The use of THz frequencies, particularly W and G band allows reaching higher resolution and deeper penetration in emerging applications like imaging, sensing, etc. The development of those new applications lays on reliable technologies, background of expertise and know-how. The CDS2008-00068 TERASENSE CONSOLIDER project has given the opportunity to extent upwards in frequency the previous background of the microwaves research group partners. This article summarizes the developments of the TERASENSE work package “THz Device Technology Laboratory”.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación through the CONSOLIDER-INGENIO 2010 program reference CSD2008-00068 TERASENSE

Modal Analysis of Millimetre-wave and Terahertz Imaging Systems

This thesis presents the theory and applications of electromagnetic field calculation using orthogonal Gaussian beam modes within the context of far-infrared imaging systems. Laguerre and Hermite-Gaussian modes have been frequently reported in the analysis of paraxial millimetre-wave propagation in astronomical optical systems. Here the method of Gaussian beam mode analysis (GBMA) is extended to fields of optical research that have until recently been associated with wavelengths in the visible band. Using recently derived expressions for the non-paraxial diffraction of Hermite-Gaussian modes, the author demonstrates the modal calculation of far-field intensity distributions with less angular restriction on the accuracy of the method compared to the conventional paraxial description of orthogonal Gaussian modes. This method shows excellent agreement with predictions from more rigourous fullwave numerical methods such as the finite-difference time-domain algorithm, which is also described as a software tool in the modelling of horn and lens antennas. The properties of diffraction limited Bessel beams is described using the Laguerre-Gaussian expansion of conical lenses, and experimental measurements of a conical lens is presented to explore the validity of the use of these optical elements as horn coupled devices in millimetre wave imaging systems. A study of diffractive Fresnel lenses has been undertaken with a comparison of experimentally measured fields with those predicted by the modal techniques. The effects of such lenses on ultrashort paraxial pulses are also investigated using a novel numerical description of few-cycle fields as a superposition of pulsed Laguerre- Gaussian modes. The application of digital holography in the far-infra red band has the prospect of diffraction limited imaging systems without creating distortions and aberrations which is a common problem in conventional techniques using lenses and mirrors. The author presents results from a simple proof-of-concept system which exhibits the potential of this technique for application in, for example, mm-wave security imaging

New Type of sub-THz Oscillator and Amplifier Systems Based on Helical-Type Gyro-TWTs

This work presents the development and systematic investigation of a new sub-THz source for the generation of trains of coherent high-power ultra-short pulses at 263 GHz via passive mode-locking of two coupled helical gyrotron traveling wave tubes (helical gyro-TWT). The frequency of 263 GHz is an established figure for continuous wave (CW) DNP-NMR application and, therefore, the investigated source will allow the development of novel spectroscopy methods such as time-domain DNP-NMR for which powerful sub-THz pulses with highest coherency are required. For the first time, it is shown that the operation of the passive mode-locked helical gyro-TWTs in the hard excitation regime is of particular importance to reach the optimal coherency of the generated pulses. To enable the operation in the hard excitation regime, a new extended passive mode-locked oscillator is proposed. The extended passive mode-locked oscillator will furthermore enable the generation of specific pulse sequences in addition to the generation of pulses with constant repetition frequency. This could be of particular interest for some time-domain DNP-NMR methods where well-defined pulse sequences are required

A Mortar Element Method for the Analysis of Electromagnetic Passive Devices

    Get PDF
The thesis consists of two blocks. The first and main block concerns the application of multi-domain spectral methods to the analysis of electromagnetic guiding structures. A general scattering formulation for vector differential problems is developed. The boundary-value problems are discretized using basis functions synthesized according to the mortar-element method. An analysis technique of the scattering generated by skew-incident plane waves on 2-D dielectric periodic structures based on this idea is proposed; the boundary-value problem describing these devices is given by the system of two coupled Helmholtz equations, therefore it exhibits a vector nature. Then, a technique aimed at analyzing axisymmetric structures using the same concept has been developed; in this case, the boundary-value problem arises from the transversalization of Maxwell’s equations written in cylindrical coordinates with respect to the angular coordinate. Half of the second block concerns the design of a low-frequency Vivaldi antenna in the framework of the Sardinia Array Demonstrator project. This antenna has been realized and preliminarily characterized with a prototypical measurement system developed by CNR-IEIIT. The second half of this block is focused on the development of a boundary-integral equation method aimed at analyzing dielectric lens antennas. A preliminary version of this code has been implemented and compared with commercial simulators. This activity has been performed in the THz Sensing Group of TU-Delft, Delft, Netherlands
