Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management Final Report
The Service Oriented Toolkit for Research Data Management project was co-funded by the JISC Managing Research Data Programme 2011-2013 and The University of Hertfordshire. The project focused on the realisation of practical benefits for operationalising an institutional approach to good practice in RDM. The objectives of the project were to audit current best practice, develop technology demonstrators with the assistance of leading UH research groups, and then reflect these developments back into the wider internal and external research community via a toolkit of services and guidance. The overall aim was to contribute to the efficacy and quality of research data plans, and establish and cement good data management practice in line with local and national policy
Greening information management: final report
As the recent JISC report on âthe âgreeningâ of ICT in education [1] highlights, the increasing reliance on ICT to underpin the business functions of higher education institutions has a heavy environmental impact, due mainly to the consumption of electricity to run computers and to cool data centres. While work is already under way to investigate how more energy efficient ICT can be introduced, to date there has been much less focus on the potential environmental benefits to be accrued from reducing the demand âat sourceâ through better data and information management. JISC thus commissioned the University of Strathclyde to undertake a study to gather evidence that establishes the efficacy of using information management options as components of Green ICT strategies within UK Higher Education environments, and to highlight existing practices which have the potential for wider replication

To Zotero or Not to Zotero: Importing Faculty Scholarship in an Institutional Repository
Creating cost-effective and time efficient methods to complete tasks is necessary to maintain speedy and quality services expected by library patrons. Charles C. Sherrod Library at East Tennessee State University uses Zotero (a free, online reference management software) as a tool to expedite the process of entering faculty scholarship metadata into the institutional repository (IR), Digital Commons@ETSU (https://dc.etsu.edu). Additionally, Sherrod Library integrated Zotero with SHERPA/RoMEO (a database of publishersâ policies) to automate the process of determining which full-text materials can be included in the IR. Sherrod Library evaluated the usefulness of Zotero by examining the records entered into the software within a year. Complete and incomplete records were calculated in terms of disciplines and document types. Based on the results of the study, Sherrod Library now primarily uses Zotero for journal articles, books, and book contributions by STEM faculty. The disciplines of education and arts/humanities and the document types of newsletters/magazine articles and conference proceedings had too many incomplete records to justify using Zotero. This poster will visually represent the workflow of using Zotero through a chart and the results of the study through graphs. The workflow chart may be beneficial to an audience trying to automate their data entry. The results of the study may be of interest to anyone who uses or recommends reference management software in their position
CHORUS Deliverable 3.4: Vision Document
The goal of the CHORUS Vision Document is to create a high level vision on audio-visual search engines in order to give guidance to the future R&D work in this area and to highlight trends and challenges in this domain. The vision of CHORUS is strongly connected to the CHORUS Roadmap Document (D2.3). Impliance: A Next Generation Information Management Appliance
ably successful in building a large market and adapting to the changes of the
last three decades, its impact on the broader market of information management
is surprisingly limited. If we were to design an information management system
from scratch, based upon today's requirements and hardware capabilities, would
it look anything like today's database systems?" In this paper, we introduce
Impliance, a next-generation information management system consisting of
hardware and software components integrated to form an easy-to-administer
appliance that can store, retrieve, and analyze all types of structured,
semi-structured, and unstructured information. We first summarize the trends
that will shape information management for the foreseeable future. Those trends
imply three major requirements for Impliance: (1) to be able to store, manage,
and uniformly query all data, not just structured records; (2) to be able to
scale out as the volume of this data grows; and (3) to be simple and robust in
operation. We then describe four key ideas that are uniquely combined in
Impliance to address these requirements, namely the ideas of: (a) integrating
software and off-the-shelf hardware into a generic information appliance; (b)
automatically discovering, organizing, and managing all data - unstructured as
well as structured - in a uniform way; (c) achieving scale-out by exploiting
simple, massive parallel processing, and (d) virtualizing compute and storage
resources to unify, simplify, and streamline the management of Impliance.

Highly focused document retrieval in aerospace engineering : user interaction design and evaluation
Purpose â This paper seeks to describe the preliminary studies (on both users and data), the design and evaluation of the K-Search system for searching legacy documents in aerospace engineering. Real-world reports of jet engine maintenance challenge the current indexing practice, while real usersâ tasks require retrieving the information in the proper context. K-Search is currently in use in Rolls-Royce plc and has evolved to include other tools for knowledge capture and management.
Design/methodology/approach â Semantic Web techniques have been used to automatically extract information from the reports while maintaining the original context, allowing a more focused retrieval than with more traditional techniques. The paper combines semantic search with classical information retrieval to increase search effectiveness. An innovative user interface has been designed to take advantage of this hybrid search technique. The interface is designed to allow a flexible and
personal approach to searching legacy data.
Findings â The user evaluation showed that the system is effective and well received by users. It also shows that different people look at the same data in different ways and make different use of the same system depending on their individual needs, influenced by their job profile and personal attitude.
Research limitations/implications â This study focuses on a specific case of an enterprise working in aerospace engineering. Although the findings are likely to be shared with other engineering domains (e.g. mechanical, electronic), the study does not expand the evaluation to different settings.
Originality/value â The study shows how real context of use can provide new and unexpected challenges to researchers and how effective solutions can then be adopted and used in organizations.</p
Durable Digital Objects Rather Than Digital Preservation
Long-term digital preservation is not the best available objective. Instead, what information producers and consumers almost surely want is a universe of durable digital objectsâdocuments and programs that will be as accessible and useful a century from now as they are today.
Given the will, we could implement and deploy a practical and pleasing durability infrastructure within two years. Tools for daily work can embed packaging for durability without much burdening their users. Moving responsibility for durability from archival employees to information producers would also avoid burdening repositories with keeping up with Internet scale. An engineering prescription is available.
Research librariesâ and archivesâ slow advance towards practical preservation of digital content is remarkable to outsiders. Why does their progress seem stalled? Ineffective collaboration across disciplinary boundaries has surely been a major impediment. We speculate about cultural reasons for this situation and warn about possible marginalization of research librarianship as a profession.
