Adding generic contextual capabilities to wearable computers
Context-awareness has an increasingly important role to play in the development of wearable computing systems. In order to better define this role we have identified four generic contextual capabilities: sensing, adaptation, resource discovery, and augmentation. A prototype application has been constructed to explore how some of these capabilities could be deployed in a wearable system designed to aid an ecologist's observations of giraffe in a Kenyan game reserve. However, despite the benefits of context-awareness demonstrated in this prototype, widespread innovation of these capabilities is currently stifled by the difficulty in obtaining the contextual data. To remedy this situation the Contextual Information Service (CIS) is introduced. Installed on the user's wearable computer, the CIS provides a common point of access for clients to obtain, manipulate and model contextual information independently of the underlying plethora of data formats and sensor interface mechanisms

Challenges in interface and interaction design for context-aware augmented memory systems
The human long-term memory is astonishingly powerful but fallible at the same time. This makes it very easy to forget information one is sure one actually knows. We propose context-aware augmented memory systems as a solution to this problem. In this paper, we analyse the user interface and interaction design challenges that need to be overcome to build such a system. We hope for fruitful interdisciplinary discussions on how best to address these challenges

Tensions of Data-Driven Reflection: A Case Study of Real-Time Emotional Biosensing
Biosensing displays, increasingly enrolled in emotional reflection, promise authoritative insight by presenting usersâ emotions as discrete categories. Rather than machines interpreting emotions, we sought to explore an alternative with emotional biosensing displays in which users formed their own interpretations and felt comfortable critiquing the display. So, we designed, implemented, and deployed, as a technology probe, an emotional biosensory display: Ripple is a shirt whose pattern changes color responding to the wearerâs skin conductance, which is associated with excitement. 17 participants wore Ripple over 2 days of daily life. While some participants appreciated the âphysical connectionâ Ripple provided between body and emotion, for others Ripple fostered insecurities about âhow muchâ feeling they had. Despite our design intentions, we found participants rarely questioned the displayâs relation to their feelings. Using biopolitics to speculate on Rippleâs surprising authority, we highlight ethical stakes of biosensory representations for sense of self and ways of feeling
The Evolution of First Person Vision Methods: A Survey
The emergence of new wearable technologies such as action cameras and
smart-glasses has increased the interest of computer vision scientists in the
First Person perspective. Nowadays, this field is attracting attention and
investments of companies aiming to develop commercial devices with First Person
Vision recording capabilities. Due to this interest, an increasing demand of
methods to process these videos, possibly in real-time, is expected. Current
approaches present a particular combinations of different image features and
quantitative methods to accomplish specific objectives like object detection,
activity recognition, user machine interaction and so on. This paper summarizes
the evolution of the state of the art in First Person Vision video analysis
between 1997 and 2014, highlighting, among others, most commonly used features,

NTCIR Lifelog: The First Test Collection for Lifelog Research
Test collections have a long history of supporting repeatable
and comparable evaluation in Information Retrieval (IR).
However, thus far, no shared test collection exists for IR
systems that are designed to index and retrieve multimodal
lifelog data. In this paper we introduce the first test col-
lection for personal lifelog data. The requirements for such
a test collection are motivated, the process of creating the
test collection is described, along with an overview of the
test collection and finally suggestions are given for possible
applications of the test collection, which has been employed
for the NTCIR12-Lifelog task
