Jetstream. In the first scenario, JupyterHub connects to a supercomputer and launches a single node job on behalf of each user and proxies back the Notebook from the computing node back to the user's browser. In the second scenario, implemented in the context of a XSEDE consultation for the IRIS consortium for Seismology, we deploy Docker in Swarm mode to coordinate many XSEDE Jetstream virtual machines to provide Notebooks with persistent storage and quota. In the last scenario we install the Kubernetes containers orchestration framework on Jetstream to provide a fault-tolerant JupyterHub deployment with a distributed filesystem and capability to scale to thousands of users.     Building an application for the writing process

    The idea that writing is a process and not a product is now generally accepted in writing education, but discussions of digital scholarly communication often neglect the idea, in theory and in practice. This thesis report introduces a Mac OS X software package to support the early stages of the writing process, called Brouillon. Brouillonā€™s features include: the concatenation of discrete note files into notebooks; notes appearing in multiple notebooks; note intake from mobile devices via Dropbox; and an open standard file format. The report also provides a model of the organization of products of the writing process, with a focus on Brouillonā€™s most unusual feature, multi-notebook notes. It discusses difficulties in implementation and identifies possibilities for future improvement

    The Notebook: An Accidental Alzheimer\u27s Awareness Campaign

    My paper examines and critiques the portrayal of AlzheimerĀ¹s disease in the popular film, The Notebook. Based off of a Nicholas Sparks novel, The Notebook uses AlzheimerĀ¹s disease as a vehicle to relay a love story, but in doing so, presents a distorted picture of AlzheimerĀ¹s disease to its audience. My paper compares the responsibilities of family caregivers of AlzheimerĀ¹s patients in todayĀ¹s world with the unrealistic family caregiver, Noah, depicted on screen. My paper also explores and exposes inconsistencies between the attractive nursing home experience presented on screen and the less than ideal treatment patients experience in long term care facilities in America today. In addition, my paper uses several other films to examine and compare the emotional distress AlzheimerĀ¹s disease patients and their families face when confronted with the condition: further underlining the idealized familial encounter with the disease depicted in The Notebook. My paper also examines the glamorized representation of AlzheimerĀ¹s disease symptoms in the film. The misrepresentation and glamorization of AlzheimerĀ¹s disease in The Notebook elicit serious implications in todayĀ¹s society. My paper describes how AlzheimerĀ¹s awareness groups and other organizations utilize The Notebook as an educational tool to raise awareness for the condition, despite its imperfections. For better or worse, in todayĀ¹s society, people absorb a myriad of information from film and pop culture, leaving filmmakers with the difficult task of balancing entertainment and medicine in their films. Ultimately, my paper highlights this imbalance in The Notebook and describes its resulting accidental AlzheimerĀ¹s awareness campaign
