Second Set of Spaces
This document describes the Gloss infrastructure supporting implementation of
location-aware services. The document is in two parts. The first part describes
software architecture for the smart space. As described in D8, a local
architecture provides a framework for constructing Gloss applications, termed
assemblies, that run on individual physical nodes, whereas a global
architecture defines an overlay network for linking individual assemblies. The
second part outlines the hardware installation for local sensing. This
describes the first phase of the installation in Strathclyde University
Strongly Universal Quantum Turing Machines and Invariance of Kolmogorov Complexity
We show that there exists a universal quantum Turing machine (UQTM) that can
simulate every other QTM until the other QTM has halted and then halt itself
with probability one. This extends work by Bernstein and Vazirani who have
shown that there is a UQTM that can simulate every other QTM for an arbitrary,
but preassigned number of time steps. As a corollary to this result, we give a
rigorous proof that quantum Kolmogorov complexity as defined by Berthiaume et
al. is invariant, i.e. depends on the choice of the UQTM only up to an additive
constant. Our proof is based on a new mathematical framework for QTMs,
including a thorough analysis of their halting behaviour. We introduce the
notion of mutually orthogonal halting spaces and show that the information
encoded in an input qubit string can always be effectively decomposed into a

Bricklayer: An Authentic Introduction to the Functional Programming Language SML
Functional programming languages are seen by many as instrumental to
effectively utilizing the computational power of multi-core platforms. As a
result, there is growing interest to introduce functional programming and
functional thinking as early as possible within the computer science
curriculum. Bricklayer is an API, written in SML, that provides a set of
abstractions for creating LEGO artifacts which can be viewed using LEGO Digital
Designer. The goal of Bricklayer is to create a problem space (i.e., a set of
LEGO artifacts) that is accessible and engaging to programmers (especially
novice programmers) while providing an authentic introduction to the functional

Surveying human habit modeling and mining techniques in smart spaces
A smart space is an environment, mainly equipped with Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, able to provide services to humans, helping them to perform daily tasks by monitoring the space and autonomously executing actions, giving suggestions and sending alarms. Approaches suggested in the literature may differ in terms of required facilities, possible applications, amount of human intervention required, ability to support multiple users at the same time adapting to changing needs. In this paper, we propose a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that classifies most influential approaches in the area of smart spaces according to a set of dimensions identified by answering a set of research questions. These dimensions allow to choose a specific method or approach according to available sensors, amount of labeled data, need for visual analysis, requirements in terms of enactment and decision-making on the environment.
