Distribution Network Planning and Operation With Autonomous Agents
With the restructured power system, different system operators and private investors are responsible for operating and maintaining the electricity networks. Moreover, with incentives for a clean environment and reducing the reliance on fossil fuel generation, future distribution networks adopt a considerable penetration of renewable energy sources. However, the uncertainty of renewable energy sources poses operational challenges in distribution networks. This thesis addresses the planning and operation of the distribution network with autonomous agents under uncertainty. First, a decentralized energy management system for unbalanced networked microgrids is developed. The energy management schemes in microgrids enhance the utilization of renewable energy resources and improve the reliability and resilience measures in distribution networks. While microgrids operate autonomously, the coordination among microgrid and distribution network operators contributes to the improvement in the economics and reliability of serving the demand. Therefore, a decentralized energy management framework for the networked microgrids is proposed. Furthermore, the unbalanced operation of the distribution network and microgrids, as well as the uncertainty in the operating modes of the microgrids, renewable energy resources, and demand, are addressed. The second research work presents a stochastic expansion planning framework to determine the installation time, location, and capacity of battery energy storage systems in the distribution network with considerable penetration of photovoltaic generation and data centers. The presented framework aims to minimize the capital cost of the battery energy storage and the operation cost of the distribution network while ensuring the security of energy supply for the data centers that serve end-users in the data network as well as the reliability requirements of the distribution network. The third research work proposes a coordinated expansion planning of natural gas-fired distributed generation in the power distribution and natural gas networks considering demand response. The problem is formulated as a distributionally robust optimization problem in which the uncertainties in the photovoltaic power generation, electricity load, demand bids, and natural gas demand are considered. The Wasserstein distance metric is employed to quantify the distance between the probability distribution functions. The last research work proposes a decentralized operation of the distribution network and hydrogen refueling stations equipped with hydrogen storage, electrolyzers, and fuel cells to serve hydrogen and electric vehicles. The uncertainties in the electricity demands, PV generation, hydrogen supply, and hydrogen demands are captured, and the problem is formulated as a Wasserstein distance-based distributionally robust optimization problem. The proposed framework coordinates the dispatch of the distributed generation in the distribution network with the hydrogen storage, electrolyzer, and fuel cell dispatch considering the worst-case probability distribution of the uncertain parameters. The proposed frameworks limit the information shared among these autonomous operators using Benders decomposition
Distributed MPC for coordinated energy efficiency utilization in microgrid systems
To improve the renewable energy utilization of distributed microgrid systems, this paper presents an optimal distributed model predictive control strategy to coordinate energy management among microgrid systems. In particular, through information exchange among systems, each microgrid in the network, which includes renewable generation, storage systems, and some controllable loads, can maintain its own systemwide supply and demand balance. With our mechanism, the closed-loop stability of the distributed microgrid systems can be guaranteed. In addition, we provide evaluation criteria of renewable energy utilization to validate our proposed method. Simulations show that the supply demand balance in each microgrid is achieved while, at the same time, the system operation cost is reduced, which demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed policy.Accepted manuscrip
A New Efficient Stochastic Energy Management Technique for Interconnected AC Microgrids
Cooperating interconnected microgrids with the Distribution System Operation
(DSO) can lead to an improvement in terms of operation and reliability. This
paper investigates the optimal operation and scheduling of interconnected
microgrids highly penetrated by renewable energy resources (DERs). Moreover, an
efficient stochastic framework based on the Unscented Transform (UT) method is
proposed to model uncertainties associated with the hourly market price, hourly
load demand and DERs output power. Prior to the energy management, a newly
developed linearization technique is employed to linearize nodal equations
extracted from the AC power flow. The proposed stochastic problem is formulated
as a single-objective optimization problem minimizing the interconnected AC MGs
cost function. In order to validate the proposed technique, a modified IEEE 69
