    Control and communication systems for automated vehicles cooperation and coordination

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe technological advances in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are exponentially improving over the last century. The objective is to provide intelligent and innovative services for the different modes of transportation, towards a better, safer, coordinated and smarter transport networks. The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) focus is divided into two main categories; the first is to improve existing components of the transport networks, while the second is to develop intelligent vehicles which facilitate the transportation process. Different research efforts have been exerted to tackle various aspects in the fields of the automated vehicles. Accordingly, this thesis is addressing the problem of multiple automated vehicles cooperation and coordination. At first, 3DCoAutoSim driving simulator was developed in Unity game engine and connected to Robot Operating System (ROS) framework and Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO). 3DCoAutoSim is an abbreviation for "3D Simulator for Cooperative Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Vehicles Simulator". 3DCoAutoSim was tested under different circumstances and conditions, afterward, it was validated through carrying-out several controlled experiments and compare the results against their counter reality experiments. The obtained results showed the efficiency of the simulator to handle different situations, emulating real world vehicles. Next is the development of the iCab platforms, which is an abbreviation for "Intelligent Campus Automobile". The platforms are two electric golf-carts that were modified mechanically, electronically and electrically towards the goal of automated driving. Each iCab was equipped with several on-board embedded computers, perception sensors and auxiliary devices, in order to execute the necessary actions for self-driving. Moreover, the platforms are capable of several Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication schemes, applying three layers of control, utilizing cooperation architecture for platooning, executing localization systems, mapping systems, perception systems, and finally several planning systems. Hundreds of experiments were carried-out for the validation of each system in the iCab platform. Results proved the functionality of the platform to self-drive from one point to another with minimal human intervention.Los avances tecnológicos en Sistemas Inteligentes de Transporte (ITS) han crecido de forma exponencial durante el último siglo. El objetivo de estos avances es el de proveer de sistemas innovadores e inteligentes para ser aplicados a los diferentes medios de transporte, con el fin de conseguir un transporte mas eficiente, seguro, coordinado e inteligente. El foco de los ITS se divide principalmente en dos categorías; la primera es la mejora de los componentes ya existentes en las redes de transporte, mientras que la segunda es la de desarrollar vehículos inteligentes que hagan más fácil y eficiente el transporte. Diferentes esfuerzos de investigación se han llevado a cabo con el fin de solucionar los numerosos aspectos asociados con la conducción autónoma. Esta tesis propone una solución para la cooperación y coordinación de múltiples vehículos. Para ello, en primer lugar se desarrolló un simulador (3DCoAutoSim) de conducción basado en el motor de juegos Unity, conectado al framework Robot Operating System (ROS) y al simulador Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO). 3DCoAutoSim ha sido probado en diferentes condiciones y circunstancias, para posteriormente validarlo con resultados a través de varios experimentos reales controlados. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron la eficiencia del simulador para manejar diferentes situaciones, emulando los vehículos en el mundo real. En segundo lugar, se desarrolló la plataforma de investigación Intelligent Campus Automobile (iCab), que consiste en dos carritos eléctricos de golf, que fueron modificados eléctrica, mecánica y electrónicamente para darle capacidades autónomas. Cada iCab se equipó con diferentes computadoras embebidas, sensores de percepción y unidades auxiliares, con la finalidad de transformarlos en vehículos autónomos. Además, se les han dado capacidad de comunicación multimodal (V2X), se les han aplicado tres capas de control, incorporando una arquitectura de cooperación para operación en modo tren, diferentes esquemas de localización, mapeado, percepción y planificación de rutas. Innumerables experimentos han sido realizados para validar cada uno de los diferentes sistemas incorporados.     Examining Safety Behaviour on Construction Sites Using Virtual Reality

