    Elementary College and Career Readiness Curriculum: A School Counselor Intervention

    Labor market projections indicate that across all industries, jobs will require increased post-secondary education, credentials, and training requirements. The U.S. will not have the workers that meet these requirements, resulting in a worker shortage. Knowing this predicted shift, our current education system is charged with the responsibility of educating and preparing students for these positions and to fill the needs of our society. Career development is a lifelong process beginning in childhood, and school counselors are responsible for supporting this healthy development. Despite this call to action, there is a of lack content, resources, or evidence-based programs available for elementary career counseling interventions. This project explores and combines the developmental needs of elementary students and effective implementation strategies for healthy career growth to create a ready-to-use fourth grade Tier One intervention for school counselors. All necessary resources are included for lesson plans, career day facilitation, and parent/guardian involvement. Data collection procedures within the unit will facilitate the creation of evidence for school counselors and researchers to more effectively advance the elementary career development field, advocate for elementary school counseling, and implement evidence-based career counseling interventions

    Building a Tailored Text Messaging System for Smoking Cessation in Native American Populations

    When starting new and healthy habits or encouraging vigilance against returning to poor habits, a simple text message can be beneficial. Text messages also have the advantage of being easily accessible for lower-income populations spread over a rural area, who may not be able to afford smartphones with apps or data plans. Users benefit the most from text messages that are customized for them, but personalization requires time and effort on part of the user and the counselor. However, personalization that focuses on the cultural background of a pool of recipients, in addition to general personal preferences, can be a low-cost method of ensuring the best experience for patients interested in taking up new habits. In this paper, we discuss the development of a system for motivating users to quit smoking designed for Native American users in South Dakota, using text messaging as a daily intervention method for patients. Our results show that focusing on modular message customization options and messages with a conversational tone best helps our goal of providing users with customization options that help motivate them to live happy and healthy lifestyles

    Public service employment : a review of programs in selected OECD countries and transition economies

    This paper examines one type of program that is used by many OECD and CEEC countries (Central and Eastern European countries) to ease the pain of structural adjustment and create jobs, namely Public Service Employment (PSE). Such programs are characterized by the employment of unemployed persons, financed by the government, to provide services and/or support infrastructure development (public works). Many of those in the"non-interventionist"camp view these programs as a waste of public funds that could be used in more productive economic investments. Some of those in the"interventionist camp"also view the programs in a similar manner and feel that, while someintervention is needed, PSE programs are not an appropriate tool. However, a number of OECD and CEEC countries are implementing such programs. This report reviews and summarizes the experiences of several countries-Denmark, France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Poland, and Hungary. While not a representative sample, some of these countries heavily emphasized the use of such programs. The American program, discontinued over 15 years ago, remains relevant because this is where some of the best research has been conducted.     Clinical Trials ID: NCT04723784[Abstract] Aims: To determine the psychosocial impact of assistive technology(AT) based on robotics and artificial intelligence in the life of people with disabilities. Background: The best match between any person with disabilities and its AT only can be gotten through a complete assessment and monitoring of his/her needs, abilities, priorities, difficulties and limitations. Without this analysis, it's possible that the device won't meet the individual's expectations. Therefore, it is important that any project focused on the development of innovating AT for people with disabilities includes the perspective of outcome measures as an important phase of the research. In this sense, the integration of the assessment, implementation process and outcome measures is crucial to guarantee the transferability for the project findings and to get the perspective from the final user. Methods: Pilot study, with prospective, longitudinal and analytical cohort. The study lasts from July 2020 until April 2023. The sample is formed by people with disabilities, ages from 2-21, that will participate from the first stage of the process (initial assessment of their abilities and needs) to the final application of outcome measures instruments (with a complete implication during the test of technology). Discussion: Only with the active participation of the person is possible to carry out a user-centered approach.
