    Organizations of Agents in Information Fusion Environments

    Information fusion in a context-aware system is understood as a process that assembles assessments of the environment based on its goals. Advantages of intelligent approaches such as Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) and the use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) within the information fusion process are emerging, especially in context-aware scenarios. However, it has become critical to propose improved and efficient ways to handle the enormous quantity of data provided by these approaches. Agents are a suitable option because they can represent autonomous entities by modeling their capabilities, expertise and intentions. In this sense, virtual organizations of agents are an interesting option/possibility because they can provide the necessary capacity to handle open and heterogeneous systems such as those normally found in the information fusion process. This paper presents a new framework that defines a method for creating a virtual organization of software and hardware agents. This approach facilitates the inclusion of context-aware capabilities when developing intelligent and adaptable systems, where functionalities can communicate in a distributed and collaborative way. Several tests have been performed to evaluate this framework and preliminary results and conclusions are presented

    Affect and believability in game characters:a review of the use of affective computing in games

    Virtual agents are important in many digital environments. Designing a character that highly engages users in terms of interaction is an intricate task constrained by many requirements. One aspect that has gained more attention recently is the effective dimension of the agent. Several studies have addressed the possibility of developing an affect-aware system for a better user experience. Particularly in games, including emotional and social features in NPCs adds depth to the characters, enriches interaction possibilities, and combined with the basic level of competence, creates a more appealing game. Design requirements for emotionally intelligent NPCs differ from general autonomous agents with the main goal being a stronger player-agent relationship as opposed to problem solving and goal assessment. Nevertheless, deploying an affective module into NPCs adds to the complexity of the architecture and constraints. In addition, using such composite NPC in games seems beyond current technology, despite some brave attempts. However, a MARPO-type modular architecture would seem a useful starting point for adding emotions

    Weaving a fabric of socially aware agents

    The expansion of web-enabled social interaction has shed light on social aspects of intelligence that have not been typically studied within the AI paradigm so far. In this context, our aim is to understand what constitutes intelligent social behaviour and to build computational systems that support it. We argue that social intelligence involves socially aware, autonomous individuals that agree on how to accomplish a common endeavour, and then enact such agreements. In particular, we provide a framework with the essential elements for such agreements to be achieved and executed by individuals that meet in an open environment.     Managing contextual information in semantically-driven temporal information systems

    Context-aware (CA) systems have demonstrated the provision of a robust solution for personalized information delivery in the current content-rich and dynamic information age we live in. They allow software agents to autonomously interact with users by modeling the user’s environment (e.g. profile, location, relevant public information etc.) as dynamically-evolving and interoperable contexts. There is a flurry of research activities in a wide spectrum at context-aware research areas such as managing the user’s profile, context acquisition from external environments, context storage, context representation and interpretation, context service delivery and matching of context attributes to users‘ queries etc. We propose SDCAS, a Semantic-Driven Context Aware System that facilitates public services recommendation to users at temporal location.
