Roaming Real-Time Applications - Mobility Services in IPv6 Networks
Emerging mobility standards within the next generation Internet Protocol,
IPv6, promise to continuously operate devices roaming between IP networks.
Associated with the paradigm of ubiquitous computing and communication, network
technology is on the spot to deliver voice and videoconferencing as a standard
internet solution. However, current roaming procedures are too slow, to remain
seamless for real-time applications. Multicast mobility still waits for a
convincing design. This paper investigates the temporal behaviour of mobile
IPv6 with dedicated focus on topological impacts. Extending the hierarchical
mobile IPv6 approach we suggest protocol improvements for a continuous
handover, which may serve bidirectional multicast communication, as well. Along
this line a multicast mobility concept is introduced as a service for clients
and sources, as they are of dedicated importance in multipoint conferencing
applications. The mechanisms introduced do not rely on assumptions of any
specific multicast routing protocol in use.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
A network mobility management architecture for a heteregeneous network environment
Network mobility management enables mobility of personal area networks and vehicular networks across heterogeneous access networks using a Mobile Router. This dissertation presents a network mobility management architecture for minimizing the impact of handoffs on the communications of nodes in the mobile network. The architecture addresses mobility in legacy networks without infrastructure support, but can also exploit infrastructure support for improved handoff performance. Further, the proposed architecture increases the efficiency of communications of nodes in the mobile network with counter parts in the fixed network through the use of caching and route optimization. The performance and costs of the proposed architecture are evaluated through empirical and numerical analysis. The analysis shows the feasibility of the architecture in the networks of today and in those of the near future.
Esitetyssä arkkitehtuurissa verkonvaihdon vaikutus minimoidaan varustamalla liikkuva reititin kahdella radiolla. Käyttäen kahta radiota liikkuva reititin pystyy suorittamaan verkonvaihdon keskeyttämättä päätelaitteiden yhteyksiä, mikäli verkonvaihtoon on riittävästi aikaa. Käytettävissa oleva aika riippuu liikkuvan reitittimen nopeudesta ja radioverkon rakenteesta. Arkkitehtuuri osaa myös hyödyntää infrastruktuurin tukea saumattomaan verkonvaihtoon. Verkkoinfrastruktuurin tuki nopeuttaa verkonvaihdosprosessia, kasvattaenmaksimaalista verkonvaihdos tahtia.
Fast handover algorithm for hierarchical mobile IPv6 macro-mobility management
Mobile lh.6 (MIPv6) has some limitations due to long
delays and signaling load during handover operation.
Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) is the extension of MIPv6
that is designed to reduce the signaling load and to improve
handover speed of MIPv6 by splitting the mobility management
into macro and micro mobility management schemes. However
HhfIPv6 only improves micro mobility problem where the
signifcant delay still occurs in the macro mobility management
because the handover algorithm is similar with the MIPv6
environment,
This paper proposes a new fast handover algorithm that
overcomes the limitations in Mobile MIPv6 and its extension
HMIPv6. Our design objective is to re-establish the
communication traffic flow quickly and to minimize the service
disruption delay that occnrs during handover process in a macro
mobility environment. This handover algorithm is based on the
modification of the HMIPv6 protocol using the multicast
technique concept. This algorithm will enable the mobile node to
receive packet faster than HMIPv6 protocol during handover,
seamlessly and transparently.

Handover in Mobile WiMAX Networks: The State of Art and Research Issues
The next-generation Wireless Metropolitan Area
Networks, using the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave
Access (WiMAX) as the core technology based on the IEEE
802.16 family of standards, is evolving as a Fourth-Generation
(4G) technology. With the recent introduction of mobility management
frameworks in the IEEE 802.16e standard, WiMAX
is now placed in competition to the existing and forthcoming
generations of wireless technologies for providing ubiquitous
computing solutions. However, the success of a good mobility
framework largely depends on the capability of performing fast
and seamless handovers irrespective of the deployed architectural
scenario. Now that the IEEE has defined the Mobile WiMAX
(IEEE 802.16e) MAC-layer handover management framework,
the Network Working Group (NWG) of the WiMAX Forum
is working on the development of the upper layers. However,
the path to commercialization of a full-fledged WiMAX mobility
framework is full of research challenges. This article focuses on
potential handover-related research issues in the existing and
future WiMAX mobility framework. A survey of these issues in
the MAC, Network and Cross-Layer scenarios is presented along
with discussion of the different solutions to those challenges. A
comparative study of the proposed solutions, coupled with some
insights to the relevant issues, is also included

