Energy Efficiency of Network Cooperation for Cellular Uplink Transmissions
There is a growing interest in energy efficient or so-called "green" wireless
communication to reduce the energy consumption in cellular networks. Since
today's wireless terminals are typically equipped with multiple network access
interfaces such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks, this paper
investigates user terminals cooperating with each other in transmitting their
data packets to a base station (BS) by exploiting the multiple network access
interfaces, referred to as inter-network cooperation, to improve the energy
efficiency in cellular uplink transmission. Given target outage probability and
data rate requirements, we develop a closed-form expression of energy
efficiency in Bits-per-Joule for the inter-network cooperation by taking into
account the path loss, fading, and thermal noise effects. Numerical results
show that when the cooperating users move towards to each other, the proposed
inter-network cooperation significantly improves the energy efficiency as
compared with the traditional non-cooperation and intra-network cooperation.
This implies that given a certain amount of bits to be transmitted, the
inter-network cooperation requires less energy than the traditional
non-cooperation and intra-network cooperation, showing the energy saving
benefit of inter-network cooperation.Comment: in Proceedings of the 2013 IEEE International Conference on

Relaying Simultaneous Multicast Messages
The problem of multicasting multiple messages with the help of a relay, which
may also have an independent message of its own to multicast, is considered. As
a first step to address this general model, referred to as the compound
multiple access channel with a relay (cMACr), the capacity region of the
multiple access channel with a "cognitive" relay is characterized, including
the cases of partial and rate-limited cognition. Achievable rate regions for
the cMACr model are then presented based on decode-and-forward (DF) and
compress-and-forward (CF) relaying strategies. Moreover, an outer bound is
derived for the special case in which each transmitter has a direct link to one
of the receivers while the connection to the other receiver is enabled only
through the relay terminal. Numerical results for the Gaussian channel are also
provided.Comment: This paper was presented at the IEEE Information Theory Workshop,

Asymptotic Analysis of Amplify and Forward Relaying in a Parallel MIMO Relay Network
This paper considers the setup of a parallel MIMO relay network in which
relays, each equipped with antennas, assist the transmitter and the
receiver, each equipped with antennas, in the half-duplex mode, under the
assumption that . This setup has been studied in the literature like
in \cite{nabar}, \cite{nabar2}, and \cite{qr}. In this paper, a simple scheme,
the so-called Incremental Cooperative Beamforming, is introduced and shown to
achieve the capacity of the network in the asymptotic case of
with a gap no more than . This result is shown to hold,
as long as the power of the relays scales as .
Finally, the asymptotic SNR behavior is studied and it is proved that the
proposed scheme achieves the full multiplexing gain, regardless of the number
of relays
Optimal Coding Functions for Pairwise Message Sharing on Finite-Field Multi-Way Relay Channels
This paper considers the finite-field multi-way relay channel with pairwise
message sharing, where multiple users exchange messages through a single relay
and where the users may share parts of their source messages (meaning that some
message parts are known/common to more than one user). In this paper, we design
an optimal functional-decode-forward coding scheme that takes the shared
messages into account. More specifically, we design an optimal function for the
relay to decode (from the users on the uplink) and forward (back to the users
on the downlink). We then show that this proposed function-decode-forward
coding scheme can achieve the capacity region of the finite-field multi-way
relay channel with pairwise message sharing. This paper generalizes our
previous result for the case of three users to any number of users.Comment: Author's final version (accepted for presentation at the 2014 IEEE

Joint Source and Relay Precoding Designs for MIMO Two-Way Relaying Based on MSE Criterion
Properly designed precoders can significantly improve the spectral efficiency
of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. In this paper, we
investigate joint source and relay precoding design based on the
mean-square-error (MSE) criterion in MIMO two-way relay systems, where two
multi-antenna source nodes exchange information via a multi-antenna
amplify-and-forward relay node. This problem is non-convex and its optimal
solution remains unsolved. Aiming to find an efficient way to solve the
problem, we first decouple the primal problem into three tractable
sub-problems, and then propose an iterative precoding design algorithm based on
alternating optimization. The solution to each sub-problem is optimal and
unique, thus the convergence of the iterative algorithm is guaranteed.
Secondly, we propose a structured precoding design to lower the computational
complexity. The proposed precoding structure is able to parallelize the
channels in the multiple access (MAC) phase and broadcast (BC) phase. It thus
reduces the precoding design to a simple power allocation problem. Lastly, for
the special case where only a single data stream is transmitted from each
source node, we present a source-antenna-selection (SAS) based precoding design
algorithm. This algorithm selects only one antenna for transmission from each
source and thus requires lower signalling overhead. Comprehensive simulation is
conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of all the proposed precoding designs.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figure
