    An evaluation of home range models for marine fish tracking and fine scale habitat use and movement patterns of age 1 Greenland cod (Gadus macrocephalus ogac)

    My thesis examines fine-scale habitat use and movement patterns of age 1 Greenland cod (Gadus macrocephalus ogac) tracked using acoustic telemetry. Recent advances in tracking technologies such as GPS and acoustic telemetry have led to increasingly large and detailed datasets that present new opportunities for researchers to address fine-scale ecological questions regarding animal movement and spatial distribution. There is a growing demand for home range models that will not only work with massive quantities of autocorrelated data, but that can also exploit the added detail inherent in these high-resolution datasets. Most published home range studies use radio-telemetry or satellite data from terrestrial mammals or avian species, and most studies that evaluate the relative performance of home range models use simulated data. In Chapter 2, I used actual field-collected data from age-1 Greenland cod tracked with acoustic telemetry to evaluate the accuracy and precision of six home range models: minimum convex polygons, kernel densities with plug-in bandwidth selection and the reference bandwidth, adaptive local convex hulls, Brownian bridges, and dynamic Brownian bridges. I then applied the most appropriate model to two years (2010-2012) of tracking data collected from 82 tagged Greenland cod tracked in Newman Sound, Newfoundland, Canada, to determine diel and seasonal differences in habitat use and movement patterns (Chapter 3). Little is known of juvenile cod ecology, so resolving these relationships will provide valuable insight into activity patterns, habitat use, and predator-prey dynamics, while filling a knowledge gap regarding the use of space by age 1 Greenland cod in a coastal nursery habitat. By doing so, my thesis demonstrates an appropriate technique for modelling the spatial use of fish from acoustic telemetry data that can be applied to high-resolution, high-frequency tracking datasets collected from mobile organisms in any environment

Among intra-cell orthogonal schemes, we show that the most efficient broadcast signal is a linear superposition of many binary orthogonal waveforms. The information set is also binary. Each orthogonal waveform is generated by modulating a periodic stream of finite-length chip pulses with a receiver-specific signature code that is derived from a special class of binary antipodal, superimposed recursive orthogonal code sequences. With the imposition of practical pulse shapes for carrier modulation, we show that multi-carrier format using cosine functions has higher bandwidth efficiency than the single-carrier format, even in an ideal Gaussian channel model. Each pulse is shaped via a prototype baseband filter such that when the demodulated signal is detected through a baseband matched filter, the resulting output samples satisfy the Generalized Nyquist criterion. Specifically, we propose finite-length, time overlapping orthogonal pulse shapes that are g-Nyquist. They are derived from extended and modulated lapped transforms by proving the equivalence between Perfect Reconstruction and Generalized Nyquist criteria. In our proposed cellular broadcast model, the receiver population is partitioned into smaller mutually exclusive subsets called cells. In each cell an autonomous transmitter with average transmit power constraint communicates to all receivers in its cell by broadcasting. The broadcast signal is a multiplex of independent information from many remotely located sources. Each receiver extracts its desired information from the composite signal, which consists of a distorted version of the desired signal, interference from neighboring cells and additive white Gaussian noise. Waveform distortion is caused by time and frequency selective linear time-variant channel that exists between every transmitter-receiver pair. Under such system and design constraints, and a fixed bandwidth for the entire network, we show that the most efficient resource allocation policy for each transmitter based on information theoretic measures such as channel capacity, simultaneously achievable rate regions and sum-rate is superposition coding with successive interference cancellation. The optimal policy dominates over its sub-optimal alternatives at the boundaries of the capacity region. By taking into account practical constraints such as finite constellation sets, frequency translation via carrier modulation, pulse shaping and real-time signal processing and decoding of finite-length waveforms and fairness in rate distribution, we argue that sub-optimal orthogonal policies are preferred. For intra-cell multiplexing, all orthogonal schemes based on frequency, time and code division are equivalent.     This dissertation describes a new type of tactile sensor and an improved version of the dynamic tactile sensing approach that can provide a regularly updated and accurate estimate of minimum applied forces for use in the control of gripper manipulation. The pre-slip sensing algorithm is proposed and implemented into two-finger robot gripper. An algorithm that can discriminate between types of contact surface and recognize objects at the contact stage is also proposed. A technique for recognizing objects using tactile sensor arrays, and a method based on the quadric surface parameter for classifying grasped objects is described. Tactile arrays can recognize surface types on contact, making it possible for a tactile system to recognize translation, rotation, and scaling of an object independently.Diese Dissertation beschreibt eine neue Art von taktilen Sensoren und einen verbesserten Ansatz zur dynamischen Erfassung von taktilen daten, der in regelmäßigen Zeitabständen eine genaue Bewertung der minimalen Greifkraft liefert, die zur Steuerung des Greifers nötig ist.
