    Towards a collocation writing assistant for learners of Spanish

    This paper describes the process followed in creating a tool aimed at helping learners produce collocations in Spanish. First we present the Diccionario de colocaciones del español (DiCE), an online collocation dictionary, which represents the first stage of this process. The following section focuses on the potential user of a collocation learning tool: we examine the usability problems DiCE presents in this respect, and explore the actual learner needs through a learner corpus study of collocation errors. Next, we review how collocation production problems of English language learners can be solved using a variety of electronic tools devised for that language. Finally, taking all the above into account, we present a new tool aimed at assisting learners of Spanish in writing texts, with particular attention being paid to the use of collocations in this language

    Use and Evaluation of Controlled Languages in Industrial Environments and Feasibility Study for the Implementation of Machine Translation

    El presente trabajo de investigación se enmarca en los estudios de doctorado en traducción y la sociedad del conocimiento de la Universidad de Valencia y, en concreto, en la línea de investigación en tecnologías de la traducción, terminología y localización. En este sentido, esta disertación surge por la necesidad de establecer una metodología de investigación y ofrecer resultados empíricos sobre el desarrollo, implementación y evaluación de lenguajes controlados en la documentación técnica y su efecto tanto en los textos originales como en las traducciones de estos documentos. Así pues, el objetivo ha sido desarrollar una metodología para evaluar el impacto de los lenguajes controlados en la producción de documentación técnica dentro de contextos industriales y, más en concreto, en la elaboración de documentación técnica para el vehículo. El impacto se ha concretado en la mejora de la traducibilidad automática, un concepto que hemos discutido ampliamente en el capítulo 4, así como de la calidad de los textos meta.This research is part of the doctoral studies program "La traducción y la sociedad del conocimiento" at the University of Valencia. In particular the area of ​​research is translation technology, terminology and localisation. In this sense, this dissertation arises from the need to establish a research methodology and to provide empirical results on the development, implementation and evaluation of controlled languages ​​in the technical documentation and its effect on both original texts and the translations of these documents. Thus, the aim has been to develop a methodology to assess the impact of controlled languages ​​in the production of technical documentation in industrial contexts, and more specifically in the technical documentation for the vehicle. The impact has resulted in improved automatic translatability, a concept we have discussed at length in Chapter 4, as well as in the quality of the target texts

    DIACRITIC-AWARE YORÙBÁ SPELL CHECKER

    Spell checking and correction is still in infancy for Yorùbá language, and existing tools cannot be applied directly to address the problem because Yorùbá language requires extensive use of diacritics for marking phonemes and tone. We addressed this problem by collecting data from on-line sources and from optical character recognition of hard copy of books. The features relevant to spell checking and correction in this language that marks tones (and underdot) were identified through the review of existing spell checking solutions, analysis of the data collected and consultation with relevant Yorùbá Linguistics textbooks. A conceptual model was formulated as a parallel combination of a unigram language model and a language diacritic model to form a dictionary sub-model that is used by Error Detection and Candidate Generation modules. The candidate generation module was implemented as an inverse Levensthein edit-distance algorithm. The system was evaluated using Detection Accuracy (calculated from Precision and Recall) and Suggestion Accuracy (SA) as metrics.Our experimental setups compared the performance of the component subsystems when used alone with the their combination into a unified model. The detection accuracies for each of the models were 93.23%, 94.10% and 95.01% respectively while their suggestion accuracies were 26.94%, 72.10% and 65.89% respectively. In relation to the size of training corpus, the unified model was able to achieve a increase of 1.83% in detection accuracy and 5.27% in suggestion accuracy for 70% increase in size of corpus. The results indicated that each of the sub-models in the dictionary played different roles while the increase in training data does not give a linear proportional increase in performance of the spell checker.     A text reassembling approach to natural language generation

    Recent years have seen a number of proposals for performing Natural Language Generation (NLG) based in large part on statistical techniques. Despite having many attractive features, we argue that these existing approaches nonetheless have some important drawbacks, sometimes because the approach in question is not fully statistical (i.e., relies on a certain amount of handcrafting), sometimes because the approach in question lacks transparency. Focussing on some of the key NLG tasks (namely Content Selection, Lexical Choice, and Linguistic Realisation), we propose a novel approach, called the Text Reassembling approach to NLG (TRG), which approaches the ideal of a purely statistical approach very closely, and which is at the same time highly transparent. We evaluate the TRG approach and discuss how TRG may be extended to deal with other NLG tasks, such as Document Structuring, and Aggregation. We discuss the strengths and limitations of TRG, concluding that the method may hold particular promise for domain experts who want to build an NLG system despite having little expertise in linguistics and NLG