MOBILITY SUPPORT ARCHITECTURES FOR NEXT-GENERATION WIRELESS NETWORKS
With the convergence of the wireless networks and the Internet and the booming
demand for multimedia applications, the next-generation (beyond the third generation, or
B3G) wireless systems are expected to be all IP-based and provide real-time and non-real-time
mobile services anywhere and anytime. Powerful and efficient mobility support is
thus the key enabler to fulfil such an attractive vision by supporting various mobility
scenarios. This thesis contributes to this interesting while challenging topic.
After a literature review on mobility support architectures and protocols, the thesis
starts presenting our contributions with a generic multi-layer mobility support framework,
which provides a general approach to meet the challenges of handling comprehensive
mobility issues. The cross-layer design methodology is introduced to coordinate the
protocol layers for optimised system design. Particularly, a flexible and efficient cross-layer
signalling scheme is proposed for interlayer interactions. The proposed generic
framework is then narrowed down with several fundamental building blocks identified to
be focused on as follows.
As widely adopted, we assume that the IP-based access networks are organised into
administrative domains, which are inter-connected through a global IP-based wired core
network. For a mobile user who roams from one domain to another, macro (inter-domain)
mobility management should be in place for global location tracking and effective handoff
support for both real-time and non-real-lime applications. Mobile IP (MIP) and the Session
Initiation Protocol (SIP) are being adopted as the two dominant standard-based macro-mobility
architectures, each of which has mobility entities and messages in its own right.
The work explores the joint optimisations and interactions of MIP and SIP when utilising
the complementary power of both protocols. Two distinctive integrated MIP-SIP
architectures are designed and evaluated, compared with their hybrid alternatives and other
approaches. The overall analytical and simulation results shown significant performance
improvements in terms of cost-efficiency, among other metrics.
Subsequently, for the micro (intra-domain) mobility scenario where a mobile user
moves across IP subnets within a domain, a micro mobility management architecture is
needed to support fast handoffs and constrain signalling messaging loads incurred by intra-domain
movements within the domain. The Hierarchical MIPv6 (HMIPv6) and the Fast
Handovers for MIPv6 (FMIPv6) protocols are selected to fulfil the design requirements.
The work proposes enhancements to these protocols and combines them in an optimised
way. resulting in notably improved performances in contrast to a number of alternative
approaches
Contributions to Vehicular Communications Systems and Schemes
The last decade marked the rise of vehicular applications as a new source of revenue and a key differentiator in the vehicular industry. Vehicular Applications are classified into safety and infotainment applications. The former include smart lane change, road hazard warning, and
cooperative collision avoidance; however, the latter include Video on Demand (VoD), live streaming, weather and news broadcast, and interactive games. On one hand, infotainment
vehicular applications require high bandwidth and relatively low latency; on the other hand, safety applications requires a very low end to end delay and a reliable communication channel to deliver emergency messages. To satisfy the thirst for practical applications, vehicle manufacturers along with research institutes introduced several in-vehicle and Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) applications. However, the wireless
network infrastructure was not designed to handle vehicular applications, due to the high mobility of vehicles, unpredictability of drivers’ behavior, and dynamic traffic patterns. Handoff is one of the main challenges of vehicular networks since the high mobility puts pressure on the wireless network to finish the handoff within a short period. Moreover, the unpredictability of driver behavior causes the traditional proactive handoff protocols to fail, since the prediction of the next router may change based on the driver’s decision. Moreover, the vehicular network may
suffer from bad Quality of Service (QoS) in the regions of handoff due to natural obstacles, large vehicles, or weather conditions. This thesis focuses on the handoff on the vehicular environment and its effect on the vehicular
applications. We consider practical solutions for the currently deployed networks mainly Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks, the Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) infrastructure, and the tools that can be used effectively to emulate handoff on the vehicular networks

Mobility management for Wi-Fi infrastructure and mesh networks
Magister Scientiae - MScThis thesis shows that mobility management protocols for infrastructure Internet may be used in a wireless mesh network environment. In this research Mobile IPv6 and Fast Handover for Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 are successfully implemented in a wireless mesh network environment. Two experiments were carried out: vertical and horizontal handover simulations. Vertical handover simulation involved a heterogeneous wireless environment comprising both wireless local area and wireless mesh networks. An OPNET Mobile IPv6 model was used to simulate the vertical handover experiment. Horizontal handover simulation involved Mobile IPv6 and Fast Handover for
Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 applied in ns2 wireless mesh network. The vertical handover results show that MIPv6 is able to manage vertical handover between wireless local area and wireless mesh network. The horizontal handover results illustrate that in mesh networks, Fast Handover for Hierarchical Mobile IPv6's performance is superior to Mobile IPv6. Fast Handover for Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 generates more throughput and less delay than Mobile IPv6. Furthermore, Fast Handover for Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 drops less data packets than Mobile IPv6. The simulations indicate that even though there are multi-hop communications in wireless mesh networks,
the performance of the multi-hop routing may not play a big role in the handover performance. This is so because the mesh routers are mostly static and the multi-hop routes are readily available. Thus, the total handover delay is not affected too much by the WMN hops in the paths for signaling message transmission.South Afric
