Social Equity and COVID-19: The Case of African Americans

    Get PDF
Emerging statistics demonstrate that COVID-19 disproportionately affects African Americans. The effects of COVID-19 for this population are inextricably linked to areas of systemic oppression and disenfranchisement, which are further exacerbated by COVID-19: (1) healthcare inequality; (2) segregation, overall health, and food insecurity; (3) underrepresentation in government and the medical profession; and (4) inequalities in participatory democracy and public engagement. Following a discussion of these issues, this article shares early and preliminary lessons and strategies on how public administration scholars and practitioners can lead in crafting equitable responses to this global pandemic to uplift the African American community

Crafting a Systematic Literature Review on Open-Source Platforms

This working paper unveils the crafting of a systematic literature review on open-source platforms. The high-competitive mobile devices market, where several players such as Apple, Google, Nokia and Microsoft run a platforms- war with constant shifts in their technological strategies, is gaining increasing attention from scholars. It matters, then, to review previous literature on past platforms-wars, such as the ones from the PC and game-console industries, and assess its implications to the current mobile devices platforms-war. The paper starts by justifying the purpose and rationale behind this literature review on open-source platforms. The concepts of open-source software and computer-based platforms were then discussed both individually and in unison, in order to clarify the core-concept of 'open-source platform' that guides this literature review. The detailed design of the employed methodological strategy is then presented as the central part of this paper. The paper concludes with preliminary findings organizing previous literature on open-source platforms for the purpose of guiding future research in this area.Comment: As presented in 10th IFIP WG 2.13 International Conference on Open Source Systems, OSS 2014, San Jos\'e, Costa Rica, May 6-9, 201

Designing the Metropolitan Future of Shanghai: A Local Interaction Platform Looking to Incorporate Urban Access Design Considerations in Planning for a Fairer, Denser and Greener Mega-City

    Get PDF
Urban design, that will formulate resourceful ways to promote more sustainable and socially inclusive mobility patterns, is the key to reversing the alarming energy over-consumption, the environmental degradation, and the negative distributional impacts associated with today's cities that tend to relegate anthropocentric design considerations to the status of a non-issue. Urban access is an innovative and truly trans-disciplinary design axiom that aims to incorporate these considerations to mainstream future urban planning. It does this by ensuring that every member of the society has access to those locations and resources one needs to achieve a sustainable standard of living and productivity without limiting other people’s rights of access. Designing built environments for achieving optimum urban access levels for everyone, regardless of possible age or mobility limitations, serves as the thematic framework for the research studies of the Local Interaction Platform (LIP) Shanghai discussed in this paper. This is a Sino-Swedish research scheme goaled towards increasing capacities, in order to transform current, unsustainable urban development pathways to more sustainable urban futures for the metropolitan environment of Shanghai. This paper presents a research synopsis of the various and diverse urban access driven studies that are on the focus of LIP Shanghai regarding the city’s: existent road network infrastructure limitations, bus systems accessibility design, potential to have a public bicycle programme in place and existing car travel demand management mechanism and its possible alternative

The internationalization process of Italian fashion firms: the governance role of the founding team

This study aims at exploring the process of internationalization in the Italian fashion firms, focusing on strategy-structure fit and the governance role of the founding team in providing such a fit. It does so with a single case study of a leading fashion firm. It suggests that classic deterministic theories about strategy-structure fit in growing firms offer poor guide. The strategy is entirely \emergent" and inspired by the specific talents of the founding team. Evidence confirms the causal link between strategy and structure: company structure is network based and evolves according to the emerging strategy. However, the development route does not follow any deterministic model: Uppsala's model of incremental and cognitive internationalisation, especially in its revisited and network based form, appears to be the more appropriate reference for the case, characterised by creative dynamics that are constantly evolving, following the vision and strategy that are constantly provided by the founding team.network, fashion industry, strategy, founding team, internationalisation, structure

A National Veterans Strategy: The Economic, Social and Security Imperative

    Get PDF
This publication details the foundational logic supporting a call to action, related to a broad-based effort to articulate and institutionalize a National Veterans Strategy. We argue that coordinated, "whole-of-government" action toward this end is essential to meet the nation's most important economic, social, and security obligations. Furthermore, we contend that the second Obama administration, working in close collaboration with executive agencies, Congress, and the private sector, is well-positioned to act on what we perceive to be a historic opportunity -- capitalizing on both the foundations of veteran-focused policy and progress enacted over the past decade and the overwhelming public support for returning veterans and military families -- to craft and institutionalize a National Veterans Strategy. Our purpose is to provide a researched and logically-developed case for action that is grounded in this nation's social and cultural traditions and attuned to the practical realities of our contemporary economic and political climate