bus network is studied as the test case

Robust optimization for energy transactions in multi-microgrids under uncertainty
Independent operation of single microgrids (MGs) faces problems such as low self-consumption of local renewable energy, high operation cost and frequent power exchange with the grid. Interconnecting multiple MGs as a multi-microgrid (MMG) is an effective way to improve operational and economic performance. However, ensuring the optimal collaborative operation of a MMG is a challenging problem, especially under disturbances of intermittent renewable energy. In this paper, the economic and collaborative operation of MMGs is formulated as a unit commitment problem to describe the discrete characteristics of energy transaction combinations among MGs. A two-stage adaptive robust optimization based collaborative operation approach for a residential MMG is constructed to derive the scheduling scheme which minimizes the MMG operating cost under the worst realization of uncertain PV output. Transformed by its KKT optimality conditions, the reformulated model is efficiently solved by a column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) method. Case studies verify the effectiveness of the proposed model and evaluate the benefits of energy transactions in MMGs. The results show that the developed MMG operation approach is able to minimize the daily MMG operating cost while mitigating the disturbances of uncertainty in renewable energy sources. Compared to the non-interactive model, the proposed model can not only reduce the MMG operating cost but also mitigate the frequent energy interaction between the MMG and the grid
Smart Microgrids: Overview and Outlook
The idea of changing our energy system from a hierarchical design into a set
of nearly independent microgrids becomes feasible with the availability of
small renewable energy generators. The smart microgrid concept comes with
several challenges in research and engineering targeting load balancing,
pricing, consumer integration and home automation. In this paper we first
provide an overview on these challenges and present approaches that target the
problems identified. While there exist promising algorithms for the particular
field, we see a missing integration which specifically targets smart
microgrids. Therefore, we propose an architecture that integrates the presented
approaches and defines interfaces between the identified components such as
generators, storage, smart and \dq{dumb} devices.Comment: presented at the GI Informatik 2012, Braunschweig Germany, Smart Grid

Optimal Economic Schedule for a Network of Microgrids With Hybrid Energy Storage System Using Distributed Model Predictive Control
Artículo Open Access en el sitio web el editor. Pago por publicar en abierto. In this paper, an optimal procedure for the economic schedule of a network of interconnected microgrids with hybrid energy storage system is carried out through a control algorithm based on distributed model predictive control (DMPC). The algorithm is specifically designed according to the criterion of improving the cost function of each microgrid acting as a single system through the network mode operation. The algorithm allows maximum economical benefit of the microgrids, minimizing the degradation causes of each storage system, and fulfilling the different system constraints. In order to capture both continuous/discrete dynamics and switching between different operating conditions, the plant is modeled with the framework of mixed logic dynamic. The DMPC problem is solved with the use of mixed integer linear programming using a piecewise formulation, in order to linearize a mixed integer quadratic programming problem.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitivadad DPI2016-78338-RComisión Europea 0076-AGERAR-6-
Coordinated Control of Energy Storage in Networked Microgrids under Unpredicted Load Demands
In this paper a nonlinear control design for power balancing in networked
microgrids using energy storage devices is presented. Each microgrid is
considered to be interfaced to the distribution feeder though a solid-state
transformer (SST). The internal duty cycle based controllers of each SST
ensures stable regulation of power commands during normal operation. But
problem arises when a sudden change in load or generation occurs in any
microgrid in a completely unpredicted way in between the time instants at which
the SSTs receive their power setpoints. In such a case, the energy storage unit
in that microgrid must produce or absorb the deficit power. The challenge lies
in designing a suitable regulator for this purpose owing to the nonlinearity of
the battery model and its coupling with the nonlinear SST dynamics. We design
an input-output linearization based controller, and show that it guarantees
closed-loop stability via a cascade connection with the SST model. The design
is also extended to the case when multiple SSTs must coordinate their
individual storage controllers to assist a given SST whose storage capacity is
insufficient to serve the unpredicted load. The design is verified using the
IEEE 34-bus distribution system with nine SST-driven microgrids.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
