On Global Warming (Softening Global Constraints)
We describe soft versions of the global cardinality constraint and the
regular constraint, with efficient filtering algorithms maintaining domain
consistency. For both constraints, the softening is achieved by augmenting the
underlying graph. The softened constraints can be used to extend the
meta-constraint framework for over-constrained problems proposed by Petit,

The constraint of difference is known to the constraint programming community
since Lauriere introduced Alice in 1978. Since then, several solving strategies

Solving Set Constraint Satisfaction Problems using ROBDDs
In this paper we present a new approach to modeling finite set domain
constraint problems using Reduced Ordered Binary Decision Diagrams (ROBDDs). We
show that it is possible to construct an efficient set domain propagator which
compactly represents many set domains and set constraints using ROBDDs. We
demonstrate that the ROBDD-based approach provides unprecedented flexibility in
modeling constraint satisfaction problems, leading to performance improvements.
We also show that the ROBDD-based modeling approach can be extended to the
modeling of integer and multiset constraint problems in a straightforward
manner. Since domain propagation is not always practical, we also show how to
incorporate less strict consistency notions into the ROBDD framework, such as
set bounds, cardinality bounds and lexicographic bounds consistency. Finally,
we present experimental results that demonstrate the ROBDD-based solver
performs better than various more conventional constraint solvers on several
standard set constraint problems
Conjunctions of Among Constraints
Many existing global constraints can be encoded as a conjunction of among
constraints. An among constraint holds if the number of the variables in its
scope whose value belongs to a prespecified set, which we call its range, is
within some given bounds. It is known that domain filtering algorithms can
benefit from reasoning about the interaction of among constraints so that
values can be filtered out taking into consideration several among constraints
simultaneously. The present pa- per embarks into a systematic investigation on
the circumstances under which it is possible to obtain efficient and complete
domain filtering algorithms for conjunctions of among constraints. We start by
observing that restrictions on both the scope and the range of the among
constraints are necessary to obtain meaningful results. Then, we derive a
domain flow-based filtering algorithm and present several applications. In
particular, it is shown that the algorithm unifies and generalizes several

Hybrid tractability of soft constraint problems
The constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) is a central generic problem in
computer science and artificial intelligence: it provides a common framework
for many theoretical problems as well as for many real-life applications. Soft
constraint problems are a generalisation of the CSP which allow the user to
model optimisation problems. Considerable effort has been made in identifying
properties which ensure tractability in such problems. In this work, we
initiate the study of hybrid tractability of soft constraint problems; that is,
properties which guarantee tractability of the given soft constraint problem,
but which do not depend only on the underlying structure of the instance (such
as being tree-structured) or only on the types of soft constraints in the
instance (such as submodularity). We present several novel hybrid classes of
soft constraint problems, which include a machine scheduling problem,
constraint problems of arbitrary arities with no overlapping nogoods, and the
SoftAllDiff constraint with arbitrary unary soft constraints. An important tool

On the Reification of Global Constraints
We introduce a simple idea for deriving reified global constraints in a systematic way. It is based on
the observation that most global constraints can be reformulated as a conjunction of pure functional dependency
constraints together with a constraint that can be easily reified. We first show how the core constraints of the
Global Constraint Catalogue can be reified and we then identify several reification categories that apply to at
least 82% of the constraints in the Global Constraint Catalogue
Toward an automaton Constraint for Local Search
We explore the idea of using finite automata to implement new constraints for
local search (this is already a successful technique in constraint-based global
search). We show how it is possible to maintain incrementally the violations of
a constraint and its decision variables from an automaton that describes a
ground checker for that constraint. We establish the practicality of our
approach idea on real-life personnel rostering problems, and show that it is
competitive with the approach of [Pralong, 2007]