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the behaviour of people in relation to construction site hazards using virtual reality. The three broad areas of study are: Firstly, comparing the effect of the location of hazards and types of warnings on hazard identification and rate of safety violations. Secondly, comparing laptop screen and VR headset displays. Finally, investigating the effect of safe and unsafe co-worker examples on people’s safety behaviours. This study used an eye-tracking virtual reality (VR) headset and an electroencephalograph (EEG) brain band to track people’s gaze points and measure their brainwaves as they interact with a virtual construction site. This study identified the situations when bollards, warning signs, beeping sounds and verbal warnings should be used to protect people from injuries. A model of perception and decision-making processes for navigating a construction site was proposed. This model contains risk attitudes, behaviours, decisions and consequences based on the site layout, especially the warning systems, and co-worker behaviours. It is also suggested that a VR application should have a desktop version for better accessibility, and that VR hardware should be selected to fit the specific situation. A limitation of this study is that the participants were Australian Civil Engineering students, rather than, for example, construction site labourers. The novelty of this study is the way that eye-tracking, EEG and VR technologies have been combined to test the effectiveness of hazard controls on construction sites. This thesis not only contributes to safety management in the construction industry, but also helps to establish the fundamental design principles of VR construction simulators for training purposes

    Las funciones cognitivas del cerebro desempeñan un papel muy importante en la vida cotidiana de los seres humanos, por lo tanto, los patrones de pensamiento mental, que están presentes en las señales neuronales, pueden ser utilizados para mejorar tanto la vida de personas sanas como de personas discapacitadas. Las Interfaces Cerebro-Ordenador (BCI) son sistemas de comunicación, que permiten a los seres humanos interactuar mentalmente con dispositivos y m aquinas externas. Detectan, registran y analizan electroencefalogramas (EEG), los cuales re ejan ciertas funciones o mandatos cerebrales. En este trabajo, la lectura de los datos de EEG se recopilan y clasifican, utilizando un casco BCI de bajo coste y un clasificador del tipo Red Neural (NN). El objetivo es clasificar e identificar las decisiones de ruta de los usuarios, quienes están a bordo de un vehículo automatizado. El sistema aprovecha la capacidad de control autónomo del vehículo, y el sensor de ondas cerebrales permite al usuario tomar la decisión de la ruta. Se llevaron a cabo varios experimentos para el entrenamiento del clasificador, además, se realizaron numerosos experimentos de ensayo. Los resultados obtenidos muestran una clasificación exitosa de las decisiones de los sujetos, mejorando la capacidad de movilidad de las personas con discapacidad física.Ingeniería Electrónica Industrial y Automátic

    The Design and Use of a Smartphone Data Collection Tool and Accompanying Configuration Language

    Understanding human behaviour is key to understanding the spread of epidemics, habit dispersion, and the efficacy of health interventions. Investigation into the patterns of and drivers for human behaviour has often been facilitated by paper tools such as surveys, journals, and diaries. These tools have drawbacks in that they can be forgotten, go unfilled, and depend on often unreliable human memories. Researcher-driven data collection mechanisms, such as interviews and direct observation, alleviate some of these problems while introducing others, such as bias and observer effects. In response to this, technological means such as special-purpose data collection hardware, wireless sensor networks, and apps for smart devices have been built to collect behavioural data. These technologies further reduce the problems experienced by more traditional behavioural research tools, but often experience problems of reliability, generality, extensibility, and ease of configuration. This document details the construction of a smartphone-based app designed to collect data on human behaviour such that the difficulties of traditional tools are alleviated while still addressing the problems faced by modern supplemental technology. I describe the app's main data collection engine and its construction, architecture, reliability, generality, and extensibility, as well as the programming language developed to configure it and its feature set. To demonstrate the utility of the tool and its configuration language, I describe how they have been used to collect data in the field. Specifically, eleven case studies are presented in which the tool's architecture, flexibility, generality, extensibility, modularity, and ease of configuration have been exploited to facilitate a variety of behavioural monitoring endeavours. I further explain how the engine performs data collection, the major abstractions it employs, how its design and the development techniques used ensure ongoing reliability, and how the engine and its configuration language could be extended in the future to facilitate a greater range of experiments that require behavioural data to be collected. Finally, features and modules of the engine's encompassing system, iEpi, are presented that have not otherwise been documented to give the reader an understanding of where the work fits into the larger data collection and processing endeavour that spawned it
