Rewriting Flash Memories by Message Passing
This paper constructs WOM codes that combine rewriting and error correction
for mitigating the reliability and the endurance problems in flash memory. We
consider a rewriting model that is of practical interest to flash applications
where only the second write uses WOM codes. Our WOM code construction is based
on binary erasure quantization with LDGM codes, where the rewriting uses
message passing and has potential to share the efficient hardware
implementations with LDPC codes in practice. We show that the coding scheme
achieves the capacity of the rewriting model. Extensive simulations show that
the rewriting performance of our scheme compares favorably with that of polar
WOM code in the rate region where high rewriting success probability is
desired. We further augment our coding schemes with error correction
capability. By drawing a connection to the conjugate code pairs studied in the
context of quantum error correction, we develop a general framework for
constructing error-correction WOM codes. Under this framework, we give an
explicit construction of WOM codes whose codewords are contained in BCH codes.Comment: Submitted to ISIT 201
An Adaptive Entanglement Distillation Scheme Using Quantum Low Density Parity Check Codes
Quantum low density parity check (QLDPC) codes are useful primitives for
quantum information processing because they can be encoded and decoded
efficiently. Besides, the error correcting capability of a few QLDPC codes
exceeds the quantum Gilbert-Varshamov bound. Here, we report a numerical
performance analysis of an adaptive entanglement distillation scheme using
QLDPC codes. In particular, we find that the expected yield of our adaptive
distillation scheme to combat depolarization errors exceed that of Leung and
Shor whenever the error probability is less than about 0.07 or greater than
about 0.28. This finding illustrates the effectiveness of using QLDPC codes in
entanglement distillation.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
An Opportunistic Error Correction Layer for OFDM Systems
In this paper, we propose a novel cross layer scheme to lower power\ud
consumption of ADCs in OFDM systems, which is based on resolution\ud
adaptive ADCs and Fountain codes. The key part in the new proposed\ud
system is that the dynamic range of ADCs can be reduced by\ud
discarding the packets which are transmitted over 'bad' sub\ud
carriers. Correspondingly, the power consumption in ADCs can be\ud
reduced. Also, the new system does not process all the packets but\ud
only processes surviving packets. This new error correction layer\ud
does not require perfect channel knowledge, so it can be used in a\ud
realistic system where the channel is estimated. With this new\ud
approach, more than 70% of the energy consumption in the ADC can be\ud
saved compared with the conventional IEEE 802.11a WLAN system under\ud
the same channel conditions and throughput. The ADC in a receiver\ud
can consume up to 50% of the total baseband energy. Moreover, to\ud
reduce the overhead of Fountain codes, we apply message passing and\ud
Gaussian elimination in the decoder. In this way, the overhead is\ud
3% for a small block size (i.e. 500 packets). Using both methods\ud
results in an efficient system with low delay
Binary Message Passing Decoding of Product-like Codes
We propose a novel binary message passing decoding algorithm for product-like
codes based on bounded distance decoding (BDD) of the component codes. The
algorithm, dubbed iterative BDD with scaled reliability (iBDD-SR), exploits the
channel reliabilities and is therefore soft in nature. However, the messages
exchanged by the component decoders are binary (hard) messages, which
significantly reduces the decoder data flow. The exchanged binary messages are
obtained by combining the channel reliability with the BDD decoder output
reliabilities, properly conveyed by a scaling factor applied to the BDD
decisions. We perform a density evolution analysis for generalized low-density
parity-check (GLDPC) code ensembles and spatially coupled GLDPC code ensembles,
from which the scaling factors of the iBDD-SR for product and staircase codes,
respectively, can be obtained. For the white additive Gaussian noise channel,
we show performance gains up to dB and dB for product and
staircase codes compared to conventional iterative BDD (iBDD) with the same
decoder data flow. Furthermore, we show that iBDD-SR approaches the performance
of ideal iBDD that prevents miscorrections.Comment: Accepted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Communication
Variations of the McEliece Cryptosystem
Two variations of the McEliece cryptosystem are presented. The first one is
based on a relaxation of the column permutation in the classical McEliece
scrambling process. This is done in such a way that the Hamming weight of the
error, added in the encryption process, can be controlled so that efficient
decryption remains possible. The second variation is based on the use of
spatially coupled moderate-density parity-check codes as secret codes. These
codes are known for their excellent error-correction performance and allow for
a relatively low key size in the cryptosystem. For both variants the security
with respect to known attacks is discussed
