Service-oriented Context-aware Framework
Location- and context-aware services are emerging technologies in mobile and
desktop environments, however, most of them are difficult to use and do not
seem to be beneficial enough. Our research focuses on designing and creating a
service-oriented framework that helps location- and context-aware,
client-service type application development and use. Location information is
combined with other contexts such as the users' history, preferences and
disabilities. The framework also handles the spatial model of the environment
(e.g. map of a room or a building) as a context. The framework is built on a
semantic backend where the ontologies are represented using the OWL description
language. The use of ontologies enables the framework to run inference tasks
and to easily adapt to new context types. The framework contains a
compatibility layer for positioning devices, which hides the technical
differences of positioning technologies and enables the combination of location
data of various sources

Next generation software environments : principles, problems, and research directions
The past decade has seen a burgeoning of research and development in software environments. Conferences have been devoted to the topic of practical environments, journal papers produced, and commercial systems sold. Given all the activity, one might expect a great deal of consensus on issues, approaches, and techniques. This is not the case, however. Indeed, the term "environment" is still used in a variety of conflicting ways. Nevertheless substantial progress has been made and we are at least nearing consensus on many critical issues.The purpose of this paper is to characterize environments, describe several important principles that have emerged in the last decade or so, note current open problems, and describe some approaches to these problems, with particular emphasis on the activities of one large-scale research program, the Arcadia project. Consideration is also given to two related topics: empirical evaluation and technology transition. That is, how can environments and their constituents be evaluated, and how can new developments be moved effectively into the production sector
Towards a cloudâbased automated surveillance system using wireless technologies
Cloud Computing can bring multiple benefits for Smart Cities. It permits the easy creation of centralized knowledge bases, thus straightforwardly enabling that multiple embedded systems (such as sensor or control devices) can have a collaborative, shared intelligence. In addition to this, thanks to its vast computing power, complex tasks can be done over low-spec devices just by offloading computation to the cloud, with the additional advantage of saving energy. In this work, cloudâs capabilities are exploited to implement and test a cloud-based surveillance system. Using a shared, 3D symbolic world model, different devices have a complete knowledge of all the elements, people and intruders in a certain open area or inside a building. The implementation of a volumetric, 3D, object-oriented, cloud-based world model (including semantic information) is novel as far as we know. Very simple devices (orange Pi) can send RGBD streams (using kinect cameras) to the cloud, where all the processing is distributed and done thanks to its inherent scalability. A proof-of-concept experiment is done in this paper in a testing lab with multiple cameras connected to the cloud with 802.11ac wireless technology. Our results show that this kind of surveillance system is possible currently, and that trends indicate that it can be improved at a short term to produce high performance vigilance system using low-speed devices. In addition, this proof-of-concept claims that many interesting opportunities and challenges arise, for example, when mobile watch robots and fixed cameras would act as a team for carrying out complex collaborative surveillance strategies.Ministerio de EconomĂa y Competitividad TEC2016-77785-PJunta de AndalucĂa P12-TIC-130

Integration, management and communication of heterogeneous design resources with WWW technologies
Recently, advanced information technologies have opened new pos-sibilities for collaborative designs. In this paper, a Web-based collaborative de-sign environment is proposed, where heterogeneous design applications can be integrated with a common interface, managed dynamically for publishing and searching, and communicated with each other for integrated multi-objective de-sign. The CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) is employed as an implementation tool to enable integration and communication of design application programs; and the XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is used as a common data descriptive language for data exchange between heterogeneous applications and for resource description and recording. This paper also intro-duces the implementation of the system and the encapsulating issues of existing legacy applications. At last, an example of gear design based on the system is il-lustrated to identify the methods and procedure developed by this research
A game-based approach to the teaching of object-oriented programming languages
Students often have difficulties when trying to understand the concepts of object-oriented programming
(OOP). This paper presents a contribution to the teaching of OOP languages through a game-oriented
approach based on the interaction with tangible user interfaces (TUIs). The use of a specific type of
commercial distributed TUI (Sifteo cubes), in which several small physical devices have sensing, wireless
communication and user-directed output capabilities, is applied to the teaching of the C# programming
language, since the operation of these devices can be controlled by user programs written in C#. For our
experiment, we selected a sample of students with a sufficient knowledge about procedural programming,
which was divided into two groups: The first one had a standard introductory C# course, whereas
the second one had an experimental C# course that included, in addition to the contents of the previous
one, two demonstration programs that illustrated some OOP basic concepts using the TUI features.
Finally, both groups completed two tests: a multiple-choice exam for evaluating the acquisition of basic
OOP concepts and a C# programming exercise. The analysis of the results from the tests indicates that the
group of students that attended the course including the TUI demos showed a higher interest level (i.e.
they felt more motivated) during the course exposition than the one that attended the standard introductory
C# course. Furthermore, the students from the experimental group achieved an overall better
mark. Therefore, we can conclude that the technological contribution of Sifteo cubes â used as a
distributed TUI by which OOP basic concepts are represented in a tangible and a visible way â to the
teaching of the C# language has a positive influence on the learning of this language and such basic
concepts
