    Stratification relieves constraints from steric hindrance in the generation of compact acto-myosin asters at the membrane cortex

    Recent in-vivo studies have revealed that several membrane proteins are driven to form nanoclusters by active contractile flows arising from F-actin and myosin at the cortex. The mechanism of clustering was shown to be arising from the dynamic patterning of transient contractile platforms (asters) generated by actin and myosin. Myosin-II, which assemble as minifilaments consisting of tens of myosin heads, are rather bulky structures and hence a concern could be that steric considerations might obstruct the emergence of nanoclustering. Here, using coarse-grained, agent-based simulations that respect the size of constituents, we find that in the presence of steric hindrance, the patterns exhibited by actomyosin in two dimensions, do not resemble the steady state patterns observed in our in-vitro reconstitution of actomyosin on a supported bilayer. We then perform simulations in a thin rectangular slab, allowing the separation of a layer of actin filaments from those of myosin-II minifilaments. This recapitulates the observed features of in-vitro patterning. Using super resolution microscopy, we find direct evidence for stratification in our in-vitro system. Our study suggests the possibility that molecular stratification may be an important organising feature of the cortical cytoskeleton in-vivo

    Array-based iterative measurements of SmKS travel times and their constraints on outermost core structure

    Vigorous convection in Earth's outer core led to the suggestion that it is chemically homogeneous. However, there is increasing seismic evidence for structural complexities close to the outer core's upper and lower boundaries. Both body waves and normal mode data have been used to estimate a P wave velocity, V_p, at the top of the outer core (the E’ layer), which is lower than that in the Preliminary Reference Earth Model. However, these low V_p models do not agree on the form of this velocity anomaly. One reason for this is the difficulty in retrieving and measuring SmKS arrival times. To address this issue, we propose a novel approach using data from seismic arrays to iteratively measure SmKS-SKKS-differential travel times. This approach extracts individual SmKS signal from mixed waveforms of the SmKS series, allowing us to reliably measure differential travel times. We successfully use this method to measure SmKS time delays from earthquakes in the Fiji‐Tonga and Vanuatu subduction zones. SmKS time delays are measured by waveform cross correlation between SmKS and SKKS, and the cross‐correlation coefficient allows us to access measurement quality. We also apply this iterative scheme to synthetic SmKS seismograms to investigate the 3‐D mantle structure's effects. The mantle structure corrections are not negligible for our data, and neglecting them could bias the V_p estimation of uppermost outer core. After mantle structure corrections, we can still see substantial time delays of S3KS, S4KS, and S5KS, supporting a low V_p at the top of Earth's outer core

    The structural transformation of embeddedness

    The concept of embeddedness plays a central role in the segment of economic sociology and social theory which is inspired by the works of Karl Polanyi. But to the extent that embeddedness is understood in a substantialist manner, implying the existence of a unitary lifeworld, the desire for embeddedness is an impossible aspiration under modern conditions. Throughout the modern era it is however possible to observe the emergence of complex societal stabilization mechanisms, which serve as substitutes to traditional forms of embeddedness. The emergence of function specific cultures, in the form of, for example, legal, political and scientific cultures, establishing a ‘second nature’ in the Hegelian sense, is one example of this. Other examples are (neo-)corporatist institutions which fulfilled a central stabilising role in classical modernity and the kind of network based governance arrangements which fulfil a similar position in today’s radicalised modernity

    Procyon-A and Eta-Bootis: Observational Frequencies Analyzed by the Local-Wave Formalism

    In the present analysis of Procyon-A and Eta-Bootis, we use the local-wave formalism which, despite its lack of precision inherent to any semi-analytical method, uses directly the model profile without any modification when calculating the acoustic mode eigenfrequencies. These two solar-like stars present steep variations toward the center due to the convective core stratification, and toward the surface due to the very thin convective zone. Based on different boundary conditions, the frequencies obtained with this formalism are different from that of the classical numerical calculation. We point out that (1) the frequencies calculated with the local-wave formalism seem to agree better with observational ones. All the frequencies detected with a good confident level including those classified as 'noise' find an identification, (2) some frequencies can be clearly identified here as indications of the core limit.Comment: SOHO 18 / GONG 2006 / HELAS I Meetin

    A Survey on Handover Management in Mobility Architectures

    This work presents a comprehensive and structured taxonomy of available techniques for managing the handover process in mobility architectures. Representative works from the existing literature have been divided into appropriate categories, based on their ability to support horizontal handovers, vertical handovers and multihoming. We describe approaches designed to work on the current Internet (i.e. IPv4-based networks), as well as those that have been devised for the "future" Internet (e.g. IPv6-based networks and extensions). Quantitative measures and qualitative indicators are also presented and used to evaluate and compare the examined approaches. This critical review provides some valuable guidelines and suggestions for designing and developing mobility architectures, including some practical expedients (e.g. those required in the current Internet environment), aimed to cope with the presence of NAT/firewalls and to provide support to legacy systems and several communication protocols working at the application layer
