This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/This paper proposes a cooperative strategy for the flexible integration of stand-alone AC microgrids using an intermediate multiterminal DC link based on voltage source converters. The strategy manages cooperative power exchange between microgrids through a knowledge-based fuzzy inference system that relies on the current operating conditions of the microgrids. By determining the amount of power to be exchanged between microgrids to improve global reliability, the cooperative strategy achieves an overall reduction in load loss and an increase in the use of available renewable energy. Additionally, the multiterminal DC link provides complete isolation between microgrids, allowing for independent AC bus voltage regulation and management. The effectiveness and expandability of the proposed cooperative energy exchange strategy for enhancing the overall operation of multiple integrated microgrids have been fully verified by simulation and experimental validation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Load frequency controllers considering renewable energy integration in power system

Abstract: Load frequency control or automatic generation control is one of the main operations that take place daily in a modern power system. The objectives of load frequency control are to maintain power balance between interconnected areas and to control the power flow in the tie-lines. Electric power cannot be stored in large quantity that is why its production must be equal to the consumption in each time. This equation constitutes the key for a good management of any power system and introduces the need of more controllers when taking into account the integration of renewable energy sources into the traditional power system. There are many controllers presented in the literature and this work reviews the traditional load frequency controllers and those, which combined the traditional controller and artificial intelligence algorithms for controlling the load frequency

Gradual depletion of fossil fuel resources, poor energy efficiency of conventional power plants, and environmental pollution have led to a new grid architecture known as smart microgrid. The smart microgrid concept provides a promising solution that enables high penetration of distributed generation from renewable energy sources without requiring to redesign the distribution system, which results in stable operation during faults and disturbances. However, distributed generators/loads and interaction between all nodes within a microgrid will substantially increase the complexity of the power system operation, control, and communications. Many innovative techniques and technologies have been proposed to address the complexity and challenges of microgrids including power quality, power flow balancing, real‐time power management, voltage and frequency control, load sharing during islanding, protection, stability, reliability, efficiency, and economical operation. All key issues of the microgrids, different solutions, and available methods and technologies to address such issues are reviewed in this chapter. Pros and cons of each method are discussed. Furthermore, an extensive comprehensive review for researchers and scholars working on microgrid applications is provided in this chapter to help them identify the areas that need improvements and innovative solutions for increasing the efficiency of modern power distribution grid

Control Strategies of DC Microgrids Cluster:A Comprehensive Review

    Get PDF
Multiple microgrids (MGs) close to each other can be interconnected to construct a cluster to enhance reliability and flexibility. This paper presents a comprehensive and comparative review of recent studies on DC MG clusters’ control strategies. Different schemes regarding the two significant control aspects of networked DC MGs, namely DC-link voltage control and power flow control between MGs, are investigated. A discussion about the architecture configuration of DC MG clusters is also provided. All advantages and limitations of various control strategies of recent studies are discussed in this paper. Furthermore, this paper discusses three types of consensus protocol with different time boundaries, including linear, finite, and fixed. Based on the main findings from the reviewed studies, future research recommendations are proposed

Review on Multi-Objective Control Strategies for Distributed Generation on Inverter-Based Microgrids

[EN] Microgrids have emerged as a solution to address new challenges in power systems with the integration of distributed energy resources (DER). Inverter-based microgrids (IBMG) need to implement proper control systems to avoid stability and reliability issues. Thus, several researchers have introduced multi-objective control strategies for distributed generation on IBMG. This paper presents a review of the different approaches that have been proposed by several authors of multi-objective control. This work describes the main features of the inverter as a key component of microgrids. Details related to accomplishing efficient generation from a control systems' view have been observed. This study addresses the potential of multi-objective control to overcome conflicting objectives with balanced results. Finally, this paper shows future trends in control objectives and discussion of the different multi-objective approaches.Gonzales-Zurita, Ó.; Clairand, J.; Peñalvo-LĂłpez, E.; EscrivĂĄ-EscrivĂĄ, G.
